Back pain and IBS

I've recently been diagnosed with IBS after a bad bout of what I thought was trapped wind. The symptoms listed in various articles seem to bear this diagnosis out. However, nothing much is said about back pain. My IBS spasms start with bad back pain which then spreads round the right side to the front (I think it's called the epigastrium).

It mainly starts in the evenings and can end as abruptly as it starts for no apparent reason, leaving me feeling pretty tired. Otherwise I go and lie down and it eventually eases off.

Does anyone else get this with IBS?

I have had similar symptoms - today in fact - after mowing the lawn,

and was very exhausted as I have been fighting off Whooping cough

for 6 weeks, followed by a right ear infection during week 5 &6, then

    a left earinfection week 7 and 8 (currently) - taking Penicillin-VK

for the left Ear (eustachian tube discomfort).

So I layed down on the couch for two hours then ate a light dinner

of ham on toast - with a can of whole cranberry sauce.

Cranberries or cranberry juice daily - help to fight Liver, Kidney, Bladder and

    Urinary Tract infections.

    Best of Luck to you....

    cheers,

    Nick

I would go back to see your doctor as this could be gall bladder related

I know this is an old post but I've just been diagnosed with IBS and have severe back pain. I've been in constant discomfort from the symptoms of IBS for the past 3 months but only got the back pain after throwing my back out a month ago while hovering. It's now a dull constant pain in the lumber of my back that gets worse when I bend but I also get pain in my lower rib cage when the symptoms get really bad. I'm glad other people are experiencing the back pain was starting to think I was on train to crazy town or that I had been misdiagnosed. Any advise other than taking the mebeverine tablets on how to calm down the symptoms would be handy I'm still feeling a bit scared that this is my constant reality.

Hazel..your story has truly touched me. You just described what it took my doctor 3 weeks to tell me. He went from possible muscle spasms, reflux that went to my back and then to kidney stone. Finally today he called and said irretal bowel syndrome after all xrays and blood work came back normal. That is exactly how mines started. I had the squeezing pain in my back coming along my right side to my stomach. I thought it was gas and not to mention ive been bloated for 2 whole weeks. I can not wait to go and pick up my prescription. Thank you for sharing smile

Hazel, I definitely have a connection between cramping, bloating, etc and lower back pain with my IBS.  The backpain, which can be quite dibilitating, magically subsides when the bowel symptoms ease off, usually after a bowel movement. Every time I ask a doctor if there is a connection between abdominal pain and back pain, they look at me like I'm an anatomy flunkie.

In November,  I put myself on a Candida diet with increased probiotics. ( I have a history of extensive rounds of antibiotics years ago secondary to Lyme disease.) All the gas, bloating, sharp pains, constipation subsided within 2 days of starting the diet. The problem, however, is reintroducing foods.  As long as I am STRICT with the diet my IBS symtoms are almost gone.

Personally, I do not think IBS is psychosomatic. I never had it when I was working under very stressful conditons.  I think that perhaps it is secondary to neurotoxins from opportunistic microbes or some such thing.

I have been suffering with ibs for a few years but I can't seem to find what triggers it?

but when I get a bout of it I'm in complete agony. I get it in my tummy, my left side and my back. I've been out today for the day with my children and friends and my day was completely spoilt. At times I could hardly walk, my back so so bad. Then coming home in the car I just didn't know what to do with myself was in so much pain.

Think I'll go to the doctors and see if there's anything they can give me???

I don't even know if Hazel still reads this as it was over a year ago she posted. I get pain in my lower left back right after a bout of going to the washroom to have several bowel movements every morning. Once I finish all my bowel movements I am pretty tired out and that lower back pain starts. I think it is spastic bowel from all the bowel movements that cause this pain as well as inflamation. I take asperin and it takes away the pain of the lower right back.

I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this too.  Your symptoms sound the same as mine.. simply awful.   Even worse is the attitutude of the hospital staff.... they can't zerio in on what's causing it, and in one case, they thought I was faking the symptoms.  I'm going to a different hospital now, and their attiutde is so much more epathatic - though no solution (yet)

I had the same attitude at my doctors surgery, I had ibs symptoms two years ago and they knew I suffered alot from bloating and constipation, they just told me to eat more fibre.  It wasn,t until a new doctor came to the surgery and he did tests to rule out anything other than ibs and it came back i do have ibs and at the end of Jan I have an appointment to see a Nutrionist and Dietician which I am feeling positive about as a diet could help me and give me back my life.
