Assurance Needed

Have had trouble with full hip movement since my 20s, but 5 years ago at 48 years went to GP as pain bad enough for me yo be limping.  Under the hosp and am diagnosed osteo-arthritis in both hips but quite severe in right hip.  I go hosp every 6 months and they ask do I want to go on hip replacement list (am on meds).  I always give it another 6 months.  Am now 54 next month and am in pain and have very little sideways movement in my hips but right one is VERY painful.  I think I am at the end of my tether with it and am ready for t, but would like some assurance if poss from you who have been through the op.

Hi I'm 48 and have just had the operation 2 weeks ago .

My life was getting unbearable could hardly walk . I can already feel the pain is better .Apart from the obvious post op pain.

I'm so excited with the thought of being pain free. Didn't want to waste anymore of my life moaning . Hope this helps.

    Best wishes joe ☺

Aww thanks Joe.  Just the sort of thing I need to hear.  I want to walk my dogs again and trying to get on the back of hubby's motorbike the other day after a 20 year break really shook me.  I just could not move my roght leg wide enough to sit down.  Life is definitely passing me by.  Good luck with recovery.

Although I have had a few upsets along the way I would still recommend replacement if it has gotten to the point that it is affecting your quality of life. I have had a dislocation and fallen once.  I have had to go back to walking with a cane due to pain in the thigh and one I'm going back to physical therapy to build muscle to prevent any more dislocation.  I am 72 years old and have been active all my life.  My new hip feels great and I feel like I'm on the road to recovery.  Just imagine no more pain!  That's what you'll most likely get if u have a replacement.

    Hello Millie

I am 7 weeks post op and say go for it. Although convalescence is challenging the pain from osteoarthritis goes away. I am 66 and almost back to normal. Have my check up next week and hope to be given the all clear and restrictions lifted

    Good luck

Hello, I am 10 weeks post op at the age of 42 and can honestly say that I am starting to feel like my old self. I too suffer from osteo in both hips but my right I have no pain at the moment to resort to a replacement. I was very limited with my life's activities and the pain was becoming unbearable. I would definitely say go for it.

    Good Luck

hi im 52 i was 50 when told i had early onset arthritis in my left hip.in the year that followed it went from a bit painful to very painfulwith a limp.had another xray and it had completely fallen apart so only choice was hip replacement.i was told 6 to 8 months but 14 mths later i was still waiting. In that time my pelvis had twisted really badly and my bad leg was a completely different length so walking became unbearably painful and i ended up with a walking stick (i had to swallow my pride to use it)it was the only way i could walk and iwas dragging my leg somedays in agony.eventually i was sent to a treatment centr in brisol (i live in brecon in wales)called The Brooms,Emerson Green.i would have had to wait unyil september this year if i had not agreed to go to another hospital as they said they have a bed shortage in Neville Hall my local hospital. It was the best decission i could have made.I am 6 weeks post op today and apart from the stiffness and forcing myself to rest it has been ok.i was really worried about the whole op thing but it was amazing, you can not believe such a big op can be relatively pain free.i would just go for it before you get worse,im sure i would have been in a wheel chair if id have carried on.Dont know which one of my 4 kids would have offerd to push me mind.probably none of them lol xx

Hi Millie , three years ago I was dianosed with osteo in my right hip and a little in my left but my left gradualy caught up with my left so 7 weeks ago I had a biolateral replacement , not all surgeons will do two at once mind you but you are young and if you had the option of a double I would recomend it .  I am 50 and resonably fit so that helps with recovery . I can now drive and walk round the town and do my own shopping with one crutch and none round the house . Not quite walking the dogs on my own but I go with my daugher but that wont be long . I will have physio next Tuesday so that will help with some stiffness that I still have . The first two weeks are pretty hard but that once is passed its onwards and upwards . I was at the end of my tether with the pain so something had to be done . My husband had a farmer friend who is 15 years older than me and had the double so I just thought if he can do it I can ! Have you been put on the list yet ? Good luck with what you decide , Ruth

Go for it!  I spent two years of progressive pain and immobility to finally take the plunge. I am three months post op now and sooo glad I had it done. The thinking about it was far worse than the actual op.  this forum is also a great help. Put an end to your pain, you have suffered for so long. It will be the best decision. Good luck xx

    Hi

I had mine done end of Jan this year and I'm glad I've had it done.

As I live in the city I walk a lot average 8 miles a day and swim 3X a week without any pain. My op leg is now straight and both of my legs are of equal size. Prior to the operation my right leg was weak and thinner than the left (good) leg.

Personally I really am glad that I had it done as my quality of life is much much better.

it's always good to read about hip replacement and prepare yourself mentally, do exercise or go swimming to keep fit and build up your muscle.

it will be over quickly and you will be glad you have it done.

    Best of luck

Hi Mollie, go for it, next time they ask say yes, your hipmwill only get worse now and the pain worse and you'll still have to wait for the op. Having a hip replacement is like getting a new lease of life.

Thankyou to all for taking time to answer and being so supportive.  Definitely going to ask to be put on the list at next weeks appointment.  They said waiting was about three months when I last asked.  Good luck to you all, and many thanks. X

Hi millie. ...I am 2 years 1 month post op. I was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at tge age of 13 and suffered all my life after having pins screws etc put in hips. They said I would be in a wheelchair by 50 but I'm 55 now THR ....and TKR 9 weeks ago. Hip was the best thing I ever had done. I kind of woke up and couldn't understand why I didn't have pain. Hardly need painkillers as the after surgery pain was nothing like the pain my hip was giving me so go for it hunni ypu won't regret it. smile

Dear Millie ... Sounds so familiar - I  was in denial for a while and thought it would get better - IT DOES NOT ... just like you I had to use a cane at some point (kept dropping it all the time and other people had to pick it up for me .... goodbye pride)-

I am 7 weeks post op - recovery is challenging and we are all here to encourage each other, share our dark moments and celebrate each others victories  - the operation it self ead not as bad as I anticipated - actually it went really well -

I wish I had found this forum prior surgery - it would have taken a lot of anxiety, worries and fears away ... you still have to go through it but will be so much better prepared .... have a good night ... warm hug and know that all is well ...

I was supposed to be going for surgery May 1st. And it got rescheduled.

i have to wait until the 15th. I had not expected to get as angry as I did when told my surgery was postponed.

I'm nervous as hell, getting both hips replaced at 43, but walking (waddling) and being in constant pain just can't be my life anymore.

I want to go to theme parks with my daughter again, instead of having to stay home. Walk the dog again. Live.

I'm scared, yes, but I feel it's worth having it done. And so should you. Life's too short to spend it waddling like a Batman villain right? Chin up!
