I only had one done but plenty who post have had both. They will have good advice.

They would not do it if it was impossible to cope but I ask a lot of questions at preop, ward level and the physios. Might be tempted to ask for extra physio when home.

You our will need help at home at first I should think

Hi Lyn,,I would think it is the same routine as with one crutch, because it will be just one step at a time, but it could be twice as painful,I think you are very brave having both done, but it could be better getting rid of all the pain etc. all at once, think positive, all the Hip Hoppers will be behind you,I wish I had found this support before I went for my OP,I think it's wonderful, wish you all the very bestLove Michael.

What a lovely message Michael. Thank you so much. Yes finding this forum has been a life saver for me. Everyone is so supportive, inspirational and very generous to share their experiences for the benefits of new hip hoppers. It's been great. Thanks again Michael.

      Love

Hi Lyn, yes it will be the strongest leg first, then the weaker one, using the Crutch to steady yourself, on the way up, and on the way down, its the opposite, Crutch first, weaker leg, then stronger leg, and hang on to the banister tightly, and it is one step at a time for about a month, depending how your strength ratio to mass is, it will take some practice, and if you get a visit from the physio people ask the person to watch you and see if they can advise for the safest way, it helps to pick their brains, making sure that you have the idea clearly in your mind, as accidental falls really happen all too quickly, best of luck I have had both done but separately and it was easier for me.  Keep in touch Ian.

I had both done 12 days ago. The physios had me on the stairs 2 days post op. They teach you how to go up and down the stairs with two crutches in one hand and using the bannister replicating what you would have to do at home. It helps to have good upper body strength for easing yourself off the bed and out of chairs etc.

They discharged me on day 4 as the physios and occupational therapist were happy that I could cope. Keep up with the painkiller regime and watch out for pressure sores on heels - i was advised to lie on back for 6/52, place a pillow under your calves to elevate heels. Alternate pillow and no pillow to shift the back pressure a little. Find I cant sleep more than 3 hours at a time at present. Cant wait to have staples out on Thursday as lying on them is a nuisance. Hang on in there , be positive as you will feel the benefits immediately but be patient with the recovery as bone and muscle take time to heal ! xx
