Any one else fall on their foot after having a bunionectomy 5 days ago?

hi i had a bunionectomy on my right foot last friday and it is wednesday night now ..about 5 days later. the first day after surgery was brutal. ive followed the drs instructions to elevate and ice consistently. i want to add that i was given a surgical boot to keep on and an appt to see my surgeon exactly 1 week post op.

over the past several days ive felt my foot healing as far as pain goes, the pain wednesday morning had subsided and i didnt feel the need to use my pain meds any more...however about 2 hours ago i lost balance on my crutches and i completely stepped on my right foot (with boot) with all my weight about 2 times rather quickly before my bf caught me... luckily he was near by.

my foot now feels numb and i cant really feel much around where the sutures are i can still feel my other toes though.

im worried that i might have moved the bones around because i know the dr put a screw in to keep it in place and im paranoid that it will heal weird now..

anyone else have a fall 5 days after their bunionectomy was there any effect from it?

ive emailed my dr but its basically 3 am here. wont hear back til tomorrow either way i have an appt in about 32 hrs to see him

About 2 weeks after my surgery I lost balance and I smacked my bare foot down on the bathroom floor while getting out of the shower. I still had pins in my toes from hammer toe correction and pins from bunion. I didn't have any problems then. but now I'm 2.5 months post op and I'm experiencing a lot of pain on the top of my foot. not sure if it's related. I go back to Dr. next week. Please keep us updated and I will do the same.

after your incident did you get xrays done?

My dr had me go in immediately after I told him about my incident. The same thing happened with me when I lost balance I smacked my food down on the floor to regain balance it was a two step smack because I did it once then kind jumped off of it since I had my crutches and then still didn’t have balance and went back on it and that’s when my bf caught me. It was pretty quick but still left me feeling traumatized. I’m much more slower in my movements now and am limiting myself a lot more.

My dr had xrays done to make sure nothing moved out of place however I do have a screw that is in my bone where they’ve realigned it so it can mend back he said it looks like nothing moved. So happy I didn’t do any damage except for a bit of pain but I can manage.

no x-ray's for me. Right after it happened it hurt but not so much I was real concerned with it, but now at my last appointment my Dr said he's very concerned since it's the top of my foot (center). Unfortunately the x-ray machine was down so I must wait until another day for that. (I know.... what kind of a foot specialist hasn't got a backup plan if machine breaks?) He actually is a very good Dr in the most respected and qualified facility in town so I'm at a loss on this.

Other than the top of my foot now hurting I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. speedy recovery. minimal scars. I never had to take any pain meds after the first day after surgery. Hopefully my other foot goes great, its scheduled for November 7th.

sounds great! i want to have my left foot done too but im not sure if ill have enough strength to have my current -bad-

foot do all the work my left is currently doing. i originally plan on waiting a year for it to heal up then doing my other foot.

I too had originally planned on waiting longer between surgeries but because of unfortunate circumstances with my husband's health I need to get back into the work force asap at full strength. Also I may be losing my insurance soon. I'm hoping I'm not moving forward to fast.

I followed Dr orders exactly as far as no weight bearing and keeping it elevated. Also I started wearing a compression sock as soon as I could get one on without discomfort. I started with a larger baseball player type sock and every week got tighter fitting ones. I still do wear one everyday. I also have a wonderful husband who actually remembered the 20+ years I took care of him (house wife, a damn good one lol! ) and he waited on me hand and foot, escorted me on every bathroom visit (finally I told him "some things really do need to stay private in a relationship" so he started waiting outside the door. He had our roommate cook every dinner and he took care of the rest. I know not everyone is as fortunate as I am to have this kind of help. But I think it is why my foot has healed so quickly and without pain or complications. I am a little overweight and my Dr was worried about how I would handle getting around but I've done great. my next foot, my left is my weaker leg.... was my weaker leg so I am a little concerned. It's amazing how quickly you can lose muscle strength by inactivity which is what has happened to my right leg now. I'm doing lots of walking trying to prepare. it's starting to hit me now that surgery is November 7th!

