antibiotics for the second time.

Hi All, Just to update you on recent visits to my doc.

Had sore throat as you know from previous messages, that turned to chest infection, had Amoxicillin for 7 days , didnt touch me, went back saw doc had another 5 days same antibiotic, still no change, finally went back again at daughters insistance & was given a peak flow thingy to blow into, & a Ventolin inhaler, though I havent got asthma.

First time I blew into the thingy, it registered 160, low I was told , has now improved to 300 .

anyone any idea what the flow number should be?

Still not feeling right , still hoping it will clear up soon.

My daughter has just gone to her sisters till she flies back to N/Z on Tuesday , we had a great time even though I wasnt 100%

P.M.R. though behaved on the 12 .5.dosage.

I miss her already, but finding little notes from her all over the house , in my reading book, wardrobe door, under my pillow, etc. Makes me cry when I find them, then happy because she loves her old Mum .

Hope you are all having a pain free day.

Cheers Amycakes.

Some antibiotics can cause damage to the little hairs inside the ear that are responsible for carrying the air vibrations due to sound. So can aspirin and other NSAIDs. My husband went deaf overnight (about 70% loss I think) because of treatment with cisplatin, an anti-cancer drug, which almost always does it but his attitude was \"deaf or dead? no choice really\". Trouble is that sort of deafness can't be helped a lot with hearing aids. He also has tinnitus - which I had in the pre-steroid phase of my PMR. That I found really irritating. I suspect it had started after either a phase of lots of painkillers or a course of antibiotics but has disappeared with the pred so I wonder if it was a combined effect of poor blood flow and the other drug? It may of course have been coincidence.

    Hi All,

Saw doc today, he says the deafness probably caused by the infection, & could take 6 weeks to recover.

No syringing offered or drops, so will have to wait it out.I guess.

Husband feeling & looking better today when I visited him & with a little bit of luck may be home for the weekend.

Has to have a heart scan & one on his leg which is very swollen, so hopefully it will done tomorrow & he can come home.

    Cheers Amycakes.

Hopefully now that you're feeling so much better and will have \"stopped blowing your nose so hard\", your ear will settle down even faster than 6 weeks - should be in time to hear those carol singers anyway! Glad to hear hubby is on the mend and may be home at the weekend so no more journeys to and fro - fingers crossed for both of you.

So sorry to find you have been in the mire, Amycakes; you certainly have a lot on your plate.

Do hope you manage to get hubby home in one piece so that you can rest up for a while - it does sound as if you both need it!

Lets us know how it goes over the weekend.

    Hi All,

Hubby not coming home this weekend after all, he has an infection in his gallbladder ,plus gallstones, & they say his liver is not producing whatever it should, he is having many low sugars too, 1.7 last night ,a bit scary, they dose him up with hot chocolate ,bananas whatever.

When he was home he had his diabetes under control with insulin, seems to have gone haywire since the infections which I believe is usual.

Had scans today so hopefully will have results soon.

I have taken the last of my high dosage of steroids today, so down to 12.5 tomrrow, fingers crossed it will go well.

Home is too quiet at the mo, missing him & the dog keeps going to the bottom of the stairs ,looking up as if to say \"come on then where are you \"He did look better today though , so trying to stay positive.Cheers Amycakes.

Although that must be so disappointing hubby not coming home this weekend after getting your hopes up, he is in the best place until he is really better.

I'm not so sure about your going right back down to 12.5 again from 30. I know it was a short sharp burst of extra steroid to help whilst you had the chest infection but as you have a lot of stress going on at the moment what with hubby in hospital and you having to go back and fore each day, if it was me I think I would go down gradually for a few days at a time, perhaps via 20 at first, then if you still feel ok to 17.5, to 15 then 12.5. It gives you a chance to 'test the water' so to speak rather than doing one massive drop which if it didn't work would entail you going back up really high again. Perhaps others will be along shortly with their thoughts on this.

By the way, do you eat 'live' yoghurt each day? Although it's a highly beneficial food to eat normally, it's also an excellent way of getting the natural bacteria back in the stomach after being bombarded by antibiotics.

It's a promising sign that hubby is looking well and I do hope he is at least managing to stay cheerful and will be home with you and your little 4-legged friend soon, Amycakes.

The up and straight down technique to deal with a blip of anything is fairly standard - I think it is a case of seeing how you fare. If you were OK on the previous dose apart from the chest infection you should be alright - the high dose was to reduce the swelling in the airways. Sometimes the doctors do it as a taper over a bit longer but possibly feel since you are on steroids anyway that has the same effect.

But don't hesitate to ask someone if you aren't happy about how you feel - after all, you'll be in the hospital with a doctor around

    hope it all keeps improving

Thanks for your input , I have gone back on the 12.5 as from yesterday & am feeling ok, so will continue for the mo, unless I really feel awful again.

As you say it was a booster to combat the infection , so it should be ok now.

    Thanks again.

I was on 20 for 7 days because of a severe reaction to AA and told to go straight back, after that, to the 8 I had been on previously. I did query it and was told it was ok and so it proved. Hope that's some comfort.

Do hope they get your husband sorted soon. It is such a worry when diabetics get their regime upset. Friend of mine had a really bad tummy bug and just couldn't keep anything down so her sugars went horrendously low. I must say that diabetics do get wonderful care from their special nurses and she was sorted over the 'phone but still a nasty episode.

Best wishes to you both, Betty.

    Hi All,

Just to let you know my husband is home again!

Such good news when I visited him yesterday.

He is much better , but must take it easy & rest.

Dog went banans when she saw him.

12.5 seems to be working , having backache but think that will always be a problem for the mo.

Hope you are all having a good day.

    Thanks again for your support.

Great - really pleased to hear that as it will be so much easier for you and he can get a night's sleep too!

Have they decided what was wrong yet?

All the best to both of you - make sure you both take it easy for a bit and make sure your husband doesn't get too enthusiastic too soon!
