Hi! I have had rheumatoid arthritis now for 30 years. I am now 52 but still remember the very day it came on me. I had been stirring cookie dough while babysitting my nephew. It started to hurt then in my wrists and fingers, and that night the pain pulsated in my hand and down my fingers. I thought at first it was because I had been stirring the dough too hard. But after a week of pain, and not sleeping because of the pain, I went to the doctor who referred me to a rheumatologist who put me on medicine. The medicine I have been able to take controls the pain and the progression of the arthritis. Over the last 30 years I have developed pain in my toes, knees, hips, my back and my neck and even in my chest. The disease itself has not and I believe never will have a cure. Today I work at Kohl's which is very physically demanding and I do get fatigued with it and very tired. However having such a physical job I am able to keep moving. Without it I would get stiff and not be moving very well at all. The pain is in check and I am able to type and do what I need to do. My joints ache but are not painful. Some people can't take the medicine that is offered. But it is worth it if you can. I believe without the medicine I would be dead from the pain right now. Because of the medicine I have been able to take, the arthrtis hasn't beaten me yet. I am one of the lucky ones and haven't had any bad side effects from the medications. I for one am glad for science and the help it offers to those that suffer.

So sorry to hear how long you have had RA. I wondered if climate and diet have effect on the arthritis?! What do you think?

I havent been diagnosed with RA.. I was referred to a Rheumatologist bacause of my joint pain. Ido notice that the pain feels worse on cloudy days though and I have heard and someone posted that diet has alot to do with inflammation. I am not really big on fast food but I also dont eat alot alot fruits and vegetables like I should either , I will be changing that and see what happens.

Hey! I know that cold and damp weather can make the pain worse. I have walked my dog in the cold and was almost in tears walking uphill. My dog is older now and doesn't walk too well herself so I keep her at home in the yard.
As far as diet, I tried to eat right when I was younger, watching my weight and so on and I never noticed a difference in pain level with that. I now have IBS to deal with and can only eat certain foods without making that bad. I think the IBS came on because I was watching my weight and eating a lot of fiberous foods which was not good for my digestive system. Now I don't watch my weight and eat only what I need to feel full and satisfied. But I don't really think that it affects my arthrits one way or the other.
Like I said I am just so glad for the medicines that are offered today that can help the pain and the joint damage.
