I've been on sertraline for months after a breakdown just starting feeling good, then my Mother went into hospital for the 15th time she has dementia. I then suffered a day of anxiety. Every time my Mum is mentioned I get anxiety attAcks...... Anyone had a similar experience.....how can I cope with helping my Mum without it affecting me

I really feel for you. I too experience this parent related anxiety. My mother has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease and is pretty much bedridden. She was the capable one as my dad is so useless around the house bless him. I have to think of everything for them and shop etc. when I am at my bad anxiety stage which is very frequently, I find even the thought of phoning them makes me ill. The guilt kicks in then too. My anxiety disorder is worse when I have to shop or go out. But I need to obviously. I am going to a short nhs funded course in January . Once a week for four weeks. I'm hoping I'll learn to cope better with my problem and control it. If you haven't already maybe speak to your doctor about what's available. I feel the sertraline is making things worse so I will go the other route and see what happens. So hard caring for an aged parent. People don't always understand. Hope you cope ok. X

After reading some of the above comments I will add that the side effects from sertraline have been pretty bad for me hence why I've decided to try something else but I know of two other ladies that consider it a wonder drug and they are now leading full anxiety free lives. So we are all different and it's worth trying.  Always have a chat with the doctor first because the dosage might need adjustment.

      Hey Cloe,

I'm in a similar situation. At home for Christmas and not used to being alone so dreading going to bed. I have the same chest issues you have but I'm trying my best to just relax. I've been in a state of almost constant anxiety now for about 2 weeks and I started taking 50mg of Sertraline per day on Monday. One thing that is a little helpful to me is a breathing exercise my friend(who is a doctor) told me about. Breath in slowly through your nose with your eyes closed. Then pause for a few seconds(however long feels right), then breath out through your mouth with your eyes open,  repeat this until it slows your heart rate. Hope this helps.
