Hello,

My life with Globus continues....

It's been two years + now since I was diagnosed with Globus the only trouble is that my mind just cant accept this and always thinks that it is something more sinister..

My symptoms are / have been..

Tight / Uncomfortable sensation whilst swallowing, like there is something there.

Constant thinking about the sensation of swallowing ( due to constant throat sensations)

Clicking in throat when swallowing, worse when drinking liquid.

Stabbing pains under jaw

Feeling that there is something coating the back of my toungue

Senstations worse when tired but not as bad in a morning when i wake up

Long term tickly cough 4-5 months

Different food and drink irritates my throat

My tests/ treatment over the last two years include..

Loads of blood tests including several full tests

Six endoscopies ( camera up nose looking down at throat) with 4 different consultants

One Gastroscopy ( camera down throat & oesophagus to look for damage / anything sinister)

Lots of different Doctors and Consultants feeling my Lymph glands

CBT (Cognative Behavioural Therapy)

Clinical Psycology (Current)

Lansoprazole (in case i have silent reflux)

Two chest xrays

Diazepam

Citalopram

Propanolol

All tests came back clear.. But even after all that lot I am still no better with the Globus and have a second Gastroscopy coming up in early February to check for changes to the condition of my oesophagus and throat since the last one

Please message me if you have had or are having simlar experiences with Globus as it is driving me to distraction at the moment..

I look forward to hearing from you

Best Wishes to all fellow sufferers... I will update after next gastroscopy.

So my mom is experiencing the same thing. It has been about two to two and a half weeks since she felt the lump in her throat. She has allerigies so she though it was a clump of mucus stuck in her throat. But then it persists for the 2 weeks and it sort of runs everywhere. She has depression, anxiety, and a little OCD. Not sure if it is Globus but there is no pain in her throat but uncomfortable because of the lump. It feels better when she swallows but I don't know.. It's sort of scaring me and her doctor isn't doing much. Gave her a fluticasone nasal spray and penicillin. They haven't diagnosed her with anything yet but I'm guessing it is Global. What do I do?

Dear "globus kid" and all others who worries about your "globus"! As "old doctor" I have written before and tried to explain my view. I have soon worked for 40 years as an ENT doctor and must have met many thousand persons with this ´"globus" problem. I will tell you - the "profession" has not a definite definition of the problem. My view: the condition is by definition harmless. There is no cure (except by information). The very simple course is a change in the mucous system in your throat where your normally have a lot av valuable, "good"  mucous. If that changes, and that could happen by a lot of reasons, you loose the normal "lubrication" function och start to "feel" every swollowing, and you swallow normally about 900 times a day. The very unhappy development is that when you start to experience the globus sensation it is very difficult to resist the "automatic"

reflex to start to hawk, croak och swallow extensivly, which strenghtens the symtoms and the you get problems with the increasing muscular burden of swallowing- and from other throuthmuscles. They get tired and sore, and the globus sensation is  increased. I am sorry to say, but my experience is that you are not going to get rid of the "globus", you will have to live with it, but wneh you really understand what it really is - yoy don´t care.

    I really hope so.

Thanks 'old doctor', actually getting a potential explanation is massively helpful! I think that was one of the things that had been really getting to me is that no one seemed to have an explanation! When it was particularly bad, I went to see three separate doctors (1 at A&E) and not one of them actually looked in my throat!

Thankfully (*touch wood*) mine has been significantly better recently, only appearing a couple of times in a month. This information is really reassuring though, so thank you very much for this!

My mom started like 2-3 weeks ago. Lots of mucus and it's really bothering her. She has depression, anxiety and she gets really nervous whenever this happens. None of the doctors know she has this. They think it's just a sore throat or whatever. And lately she's feeling really weak, not sure if it's because she's not eating enough or what. What can I do to or she can do to help herself?

I have read your posts with interest  and they do offer a great comfort  when suffering from this alarming condition.

I gave up smoking in February, then had a tooth abcess and was given antibiotics,

.I immediately developed a really bad sore throat for about a week and when it went I had acid reflux and due to no smoking put on a stone in weight due to eating comfort chocolate.

i have a cnstant feeling of something n my throat, have to swallow a lot and first thing n the morning feel sick.

iI have had several visits to GP and she thnks it is a stomach ulcer I have had a full blood test and that was fine and I now have an appointment with a gastro doctor on July 30

I have waited so long for this appointment and naturally have worried that it could be somehi g more serious, I hav not been given an medication, but have bought Zantac and when I do have an acid stomach take Gaviscon.  I do not like the idea of a gastroscopy and will do my best to lose weight before the appointment and may e even cancel it. I am going swimming tomorrow.

thank you for your informative post

    Annie

Hello.  I've been dealing with this sensation for about 10 months and my resume of tests is almost identical.  I had a couple of questions for everyone.

I'm 40 years old and for my entire life I have been able to ride roller coasters and fly on planes with no problems.  A few times since this globus hit me last year, I've had a choking like feeling when taking off on an airplane or when going on roller coasters.  The coaster felt like I was physically going to choke and I could literally and physically feel the senation move up and down and left and right as the ride moved.  This happened three times on an elevator going down as well.

