Anxiety from Antibiotics?

Hi everyone!

So I'm currently being treated for Lyme with a ten day round of Doxycycline Hyclate. I didn't have anxiety about taking it because it's something I've taken before, however. I'm about five days into it and all the sudden feeling an extreme surge in my anxiety. Like to the point where it's difficult for me to go to class and get up in the morning. I've also been having nightmares since about two days after starting it.

Has anyone else experienced this while on Doxy or another antibiotic?

Lyme is a disease that's transmitted through tick bites. If it's not caught it could potentially cause problems further down the road. Generally it's starts with what looks like a bullseye rash. I had a huge one on my arm last week. You could also have flu symptoms, but I haven't gotten any of those.

It's not something generally to be worried about for you probably. I live in a part of the US where it's most prevalent.

Hi! Yes this is very common, although GPs will do their best to convince you there is no correlation - experience shows otherwise. Antibiotics affect gut flora and the wider immune response. This results in changes in absorption of nutrients, chemistry, pH, and hormone levels.

An anxious mind and organism perceives shifting dynamics and overreacts as if something is wrong with the body causing additional tension which increases apprehension. Further, illness has similar effect on anxiety.

Certain antibiotics are more likely to cause a response. Doxycycline is one of them. Another notable one is Flagyl (metronidazole) - also notoriously heavy on anxiety sufferers. However, best course of treatment for Lyme needs to be followed as risks for Lyme far outweigh the transient discomfort of adhering to treatment.

SO...go with the flow, and try not to take the sensations to seriously as they are self-limiting and transient. Remind yourself that there is a massacre going on inside your body with Doxy chemical warfare on dreadful Lyme infiltrators smile Once you are done, rebalance gut flora with good live cultures (kefir and sauerkraut are some options), fresh raw foods for bacterial recolonization, some dried fruits. Fresh lemonade and lots of deep greens for immune system boost.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Thank-you so much for your in depth explaination. I mean, I've had extreme bouts of anxiety but I thought it was really ironic that it started again with the treatment, at a time when I thought I was doing okay anxiety-wise. I even called my mom, who can only take Doxy because of allergies, and she was all like "that can't cause anxiety" and started telling me I needed anxiety meds again. But googling it, I find other with similar experiences. And also your response was really helpful in understanding why I may be experiencing the anxiety. Thank-you. I will continue the course of the treatment. I mean, I'm halfway there anyways!

Right. Experience has also shown that people do not get the connection. Which is unfortunate. Those with anxiety are sensitised. Moon phase changes...we are off the grid. Atmospheric pressure drops...we feel like we are suffocating. Flu or cold brewing but symptoms not yet present - anxiety spikes. Not enough sleep for a couple of days or poor nutrition for a few days ....spike. I have found a lot of peace of mind when I embraced the sensitivity. Over time I learned when and why my body responds and the fear and apprehension has gone. I now know what is happening and anxiety does not spiral ... in fact most times it does not even truly begin before the mind is reminded of prior experiences. So it is a process.

Listen to your body and calm your mind by registering when things happen and why. You are compiling a reference base and will feel better over time. Nothing to worry about.

Having said that: Since you already know what anxiety escalations feel like, you know that if and when it starts persisting beyond a week or two or new symptoms start morphing or you get signs that you are cracking under extreme tension this is when a follow up is needed with your doctor. So do not suffer if there is any doubts. Just saying this so you do not ignore any signs that your anxiety is getting out of hand.

I had a similar reaction to an acid inhibitor drug, but my sensitivity to it was in fact a pointer to just how tense I had been. I ended up needing a briefish low dose rebalancing and re-evaluation by my psychiatrist. Just something to keep in mind. Just be sure you keep on top of your condition as well.

      All the best.

Thank-you so much! I appreciate that there are so many people in this forum that have similar experiences. It makes you not feel so crazy and alone.

I have panic responses to all of those slight changes too. And also am pretty sensitive to medications. My last huge anxiety spiral happened when I was on a thyroid med. It was more extreme though and lasted months.

I do see a therapist every week or so. I had to just start at a new one because my last one changed jobs, and I feel like that probably contributes to my subconscious anxiousness as well. But I do know when to get help and when it becomes too much to handle myself.

You seem to be so in control and in tune to your body and that's super admirable. I aspire to do that too. It's a work in progress.

Have you been taking probiotics during your antibiotic treatments? I know some people state that if your gut biomes are not healthy, that stress, anxiety, etc. can occur. It's not a reaction as you've had before, unless there is a medical interaction with another med. I would talk to your doctor about it either way.
