Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram?

Posted , 526 users are following.

Hi there,

After much deliberation, talking to just about anyone I could find and generally scouring the internet for information, I have decided to go with the Docs advice and take Citalopram, starting today. And then I found this site....

Has anyone NOT had any side effects on this? It is making me feel very worried about taking it. Am I just going to have to sit tight and presume the worst? Are there people who take it and dont feel nauseous and tired or even worse to begin with?

I would really appreciate any comments.

Thanks

M

    Hey Anne

Bravo biggrin You made it, and slaughtered one of your big dragons!

Good on you for being distracted by your presentations, hopefully these will now go smoothly!

Well everyday is a holiday for me - having taken early retirement from the BBC over ten years ago to look after the girls! But we are enjoying the sunny break down here in Dorset. Back to school for the girls next week, and I have several meetings at my schools as well!

I feel slightly better today - it being 7 days since doubling the Pregab dose. Worried a bit about weight increase, but hopefully I'll get there.

Have a good night's sleep and a good day tomorrow.

I have been following this thread for a while and am encouraged by the success stories I have read about taking Cit.

So, I thought I'd share mine and maybe get some encouragement.

I started taking Cit about 8 days ago after a few weeks on Zoloft and having such bad side effects I could not take it anymore.

I was taking about 1/3 of 25mg tablet of Zoloft and couldn't take anymore.

I have tried different ADs in the past, but never lasted with them. I have bad anxiety and major depression. I am currently experiencing my 4th bought of major depression in 20 years. It started in January and I have been mainly off work for almost a month due to this, but really need to be back soon, as I need the money.

Anyway, since I am so sensitive to meds, I started the Cit at 5mg. This morning on my 8th dose, I tried to bump it up another 1mg or so. I have had some side effects this past week and mainly insomnia, shakiness, restlessness, and some digestive issues.

But, I have noticed the last few days I have felt better mood wise. It might not be all day, but generally lasts for part of the day with maybe a blip somewhere in between. Today was even better. Is this normal? Could I be already feeling the benefits of Cit this early? Would the direct transition from Zoloft maybe have kick started the Cit somehow?

It has given me hope that I can be my normal self someday. I hope it continues since my family and work have been suffering as a result of my depression/anxiety. Should I try bumping the dose up more since I have been taking so little and I need it to be effective as soon as possible.

      Hi Sunmicroman

I have been on CIT for 44 days now half of those i was on 10mg and got bumped upto 20mg. the first couple of days i took 10 mg i felt terrible, mood was so low, headaches and also felt sick then i had a couple of days were i felt great, you will find that your mood and side effects will change, some days you will feel great and some days you will find tough, i still get these but you wont feel the full effects of CIT until 8 weeks or after, and from peoples posts and advice iv had on this forum its a great feeling and personally i cant wait to get there.

i would advise you to stick on CIT as your body takes a while to adjust, this is a big step for you and you should be proud. This forum has been a godsend for me, hope it helps you smile

Hi Anne glad everything went well yesterday, not the nicest experience to go through, but you done well smile

I have been having a bad week this week, thought i was starting to feel the benefits of the CIT as last week was fab, never felt better, but this week seems to be the opposite, as my partner works away he is due to come back this weekend, i know i should be happy and will  be when i see him but i cant help but feel anxious, very low and sick, i know the CIT wont be helping at the moment but all i want to do is run, i find when this happens all i want to do is get as far away from the person asap. some kind words would help sad

      Thanks G xx

      Hi G

stick in there. I'm at a similar stage to you (day 42) and having similar experiences.  Been making progress but had a low day yesterday at a wedding. It carried on this morning when I was with my partner who I don't see very often. I feel I must be happy all the time when I'm with her but when I'm low I start to even doubt the relationship   It lifted and I'm relaxed with her now. Drives me to distraction !

Hang on there  remember you had a good week last week

      take care

Paul..i am on week 11 on 20mg (after 6 weeks on 10mg). Last 3 weeks i have felt like me again! But yesterday had a really bad day and like you, doubted how i felt about my partner last night when he hasnt done anything in the slightest wrong! I had feelings of this before I started Cit...Felt low at work too. I agree it drives you to distraction...

Hope you have a good day.

