Archilles tendon --- how to sleep after surgery?!

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi all, background: completely ruptured my archilles tendon about a week and a half ago and just diagnosed last fri. Had surgery last night and now have an air boot.

Told to stay non- weight bearing for 2 weeks, then stitches to come out, then 4 weeks with instep thing to be lowered slighted each week, followed by 4 weeks with flat foot still in the boot. So total of 10 weeks in the boot.

Firstly, anyone else going through a similar treatment?

Secondly, how on earth do you sleep in this boot? Have it high on a couple of pillows and am on meds, but still v painful. I know it's only day 1, but any advice for sleeping?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

Not had surgery as didn't have a complete tear. I am now 5 weeks down the line with converse five treatment and have been in a boot from day one. I had 4 heel lifts and now done to 3.

Bearing in mind I had not had surgery so you must be in more pain wearing the boot none the less it is still uncomfortable. I have slept with my leg raised and making sure my duvet is not on the boot(becomes too heavy). I slept on my back to begin with but as the weeks have gone by now managing to sleep on my sides, you just adapt to however you are comfortable.

Good luck, I am counting the days until I walk again, I am hoping I am half way through this ordeal.

Hi Karen - that's great that you are approx half way there! Good luck with the last few weeks in a boot.  Thx for the advice ... Am trying on my back with leg on pillow and duvet rolled back but it's still painful ... Think meds have worn off but i not did for another 5 hours :-(

I also have this pins and needles that you guys have been mentioning. Is there anything to be done for that?

Hope you both have a speedy recovery!

      Thanks

Hi there - called the hospital the other night after your note and they said it was probably still the general anaesthetic wearing off. It's gone off now, but will bear in mind if I get it again.

I'm surprised your not in a hard cast or something.  Keep that boot on tight for a 2/3 weeks.  Sleep when you can because it's not priority #1.  Got to protect that Achilles as its most important.

Thanks Danny! It's a hard air boot, a bit like a ski boot. I'm not to move it for 2 weeks.

How far along are you to recovery?

I'm also shocked your not in a cast for 2 weeks with your leg up especially after surgery. It seems hospitals around the country all gave different ideas on this particular fracture. Hope the sleeping is getting better, all of a sudden it will feel natural to sleep in as the weeks pass.

6+ months from surgery, it can be an agonizing journey. I slept with that damn boot on many nights and it does suck.  So many issues along the way.

How many issues? No surgery for me but still feels agonising as you say. Have slept with boot  at night since day one and longing for its departure. How long was it when you started walking with one crutch so desperate to walk again.

Hope so too! Showering is proving interesting too!

I'm actually in Australia at the moment, so could be slightly different treatment out here. Hope it won't impact the recovery.

I do have my leg up all day at the moment ... trying to stay in bed, which is so hard. Working from home ... with internet, we can be anywhere I guess.... so not really time to be bored, it's just frustrating not being able to move.

Sorry to hear about all the issues. Are you walking now?

Dizziness, massive swelling, skin adhesion to tendon sheath, knee issues, swelling behind the knee, tendonitis, and many more problems beyond those.

i think I was walking in cam boot in 3/4 weeks,  I lost track of some of the dates as goals were met.  It really helped that I bought a wheel chair off of craigslist to get through the early days.

Sounds painful, such joy to look forward to!

      Hope all is well now.

Oh yes shower is an occasion. I have now got it down to a fine art on my left leg, never knew it was so strong. Mt upper body arm muscles are coming along great with the aid of my crutches, think I will give up my gym membership!

Had a decent shower yesterday ... sat on a stool! Result! Even moved from the bed to the downstairs sofa.

I was having a look online at something called an iWalk - it's kind of a crutch that attaches to your knee and you can walk on without the traditional crutches ... so you can carry things too. Has anyone bought one of these? Not sure how many weeks I would need it, as I guess it's for the time that you are non-weight-bearing. What do you all think?

Well done, it will get easier. I have looked at the iwalker and was considering this but decided against it as I wanted to get using my foot quicker and thought if I rely on this too much I would get lazy and not use mt injured leg. Loons like the USA like this a lot! I looked at it in the early days when I was fed up and useless but now getting around easier and started putting more weight in my right leg, also now not going up and down stairs on my bum!