      Hi Jennifer,

Looks like we will be second surgery buddies! I had my right food done on 8/27 (Lapidus Fusion, Modified McBride and Akin Osteotomy) and will be getting my left foot done on 11/7 (same procedures). It will be 10 weeks after my first surgery.

I'm nervous because my right leg looks like a twig due to inactivity and I can't walk yet. I start physical therapy tomorrow and hope to get my right leg strong enough to be able to support crutches and a scooter when my left foot is non-weight bearing. No complications with my first surgery, but I was going into it super fit and flexible. Now I will have a partially working foot and weak leg. Like you, I wanted to get the surgeries done asap and it was better for my insurance to do them both within the plan year.

I will be thinking of you and I hope you check in so we can support each other when we're healing.

Sounds like a great plan. Someone to chat with a little about what's going on would be great.

I saw my surgeon today, going in for another check in a week just to make sure that everything is good to go for surgery on the 7th.

I wish you luck in getting yourself ready in a quick like fashion for your 2nd surgery. I remember thinking I was prepared for my first and how wrong I was. LoL

      Hi Jennifer,

I had my first PT session today and went from 0% weight bearing on a scooter to walking on one crutch with 60% weight on the foot! That's progress! PT said I should be crutch free by Saturday! It was mostly getting over the mental fear of falling and lack of confidence. Once I realized my foot could take it, it became much easier. I'm feeling much better about my surgery on 11/7 now. I has my pre op yesterday and am ready to go.

I'll start sending you private messages to check in. I'm not looking forward to the initial two weeks of elevation and no mobility, but the sooner we start, the sooner it'll be over!

      @Kenora44

doctor had me go in this morning ASAP to get x-rays done.

Luckily in my fall i didn't wind up moving or fracturing the bone that was realigned. he said it did shift a tiny tiny bit but that it was absolutely looking fine for healing. he mentioned to me that if something had moved or been fractured id have to go into surgery asap to fix it. i'm feeling extremely blessed today and just relief that the fall didn't cause any damage.

as far as pain goes, it doesn't hurt if i just keep it elevated, it is more sensitive than the day before i fell so does feel like i rewound the healing process a bit, but im going to continue icing it for 30 minutes on an off.

my dr did say that i am not as swollen as someone would be for being 6 days post op (even with that fall wow!)

I'm using my partner's email because this server would not let me register. (I never received an email when I requested a password change). Yes, I fell hard on my foot. I had Lapidus/Akin surgery on September 21, was in a splint for 1 week, then a cast for 3 weeks. I just got the walking boot on September 21. Two days later, I got out of bed and before putting on the boot, got on my knee scooter. It suddenly tipped over and my right foot went crashing to the floor--very hard! I was shocked . I thought all that work healing, elevating, icing, for nothing! That day, my foot really hurt; it had actually almost stopped hurting before the fall. I have to travel out of town to my hospital, so I decided to wait it out. Today it feels much better, but I still am terrified I jarred the plate, screws or both that are in my bones. However, I'm thinking that since the pain didn't get worse, and has even calmed down, maybe I'm OK. Still, it's a big worry. I'd love to have others to communicate with. By the way, this may not appear as using my partner's email, he just got notice that the email was invalid--I'm typing this on my computer, not his. But I tried over and over to register and was not allowed (I gave myself the name "brokenbones")

I had a bunionectomy on my left foot Tuesday.....it's now Sunday. i was using the scooter with no boot and list my balance and put all my weight on the surgery foot. It was instinctual. I'm terrified that i messed it up. i did have lots of pain , but immediately iced and elevated. I'm currently on the couch crying out of fear! I feel so stupid. I have my first post op appt Tuesday morning.

      Hi,

I fell off my scooter this morning and am in so much pain! I'm two weeks out from surgery but have very little wrapping on my foot. I am in pain but more worried I did damage. Were you OK when you went to the doctor?