Also, if I put my chin to my chest it literally changes the sensation.  Sometimes it feels sharp.  Othertimes it just changes the sensation.

Is that normal?   I've told a few doctors that I think they must be missing something if I can physically feel it altering.  I've ridden roller coasters, planes and elevators for 40 years with no problem and now this has really impacted me.   I've been asking for an ultrasound of my neck and jaw but they are telling me there is nothing there.  Just curious if anyone else has had this "moving" feeling during activities live I've described.

    Thanks.

I am 24year old female. From last few days like 3-4days I am feeling some sensation in my throat like some one is holding my throat and before that I was suffering with cough continuously for 2weeks. I feel so uncomfortable with this and it becomes more when i speak with someone. I donot have any kind of pain there. Can you please suggest me that what is this and how I will able to overcome this.

And, one more thing is the reason behind this is depression in anyway.

Dear "globus (hystericus)" persons. I have written before about the subject as "old doctor". I am not sure that my view will help, will convince you, but I will try again.

My firm conviction from 40 years as ENT-doctor is that you should be examined by

an experienced (preferable old) ENT-doctor. When you have got your diagnose: "globus", that is the end. Further examinations, test are useless. You will not get rid of the globus sensation, but you will know that it is harmless, it is not  a disease, ande the very simple cause is the dryness of your throath. No doctor can change that. In my view the big trouble with "globus" is your anxiousness - you have a very definite feeling that something "is wrong" in your throuth, but your doctor finds "nothing". Are you happy with this?

    Best regards,

    "old doctor"

I know this is a little late for the thread but i just wanted to add that it was apples that gave me what i think (not officially diagnosed yet)  is globus. very briefly i thought i had IBS start as my dad was dying of cancer. It seems to have caught up with my gallbladder causing ,you guessed it acid reflux, so i went on a gallbladerand liver cleanse this year. This started with eating alot of apples and drinking a litre of apple juice during the day. Malic acid breaks down the liver and gallbladder stones. however the apple juice in particular seemed to irritate my throat and. directly  felt like it was being stripped of mucus. Directly after drinking this it felt awfull. swollen to the right side. but it is subsiding though it does have its days. I suppose worrying about IBS,Gallbladder,Liver ..

then this just made it worse.

So i,m 50 and have had this for about 6 months.

Hi Jason I too am 50 and struggle with ibs . My whole experience of globus started after eating loads of lovely fresh apples from my orchard so to hear about your apple juice diet makes me cringe a little. Apples are very acidic to sensitive throats, I would swap the apple juice for skimmed milk or water. My dad was dying of cancer too when my symptoms started as I suffered badly with anxiety.

Drop apples and apple juice and let me know how you get on.. also you might want to try a wedge pillow to prop you up in bed st night so you never get any reflux to your throat..

      Good luck friend..

Not sure if anyone will see this as its an older thread now. I'm a globus sufferer too. Had 2 visits to ENT and had the scope, nothing there as expected, but the sensation still persists now a year later. It's bearable sometimes, and awful at others. So so hard to control. Does anyone throat end up quite painful with the constant swallowing? I find I'm forcing swallows a lot to try and shift a lump that I know isn't there! So aggravating

Hello, I know this is wayyyyyy after you first posted this but I just wondered if I could compare some symptoms. I have suffered from heartburn/ reflux for a while over Christmas and I started out with a slightly weird feeling near my Adam's apple, now I've been getting anxious about it I feel a small lump below the apple as if something like saliva or phlegm is sitting there and the more I worry the more I notice this sensation and likewise, if I stop thinking about it and my mind is preoccupied it disappears. Have you experienced this/ had any luck getting rid. I'm on anti acids for the reflux which is working but still experiencing this lump.

    Thanks

Globus is such a complex thing, while it can be related to reflux etc,it can also be purely anxiety related. As you say it disappears when preoccupied may suggest it's purely anxiety. If you address any anxiety issues you may find it disappears.

Thank you for your prompt reply! Yeh it's strange, varies from day to day. I'll request referral to a specialist but I'm not overly worried about it, I think the initial anxiety stemmed from a pain caused by severe reflux after really unhealthy Christmas binging.

      Thanks again

      Hi James89447,

I do feel your pain. I have developed the same symptoms in the past 3 weeks and I have been very worry. I am going to see a GP today. On top of the feeling like somethign stuck in my throat, I start to feel a bit of flamation around the base of my neck. Today is particulary difficult. Some day, I feel the thing is quite big and some day, it feels smaller. I am quite afraid if it was to turn into something serious like a tumour of some kind. I am glad I found this forum because it makes me feel I'm not the only one suffering from the symptom. I suspect that the GP cannot exactly tell me what's wrong but I do hope he/she refers me to see the specialist. Some day I feel like it's hard to breath. I hope you get better soon. Please keep us posted.