      Hi paul & Mo

Sorry last post didnt go as planned pressed enter before i could finish what i was saying haha. Phewwww so its not just me, apart of my anxiety comes from being in relationships i have something going on at the moment where i have to tell him how i'm feeling and everything iv done or i get a horrific guilt feeling, it sounds silly but cant control it and struggle to function at work because new things pop into my head, after all the stress i convince myself i dont want to be with him because i cant deal with all those feelings at the same time, but on the other hand when im in a good place i look forward to seeing him and those silly thoughts arnt half as  bad. Do you think CIT will help this problem?

I have felt for a while i must be the only person that feels like this or struggles with this problem, please tell me im wrong sad

Hi G46689...phewwww absolutely! Thanks for messaging.

My partner and i have had our ups and downs like anyone I guess...when i am in a good place I am same as you, look forward to seeing him, happy, carefree! When I am in a bad place I feel negative about our past, the future AND I question the relationship all the time! As said above, on week 11 (6wks on 10mg and then last 5 weeks on 20mg). Have started to feel great last few weeks with life and happy with my partner, but on a bit of a downer again generally with work, home, him. This is making me worry that i will go downhill again...

I really do understand how you feel. Will you keep in touch?

      Hi Mo

No problem thanks for your reply, i understand where you are coming from when i describe this to some people close to me they dont understand how my feelings can change from one day to another but i suppose they dont really understand anxiety very well. when i put my dose up i started my days from scratch so if you think about it you have 3 weeks left for your CIT to settle, so although you are feeling grand at the moment you might have a few days that wont be so good but dont worry about it this just shows the CIT is working and you always have support from everyone on this forum. A couple of weeks ago i had asked when you would feel the full effects of CIT, and from the responses i got, when it finally kicks in each day gets better and better. so fingers crossed.

Glad someone feels the same as me, yeah of course i am happy to keep in touch

      Hi G!

Thank you. I actually think I feel better today!!! How are you doing? This anxiety thing is a shock to me as I never experienced it before. Doc says it's hormones!

How long have u been on the cit?

I have to say that this forum has helped me so much and thanks again for your encouragement!

      Hi Mo

I am ok bit on edge today if im honest, but its friday last day of work and the other half comes home tomorrow and im looking forward to it which is a bonus haha. Anxiety is a horrible feeling iv lived with it for years and only got put on medication this year. i was on 10mg for a couple weeks then got bumped upto 20 mg im now on my 5th week so basically the same as you, im finding im having  more bad than good days but hopefully in the next couple of weeks this gets better, if not a little trip to the docs will help.

how long have you suffered from anxiety? i find that exercise helps me, also reading but i dont do that alot haha

      Hi G.

Anxiety is awful. Mine is due to dreaded hormones! Only suffered really on and off for last 6 months and put on cit at end of Jan this year so I'm actually longer than u... I'm definitely having a better day. Sorry ur not feeling too great but bellieve me things do improve. I just had a blip yesterday maybe??

I agree reed that exercise is good but I'm a full time mum so it's hard!

i hope tomor is good when ur partner is home :-)

      Hi g/mo

Good to follow your chat. My background re my partner is we've only been together only 12 months after my previous partner left me after 25 years. We get on brilliantly and she is my soulmate.

Its just when I'm low it's as if my depressed mind tries to reject the relationship even when nothing's changed ! I read sometimes a depressed

or anxious mind goes for what matters to you like your relationship wiwith your partner.

still up and down but ok

hope you are both having a good day

dont worry about missing your cit as it takes  36 hours to go out of your body and you will have had one by then, and it will catch back up

My weekend also fab!!! Feeling good today back at work too! Off to docs for my follow up as this is the 12th week for me!

Really glad you had a good weekend smile. I think missing the tablet will be ok, that means you were soooo relaxed you forgot to take it!!!!

      Thanks for messaging.

      Hi Paul.

That is very interesting what you say re partners..my partner and I broke up over two years ago and got back together 15 months ago. I think i worry it wont work because of the anxiety!

I had a good weekend, it is follow up with doc this afternoon. (6 weeks, 10mg and 6 weeks 20mg). I think my appointment will be a positive one!

Hope you are having a good day today?smile

Iv realised in my relationship I look for things that arnt there and end up making myself anxious over nothing! When you talk about it on this or to someone you realise how silly it sounds but in your head it's a big situation! I'm glad I mentioned this on this forum as I have spoke about it with people in the past and they don't understand, so just kept quiet!!  I have been on cit 6 weeks now and still having blips do you thing upping my dose to 30mg might help??

Hope yous have have a good day 😊
