Back pain and IBS

I've recently been diagnosed with IBS after a bad bout of what I thought was trapped wind. The symptoms listed in various articles seem to bear this diagnosis out. However, nothing much is said about back pain. My IBS spasms start with bad back pain which then spreads round the right side to the front (I think it's called the epigastrium).

It mainly starts in the evenings and can end as abruptly as it starts for no apparent reason, leaving me feeling pretty tired. Otherwise I go and lie down and it eventually eases off.

Does anyone else get this with IBS?

Hii I'm so glad I came across this forum, I've been suffering from bis now for the last 7yrs. None of the medication I've used in the past has helped me. The last 8months I've been walking for at least an hour a day and drinking plenty of water, but I was unable to do my daly walking for the last week and my constipation and lower back pain has started again. Philippe forever I'm willing to try aloe Vera can you please give me the brand name I'm in Australia I hope I can find it over here I'm desperate

I get exactly the same sequence and stomach ulcers have been ruled out. I'm still looking for a link between Gallstones and IBS symptoms - I have proven problems with gallstones and it seems when they move and block the ducts then my food doesn't digest and my IBS like symptoms appear. This happens on and off - I may go weeks without any discomfort and then a week of solid pains. I can always tell from the size of my stomach - if its "high" in the mornings then I'm in for pain but if its dropped then I know my food is digesting and all is well.

Hi all. Feeling less anxious after reading these posts. I have been suffering for over a year now. My pain or discomfort as I like to call it is mainly in my right side, starts under ribs and can move around to the back and down the right side and across my abdomen. My GP has sent me for numerous check ups to rule out anything too serious like colonoscopy and full abdoninal ultrasound all coming back clear. I am a worrier which I definitely think adds to my symptoms. Also I always feel worse for about a week if I drink any alcohol. Sometimes I could empty the bowels up to 4-5 times a day, mostly suffer diarrhoea more so than constipation which is less frequent. Also when I bloat I look 6 months pregnant! I have bad wind most days.

Your pain indications around the back seem to point to a liver related issue...

Have your GP run some liver function tests.

In any case ALL patients suspecting IBS or recently diagnosed with IBS need to rule out Lactose Intolerance - by taking the "Do it yourself home test," which lasts for TWO WEEKS:

      1. Read the label on EVERYTHING and AVOID ALL Lactose, Lactose Monohydrate (found in some antibiotic tablet formulations/medications as a secondary ingredient used to hold the tablet together).

      2. AVOID ALL MILK, ICECREAM, DAIRY - use Soy Milk on your cereal instead.

      3. If a sauce is white - avoid it. No creme de .

      4. At the end of two weeks - drink a half of glass of whole milk. In 15 - 30 minutes you'll know without a doubt if you are POSITIVE for LACTOSE Intolerance.

But be ready with the ANTIDOTE which is LACTAID or similar Lactase Enzyme Digestive Aid, as it will alleviate the nasty symptoms of gas, cramps, constipation and diarrhea.

Cranberries or cranberry juice daily - help to fight Liver, Kidney, Bladder and

      Urinary Tract infections.

      Best of Luck to you....

      cheers,

      Nick

Sorry to hear that Nicola, I could relate to your symptoms coz I used to suffer the same. But the answer to your problem is not where you are looking, untill the cause of the disease is dealt with IBS will remain forever.

Nicola I have been dealing with IBS for bout 3 years. Recent 4 months treatment with unani medications has treated me completely.I could say that it has addressed the cause of the problem.

I did a Google search just now to try to figure out what the heck is going on with me. Reading a lot of these post here really make me think I could have IBS. This problem started last year. Always at night time when I had been sleep. Woken up with a horrible upper center stomach ache/cramp and tense center back pain/cramp. It would always be a sudden onset that could last 1-2 hours and then gone. The only relief I really got was forcing a burp and standing (which really isn't the most comfortable thing to do a 4am). Now this is the odd part, I had these symptoms for a few weeks then it all went away. Throughout the year I had maybe 3 random events with it. Now all of a sudden a year and 1 month after it has struck again. I have had this issue 5 of the last 7 days. Last time my Dr. said it was probably my gal bladder but honestly I didn't think my symptoms quite matched and my diet had never changed either (which isn't the best diet). I opted out of the surgery to take my Gal bladder because I wasn't comfortable with it....everyone was trying to take it but no one could say that it was for sure my cause and would help me and also my Dr. said I'm probably just anxious...

