Has anyone used Avodart, and if so, For how long, did you experience any side effects and was it effective in reducing your prostate?

Hi ES and all you guys out there ...
just a quick update on Georges HIFU all went well and this Monday had catheter removed, must say he was glad to see the back of it,,, nurses at hospital were pleased with his urine flow even though he did have some blood but this is expected after HIFU...normal for abt 8weeks..
George has actually said the worst part of this procedure is having the catheter and on the whole HIFU is virtually pain free....so now we have follow up in 3 months time with a psa blood test these will continue.. And hoping all will be well as an increase in psa will indicate something has returned.
So In theory all Cancer should be gone..
Oh he didn't need any pain killers once home from hospital??
Regards Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
So glad to hear George is doing well. I am tentatively planning to have the HIFU procedure the middle to end of August. If I may ask, did George have the whole Prostate treated or just the area with cancer? Also, how was his mobility during the time of having the catheter. I'm asking because I will need to return to work as quickly as possible and my job requires me to do a fair amount of walking around. (No lifting, just walking around). So, I'm wondering if the catheter made George walk slower or impeded his movement. I will have to have the catheter for up to 10 days so I need to let my employer know how much time I need off before I can return to work. And when I return to work, if I will be moving slow due to pain or the inconvenience of the catheter.

ES I had a diffrent procedure done and only have a catheter in for 5 days. I did not go to work but I did go to the store and drove my son to the court house I did not put any underware on just a lose pair of pants. Just make sure its taped to your leg good. So you don't want to pull it out. You should be fine. No running a 3 mile run. Just take it easy Ken

Hello ES
George had Focused HIFU which was only where the cancer was on the right hand side of prostate....so he had abt 40% of prostate removed, Uroligist give the cancer cells a wide berth to make sure they get it all!.
Cathater was ok but the day time bag only held 500 ml so as you have to drink a lot had to go to bathroom abt every 1 1/2 hrs or so.... Walking abt was fine but not to far, as the more you walk the Cather can eritate the prostate and make it bleed more, in Georges case was made worse as he is on blood thinners, but this only seemed to happen more on the last 2 or 3 days.. He only went out 2 times for a walk which was abt 20 mins, but I suppose everyone is different.. 1 guy who we met last week drove his car on a few occasions and was fine he didn't bleed at all but didn't walk!. If you wear lose jogging bottoms or baggy cotton trousers it's fine coz only you know it's there..you just have to be careful.. So walking abt is fine and George walked normally I thought he done very well..
Really cannot believe he's had this surgery as he is absolutely fine.. Just some blood in urine when he pee's we were told this is all normal and can last up to 8 weeks..
i agree with Ken make sure you have it strapped to your upper thigh good as George had the bag on the bottom of his calf and when he was sitting down he un done the strap as he felt it a little uncomatable at times.
showering was fine he left his bag on.. We actually googled this on you tube how to shower with catheter, it was very good information better than the information from hospital..
Hope this has reassured you and has given you some insight..
feel free to ask anything anytime.
Regards Carolyn

i would say allow yourself at least 3/4 days of work after procedure as George was very tired after Anesthetic ..
