Back pain and IBS

Posted , 104 users are following.

I've recently been diagnosed with IBS after a bad bout of what I thought was trapped wind. The symptoms listed in various articles seem to bear this diagnosis out. However, nothing much is said about back pain. My IBS spasms start with bad back pain which then spreads round the right side to the front (I think it's called the epigastrium).

It mainly starts in the evenings and can end as abruptly as it starts for no apparent reason, leaving me feeling pretty tired. Otherwise I go and lie down and it eventually eases off.

Does anyone else get this with IBS?

I had terrible lower back pain due to IBS.  My doctor prescribed a drug called Dicyclomine 20mg 2Xdaily.

That was 10 years ago.  Since that time my back pain has all but disappeared.  When I do get occassional discomfort, it it is much milder.  I can usually get complete relief by eating a high fiber diet.

      Hope this helps.

Just read your post.i am deeply sorry for your condition.i know exactly what you are going thru as I have been suffering with this horrid syndrome for 10 yrs.i have now been experiencing back ache along with hemmoroid pain.its a nightmare.dr after dr no real help.i had to turn to medical cannabis.it does help but I have to battle emotions because I was never a smoker of cannabis so I feel ashamed because of the stigma with cannabis.its the only thing that helps.i wish us all the best in this battle.fight on & bless you

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I'm unable to try medicak cannabis as it isn't on offer here in the UK. The only thing I find helpful is s TENS machine which takes the edge off the pain. Without it I don't know how I would survive.

      Haemorrhoids are another curse!

      Best wishes,

      Ian

Dude I wouldn't worry about it. Cannabis is also the biggest thing that helps me. Stigma I care not. It's not like we lay around and play games and eat all day. My job is quite physical and a little dangerous so the last thing I want is to be under the influence at work. So I rough it out 10-12 hrs a day. Just saying there is no need to feel bad about yourself for getting relief from a plant that I believe exists for medical reason anyway.

Am also struggling with the same problem, I've experienced this back pain from last week and is not stopping, I feel it everyday. Especially when am eating I feel it so much and is very bad am worrying so much about it.

I think I have to go and make an HIV test because it is also one of the symptoms after you have been affected with HIV virus ,but am not saying every back pain is a symptoms of HIV I just want to make sure if am HIV positive or negative.

Hi just read your post. See that's it's over year old, but looking for advice also. GP thot I had stomach infection. However it cleared for few days and now back again. Have to go to loo after I eat, stomach cramps etc. But back ache has been an issue also. It comes & goes but very sore. Any advice on how to deal with the ibs symptoms until I see my GP again? It's making me exhausted.

Hi all.I have IBS too and for years I thought my back pain was kidney related as the pain I get is exactly like kidney pains. My doctor and many specialists have treated me for everything from a UTI to an enlarged prostate.I have just recently suspected that the back pain might be IBS related and here you all are with the same symptom. Those of you with IBS and back pain can you please tell me if it feels like kidney pain ? thanks and I wish you all well.

yes it deos, exactly!  I kept getting tested and they would come back clear, but he gave me antibiotics anyway just in case. would feel very slightly better for a while then it would return. I had a bad chest infection recently and had antibiotics and steroids for it. Afterwards when i was better i had no pain whatsoever for about a week. it was fantastic. Then it returned and got worse with worry and stress over xmas, and has been bad since due to big events happening soon that i am not looking forward to.

I too have had severe back pain radiating around ribs , terrible headaches and all these symptoms make one feel

Agitated. Does anyone else feel like this?

i have back pain only on right side which seems to cause diarrhea too.  After reading comments on this site im sure its ibs. it comes randomly and can vary in how painfull it is. ive had it for ages but just in background mostly. At the moment it is very bad which coincides with bad stress. There are some big events coming up this year that im not looking forward to (Like building work) and i am trying not to worry until nearer the time, but it is probably there subconciously as the pain etc is very bad. the pain feels like a flu pain inside and  is feels tender, and also like wind. It goes a little better after toilet, but not much. it makes sense that it would be ibs because the pain was always eratic in strength and worse over stressful times. Normal painkiller tablets like paracetamol dont touch it. It helped reading thes comments and enabled me to work out what the backache was. Thats one problem down anyway.

I am NOT a healthcare professional, but you might want to looks at the symptoms for mesenteric ischemia. It's pretty rare, but you might want to ask your Dr. about it,
