Are there any comprehensive do's and don'ts for newly diagnosed Barretts Oesophagus sufferers??

Hi folks,

This is my first posting to the Barretts Oesophagus group, having just been diagnosed with Barretts and a Hiatus Hernia on my Birthday (what a birthday present). I am amazed at how quickly the symptoms have arisen. Suddenly I can eat very little (both in quantity and variety) and trying to find my way around what I should eat, drink etc. I feel left in limbo by my consultant and GP, who just said I would have an endoscopy every 2 years, and that I needed to manage it well or it could lead to cancer, a bit worrying when they are not advising me what I should do!

Are there any diet sheets available or a comprehensive do and don't hand book??

Regards

Larraine

As told to by the Dr along with b12 and vit d anyways he believes that since I am on twice a day protonix 20 mg each anyways a shot later and I felt a lot better also upped my dose of magnesium to 800 mg a day RDA is only 400mg but he said that I'm lucky to absorb 200 to 300 mg a day due to low acid

    Larraine,

Definitely do not panic, do not worry about Barretts. Just look after your health, may be pay some attention to the foods that you eat if you suffer from heartburn.

Six years ago I was diagnosed and i spent my first few months panicking..looking back it was such a waste.

There is only a very tiny increased risk that this might progress so  my advice is jus tchill out !

Hi Larraine and all on this thread...

My first posting here as well.  I am so thrilled to find this forum and have been reading the posts with such interest and much relief.  I live in South Africa but there doesn't seem to be any kind of support network down in this far flung corner of the world for Barrett's patients and so I hope you will all suffer me joining in as I really need some support.

I found out last week that I have early stage Barrett's and am seeing my specialist on Thursday this week.  I'm trying not to overreact because I know that at this stage it's "non-threatening" and if we can manage my gastric reflux properly either with meds and some lifestyle changes, I should be okay neutral.  But the unknown is always a bit scary.  My father had oesophogeal cancer and it was a terrible, traumatic time for him especially, but for all of us to go through. He battled the disease for two years after drastic surgery and lost the fight.

What led to the discovery of my Barrett's was that I was losing weight rapidly, was constantly nauseous and vomiting and felt generally unwell.  My GP sent me to the specialist who ordered a battery of scans and x-rays and they picked up gallstones.  Deciding this was what was probably the cause of my symptoms, he took out the GB at the end of March and did a gastroscopy at the same time to check the oesophagus and stomach.  There was the beginning of infection in the GB and the gastroscopy showed everything to be clean, pink and shiny. However, it did reveal a small uncomplicated sliding hiatus hernia. (Note that I'd had no symptoms of reflux before this).  Since the surgery, the nausea and vomiting haven't stopped, I've lost more weight (I went from 72kg to 65kg in 2 months) and I've had two major gastritis attacks (the first had me at the local emergency room on suspicion of a heart attack eek), the second time around, knowing what it was I rode it out - frightening as it was.  The specialist did the second gastroscopy and all of a sudden I have Barrett's... it just all seems to be happening a bit faster than it should by what I have read.

However, as I say, I will not panic.  I'm going to hear what the specialist says on Thursday and take it from there - one step at a time.

Thanks for "listening" to my long story... it's just so great to find people who know what I'm talking about and who have been through the same thing.

    Blessings

    Hi,

This is also my first post to the Barrett's Esophagus group. I'm sorry to hear you were diagnosed with Barretts. I hope we can all find some comfort in this group, and I'm looking forward to hearing about people's experiences in fighting this condition. I had an endoscopy done last week and they found a small segment in my lower esophagus suggestive of Barrett's. They took a biopsy, and now I'm waiting for the results. I had a Stretta procedure done 5 months ago to fix my Lower sphincter valve. It takes a while for the procedure to start working. The esophagitis is still pretty bad, and because I cannot tolerate ppis my condition has got worse over the last few months.  Has anyone tried d-limonene for acid reflux?
