anxiety - muscle weakness and aches legs and arms - LONG

Hi All,

I have recently moved overseas and for 3 months I have been doing not much, but I have been smoking a pack of smokes a day and drinking 4 coffees a day while I try to find a job. I must admit, I have been feeling the pressure of moving to another country, stressing to find a job, and I haven’t been active or proactive which I feel might be affecting my health. One day I woke up and I felt these aches in my arms and legs. I shrugged it off as just long day walking around but then it stayed with me for the last 2 months. I got really worried because these aches started off as like fatigued legs and arms, weakness, and now they feel weakness and achy. I feel it in both limbs equally. They feel achy when I walk for a long time or stand in a spot for a while. Besides that, i have been diagnosed with anxiety before and had a few panic attacks about 2 years ago .

I have gone to a Neurosurgeon (3 for different opinions) and all have came back with negative results in regards to my MRI for Full Spine scan and Brain scan. So I’ve ruled that out. I’ve also done a full blood test results including anaemia and cortisol and that came back good. i also did an ECG and visited to Neurologist for a EMG and came back fine. I even went to a psychiatrist and she believes its anxiety and prescribed me xanax 0.5mg (I don’t even feel those tablets do anything). Now I’m feeling lost and will be seeing a vascular specialist to check my arteries in my legs and arms. I’ve read online that anxiety can definitely cause muscle aches and pains. The aches also go to my feet. When I clench my feet I feel it achy and sore. I just don’t believe anxiety can do this to someone and make them feel aches and pains for 2 months long! Mentally I feel ok, not stressed atm, but these symptoms won’t go away. Though, I keep thinking about this all day for the past 2 months.

Has anyone felt what I’m going through?

Can Anxiety cause these symptoms to stay with an individual for this long?

Please someone help! This is affecting my lifestyle. sad

Thanks

There are several things that can cause these symptoms. Firstly, it would be beneficial to drop the caffeine and cut back on the nicotine. Make sure to eat a well balanced diet. Get plenty of rest and try not to stress.

It sounds like a metabolic issue. I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist. Have you lost or gained weight? Is your heart rate faster than usual? I would have a complete thyroid panel done, check for more than TSH. Have your TSH, FT4, FT3, ANTI THYROGLOBIN ABS, TPO, TSI ABS. HAVE AN ANA done to check your immune system for autoimmune issues. Sometime ( often) the results will be normal even if you have issues until it gets bad enough. It's worth a try.

    All the best.

Any updates on this? I've been having these problems for a few months now. I thought it was CFS(Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) due to a decayed tooth. However, I got that tooth removed earlier this week and felt good, but now the problem of muscle aches and weakness have returned. I am thinking maybe it is hyperthyroidism.

Hi there I know this is an old post but just thought id drop a line to recommend you are checked for vitamin d deficiency.  A simple blood test can rule this out but it sounds exactly like it to me. aches pains weakness and anxiety can all be caused by vitamin d deficiency. Good luck!
