Antihistamines

I've been given promethazine antihistamine for sedation for sleep. Has any one else put on a lot of weight on this or any one know if antihistamine can cause weight gain. I was on mitrazapine n came off it because I piled on the weight too go on to venlafaxine but I can't sleep it's just a vicious circle 😥😫

Can't say for promethazine per say...

However, when I have a bout of insomnia, I have an open script for Zopiclone, which works wonders for me. You may want to ask your physician about it.

It can be habit forming though and you need to take them only if needed.

Yeah they gave me that but would only give me it for a short time in case I got addicted. But I can't sleep without the antihistamine so surely I could get addicted too them too x

mirtazapene is particularly bad for weight gain, but then others can cause it as well. Until your new anti depressant is fully working, and you are sleeping okay, then sleep and mental wellbeing are your priority. Once ven is working fully, you should be able to come off the anti histamine with few problems. i dont think weight gain is a priority for you at the moment, its something to address, when you are better. i can understand your worries. i put a lot of weight on, while on my previous ad seroxat. i lost loads of weight earlier this year, when i got into a complete state, when it stopped working. i couldnt eat anything. now recovering on ven, and my appetite is back as strong as ever, its a constant issue. however, ive decided theres no way im putting the weight back on. completely cut out all crap. no slip ups, all or nothing. a month or two of that, and it can break your cravings for unhealthy food. also, dont keep much food in your house, certainly no crap. its amazing how the cravings stop, when you have to go to the shop to get something you dont really need. this works really well. just keep the essentials in your home. hope some of this helps.

Nigel the venlafaxine is working I'm not as ill as I was. It's just the sleeping I'm having problems with. They should of known my back ground that they took me off mitrazapine because of the weight gain put me on venlafaxine and I've been fine apart from the sleeping. I am so glad I'm better I don't want too sound ungrateful but I feel huge n uncomfortable 😟

anxiety and therefore sleep, are normally the last thing that gets better. on the ssri forums, general consensus was that it took 3 months for people to be anxiety free, although there were a few that said it took 6 months. ven seems to take longer. how long have you been on ven? its your anxiety levels that cause the insomnia. are you completely caffeine free? with me, the weight gain started when seroxat stopped working so well, over a few years. i didnt care about much, and excessive eating was enjoyable. to lose weight its going to need your own will and discipline.they will improve when ven is fully working. late last year i just decided id had enough of being over weight, and lost a stone. then i got depressed, and lost a lot more. when ven started working in july, thats when my food cravings started again. cravings come and go. if you keep unhealthy food in your home, when you have cravings, its there, and you can easily satisfy yourself. if its not easily available, the craving goes away, when something distracts you. with me, if i start eating unhealthy stuff at home, i dont stop until its all gone. try not keeping unhealthy food at home, after a few weeks, you sort of get used to it. its still a struggle for me now, you want to choosing and buying your food when you feel good and are more disciplined. if you ban yourself from unhealthy food and drinks, it forces you to find healthier options.

Nigel it's interesting your saying it's my anxiety levels that's stopping me sleeping. I wonder if I took a diazapam before bed I'd be ok. What do u think I have diazapam left over anyway x

ps, i said just keep the essentials in your home. actually its a bit extreme, but i dont keep any food in my home. i shop daily for food i need for the day. its extreme, but it works. if i store food at home, i will eat it, so i make sure there isnt any.

Hi Karen, it's been 2 weeks for me off Mirt. I started Sertraline alongside VEN . My sleep s all over the shop. I take either 0.25 xanax or 25 Sleepease from boots. I usually wake up around 2am and then I am awake for an hour and fall asleep eventully until 5. I get 5 hours sleep atm.... I have also tinnitus on Ven that hasn't gone yet so sleeping is a nightmare because of that.... hell on EARTH... xx

I was on 30 then went down to 15 for one week and then 15 every other day then stopped. I had to taper quickly because I was due to start Sertraline. No side effects apart from insomnia but it could also be a side effect of Sert.

How long were you on 30 ?

I am tapering very slowely of 45 but i think i may be being over cautious. I feel so awful on mirt i just want it gone.

I have been on Mirt since end of May... different doses. I was also on 45 at one point, then 30. Mirt helped me a lot 6 years ago but not this time.... and it made me even worse. It helped with sleep and made me eat so much crap! Are you still on Ven? If you are on another antidepressant whilst tapering Mirt, you should be fine.

How is your depression? What dose of VEN are you on? I have been on VEN for 11 weeks but still not myself. It's my 6th week on 225.

I went on it more for anxiety but had depression too. I have been on it nearly 2 years at 150mg. I think it helps but it has taken time to work. Still have very bad days.

Hi Karen, I hit 12 week mark on Ven and unfortunately didn't feel massive improvements in my mood. It did help with anxiety, however I always felt like in a fog and really bad, constant tinnitus was so distressing that my doc has decided to wean me off slowly of Venlafaxine. I have been on Sertraline 50 for a month now and down to 75mg Ven. However, despite being still pretty low I have started sleeping on my own and I haven't been taking any sleep aids for 1.5 week. How are you? Has your sleep returned again? x

That's a shame the can didn't work for you hopefully this different one will work. It's so hard isint having too go through this. The fogginest feeling your talking about and moods not lifted happened with me on mitrazapine. So I came off that too try venlafaxine. I'm doing ok I broke down at my work on Monday was in a bit of a state feeling very very low n that I was worthless. But too tell you the truth I think it was because I was out in Saturday night at a friends house had about 6 southern comforts was home measures so probs was bigger measures then pubs. And I think that massively affected me mixing alcohol with my tablets. I hardly drink and I enjoy going out with friends and having a good time but any time I drink alcohol it just affects me for days after. So it looks like I will just need too give up alcohol it's not like I'm wanting too drink every weekend but would be nice to have a couple sometimes. But hey at the end of the day my mental health more important. There letting me take zopiclone every third night too get a sleep I only take them so I can get too work. I didn't take any last 2 nights because ive been off sleeps very very disturbed but I think their is small improvements as times getting on its been about 3 months now it's been like this but as I say small improvements even if I could just get 6 straight hours that would be brilliant. Keep me posted how your doing I wish you the best of luck with this new tablet xxx
