I Was wondering if anyone had experienced being ivovermedicated and what were your symptoms?

I've been going through hell the last month with extreme anxiety and tiredness feeling dizzy/lightheaded random pains in head and eyes, and now I've  had it confirmed I've been taking 25mcg to much, anyone experienced something similar I've felt like I've been going out of my mind x

Hi Sally, what kind of issues are you having? I've been over medicated also. How long have you been over medicated?

      Hi Jane!

I started taking levothyroxine in December and after two weeks I thought I'd lost my mind. My doctor(gynocologist) told me that the levothyroxine wouldn't cause any of my symptoms (severe anxiety, arms and legs shaking, hot and cold flushes and not being able to sleep). I tested positive for Hashimotos and my gyno had decided that a low dose of levothyroxine would help but also said when I was telling her my alarming symptoms that "hashimotos is funny that way" which I was too dumb to ask her what she meant. Long story short I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a mental breakdown and they said everything was normal and I needed to drink tea and meditate. Then a week later my primary doctor called to follow up on the ER visit and said that the ER labs showed my potassium and sodium low so I needed to come in and get bloodwork done to see if they returned to normal and that the Levo can cause some/all of my symptoms. I just started my 3rd week of being completely off of the levo and just got blood drawn this morning to see where all of my levels are. I definitely still have some of the symptoms but they aren't as bad as before. I was already having a rough year with stress and this just made it so much worse. I guess I just needed to reach out to people who have been there to get some sort of comfort.

I was overmedicated and the only thing I can tell you is that it takes time. Once your dosage is lowered you'll have to wait several weeks at least three to feel a difference. It is a difficult road but hang in there, things will get better. I had awful anxiety and even though I'm still dealing with it I feel better now. In the meantime, be kind to yourself, take things slowly, try to eat well, rest, meditate and speak to someone close to you of how you are feeling having a confident will help you very much.

im surprised nobody mentioned the types of medicines available can make a huge difference. I was over medicated for 3 years it was horrible, heart racing, plantations, sweating, joint pains, extreme weight loss, dizzy, patches of random hair loss etc. the doctors had no clue and thought I was crazy, they only tested the tsh for years which was within normal range, it was not until i started reading up that i found out that they should be checking t3 and t4, turns out my t4 was high, reduced my meds from 100 to 75. symptoms got better but came back after a few months, high t4 again after the pharmacy changed the generic brand for levothyroxine. after much research i asked to be switched to tirosint, its made in Switzerland and very good quality and consistent quality which is very important for thyroid medicine, it has no other additives but because its so pure ur body will require less dosage so they lowered me to 50mcg. and things were good for 6 months but i lost more weight and found my b12 levels were low so after working to correct that it seems my overmedicated symptoms came back so I need get tested again. we will see what happens.

Honestly when my doctor told me to start taking levothyroxine I just went with what she said believing she was the expert. So maybe people don't know about the different types of thyroid medications? I'm sorry for all of the troubles you've been having but it sounds like you know your body and the symptoms well and can get ahead of them:)

I am pretty sure I was overmedicated for the last 2 months and my doctor kept telling me that my symptoms couldn't be caused by the medicine so I literally thought I was losing my mind. Then finally one listened to me and said that they could be caused by the levo so I just started week 3 of no levo. The symptoms have decreased but I definitely don't feel myself still.

Hi just curious if anyone is still on this thread?

I was recently diagnosed with hashimotos antibodies and although my TSH and T3 and T4 were normal they put me on a low level of Levo. After the 1st couple days I felt jittery and had to stop drinking coffee then about 2 weeks later I started having trembling arms and legs and just crazy racing thoughts, couldn't sleep, racing heart and intense anxiety. I called my doctor (gyno who prescribed the levo)and they said there was no way the levo could cause those symptoms so I thought I was having a stress induced breakdown. I ended up on anti-anxiety meds and also in the ER about a month after that because I honestly thought I was losing my mind. Then my GP called for a follow up after the ER visit and said it is completely possible that the levo was causing some/all of my symptoms. So I quit taking the Levo and am just now at the end of my 3rd week. I'm just wondering how long it took people to get back to normal. I feel like I have good days and then really bad days and I'm not sure if it matters that my thyroid showed functioning normal when I started taking the thyroid meds? Any insight would be so appreciated!!

similar to you , put on 25 of levo and went from calm to anxiety through the roof in days , stopped it after 5 days which was 5 days ago and still dealing with all the symptoms it caused . high antibodies and borderline tsh was the reason for starting it

I was on the Levo for almost 2 months before any doctor told me it was possible that it could be causing my issues. I am almost 4 weeks out and still dealing with things. I have had the worst insomnia and I know that is probably making things worse. When they told me the medication couldn't be causing my symptoms I thought I was going insane and they put me on lexapro and buspirone to help with the anxiety which those have their own side effects. I've been so angry and frustrated with the whole situation.

its going to take time to get levo out your system due to the half life being 6/7 days , dont know what dose you were on for the 2 months . I am finding it hard too with anxiety ( reduced a lot ) heart flutters now rather than full on racing and palpatations , same as you with sleep , very tired during the day but not anything like when i was on the levo . I suffer with an anxiety disorder and never taken any meds and went the therapy route so im working my way through the anxiety the best i can , ive been 2 weeks no levo but expect another 4 weeks of this but hopefully it gets easier as it leaves my system .

I was only on 25mcg of the Levo for 2 months. I am on week 5 and I do notice a lot of the physical symptoms are gone. I finally am starting to sleep through the night for the most part (I might wake up but I can fall back asleep instead of staring at the ceiling). I am still dealing with anxiety but I know I had that going on a little bit before I started the Levo and that hopefully with me actually sleeping that will help some of that too. My previous anxiety may be part of the reason the doctor didn't think it was the Levo causing my symptoms, it is hard to get through the anxiety for me when there were so many people just saying it was stress/anxiety and then it has me questioning myself. I do have an appointment with an endocronologist at the end of March so hopefully I can build that relationship so this doesn't all seem so overwhelming.

3 weeks for me since I stopped taking them , feeling a lot better than i was whilst on them , still have achy legs but a lot of symptoms have eased or gone , my throat is finally feeling better that i can swallow . sleep has improved in that im not bing the majority of the night , im staying asleep for at least 4 hrs and can at least relax when i wake even if i dont fall back asleep , still feel phases of tiredness through the day . Im making lifestyle changes , diet changes and taking vitamins to up my levels to see if it all helps , i will not touch that medication again in a hurry !
