Anyone familiar with Dr. Dan Sperling who does FLA in Florida, and I think NJ and NY.

I'm interested in Focal Laser Ablation for my BPH. I've heard good things about Dr. K in Houston but very little about Dr. Sperling in Florida. I live much closer to Dr. Sperling's clinic so I'm asking if anyone is familiar with Dr. Dan Sperling of the Sperling Medical Group in Delray Beach Florida.

This summer when my BPH problem became critical resulting in severe bladder retention and treating urologists were recommending a TURP, a friend of mine suggest I call Dr. Sperling. My friend had received a FLA treatment for his BPH problem with Dr. Serlimg 8 months before and he was now "peeing like a race horse". I talked with Dr. Sperling's financial office and was informed they do not take third party insurance coverage or Medicare. They would provide billing codes for me to check if my third party carrier would reimburse me. They told me the procedure would cost $20,000 up front.
I subsequently had a 20 minute phone consultation with Dr. Sperling for which he did not charge. I never could get a definitive answer from him about the largest prostate he has done FLA for BPH, but not PC. In my subsequent conversations with noted urologists as I searched for what made sense for me, they told me that while the FDA has approved FLA for PC they have not for BPH. Hence why I suspect Sperling's office advises potential patients they do not take insurance because no carrier would cover it for BPH. Those noted urologists also told me that irrespective of the coverage issue, FLA would not work as well for me as it did for my friend because my friend's prostate was about 60 cc while mine was 170 cc.
I would be interested in hearing whether any men on here have had FLA for BPH on a prostate as large as mine and whether it was successful in resolving their BPH issues. Thank you

Interesting that your urologist would tell you that. The fact are quite obvious that it is actually the opposite fact. FLA works well on large median lobes and on larger prostates. Resume has problems with large prostate and median lobe issues as I have read on this site.
Mine was 125cc. I do also know of a 230cc on this site that had it done and was good on results. Kenneth is correct, you should call Dr. Karamanian and ask him. Better yet, get a 3T MRI of your prostate and send it to him and he will analyze the film and tell you what you have specifically. And, he will not charge you for that. He is in Houston if you are looking for his site on web. It explains most of it and the button is on there to upload your MRI from a cd.
Kenneth is correct. Do your home work and you will get the answers. Good Luck

DCRofGB My prostate was around 125 cc according to my ct scan. Dr K was confident he could help me. I did not do ?FLA nor any other procedure. I responded very well to drug therapy. I'm waiting and hope a very easy procedure becomes available. Hopefully something along the lines of intraprostatic injectable therapy. There are a few drugs that show some promise. Hopefully my symptoms won't worsen.

I had FLA with Dr. K just over 1 year ago. My experience was similar to many other men here. After removing the catheter, my urine flow gradually improved for about 3 months and stayed that way for the most part. I have noticed a gradual decrease in flow for the past 2 months, but it is still much better than it was before the procedure. I have been completely satisfied with FLA so far. I took myself off tamsulosin about 6 weeks post procedure and have not had to go back on. I did notice that the amount I ejaculate is about half of what it was before, I assume that is due to removal of part of the prostate. I have not seen any other comments about so maybe I am the only patient who experienced this.

Hey Richard
I am happy that you are doing well. I have had talks with Dr. K. Nice guy. And what you are saying is true. 70 % of your ejaculation comes from the seminal vesicles and the other 30 % comes from the prostate so if he got rid of some of your prostate you will have less. But at least you still have it.
Best of Luck....Ken