So anyway I'm here now, reading stories just like mine but still not certain and with one big question...would IBS just go away for a year then come back like this with no change in diet or really anything? Thank you.

I've recently been diagnosed with IBS by my GP.  I suffer with constipation trapped wind and lower back ache.  Trouble is I find it all so tiring and what with being an anxious person anyway, this condition really is too much at times.  I've tried Mebeverine which I found helped my indigestion problem but I now suffer with lower back ache and constipation seems worse,   so have stopped the mebeverine for a few days to see if the constipation and lower back pain ease up

I have had IBS for years. I also have the back pain and it goes to my right shoulder blade. When I try to eliminate, I only go a little. I end up going several times before I feel like I'm done going. Sometimes, I can't even finish a meal before I have to go. It makes it hard to go out with friends and I always have to know where the nearest bathroom is. My heart goes out to all of you. I know exactly how you all feel.

Hi, I realise that this is an old post but I thought I would add my experience because it may help someone with the same symptoms.  I suffered with 'IBS' (or so I was told) for years, but one day I literally couldn't get out of bed from chronic pain in my back and stomach.  The doctors were pretty useless and couldn't tell me what was wrong .. just kept saying it was IBS and that I should eat healthily and take plenty of exercise.  I was not happy about this .. so I did my research and started to think that I may have an intolerance .. I even said to the doctor 'can I be tested for intolerance to various foods' .. she said .. go home and cut them out of your diet for a month at a time and see if it helps (could have told her that myself).  Anyway, to cut a long story short, eventually I realised that wheat products were the cause of the problem .. I stopped drinking beer, cut out bread, cakes, biscuits, pizza .. basically all of the naughty foods, but I continued to eat sweets and other snacks that I didn't realise were also to be a problem because they contained GLUTEN.  Eventually I cut all gluten from my diet and after a couple of months all my pain had gone!  After a short while I started to 'cheat' and sneak the odd bit here and there, and thought I had got away wth it, but after a few weeks the effect was noticeable again and the pain returned.  I now avoid anything that contains gluten and live quite happily on my limited diet .. PAIN FREE .. but if I eat something 'naughty' I know about it the next day as the bloating and 'wind' begins again.  If you are experiencing similare problems check out info on gluten intolerance on the internet .. it might be the answer for you x

I have notice excruciating pain for about 2 years now and had no idea why I was getting it. I was diagnosed with metistatic colon cancer in my liver and thought is was a symptom of the cancer but after reading this article and your comments I have begun to think differently about the pain. I will be asking my Dr about it next I see her and get the available treatment.have not had a good night sleep in almost 2 years and if there is a way to help this pain go away I wencome it! Please give advice as to what questions to ask the dr so I can start on the path to being proactive about this IBS. Thanks for helping me and I will be looking for your comments.

I've read the thread with regard to IBS and now understand that I'm not the only one!

My wife & I had our honeymoon in Majorca in 2000 & I came back with salmonella. Within 3 months of our return I started to have bowel problems and after visiting the doctor I was diaganosed with IBS. To add to the list I was also diagnosed with helicobacter pylori and had 2 courses of treatment to no avail.

I've had camera's down both ends to check for the Big C and eventually my doctor came to the conclusion that I will have to manage my IBS symptoms myself.

I'm a fairly active bloke and hate taking medication. In the past I was offered mbeverine but did not take it regularly although when I did take it it did seem to help me.

I'm a typical bloke, so eat anything but have found what triggers it for me. Although I love a good fry up, sausages, bacon and burgers will normally trigger a bout of diahorrea and flatulence so I try to avoid them if I can.

I have terrible back pain which extends to my hips when bad & groin area when I have a particularly bad attack. It can be terribly debilitating and means that it is difficult to walk. I have explained the symptoms to other people in the past but its difficult to get accross the connection with IBS and back & leg pain to people who do not suffer with IBS.

When I get a bad attack I tend to have the need to locate the toilet whenever we go out and make sure I can get there quickly. When I get the need to go I go. I've had a couple of instances in the past where I've had the need to go and not got there in time and its totally humiliating to mess yourself. I'm a truck driver so I've had occasions in the past when an attack has come on and I've had to go. I always carry loo roll and baby wipes just in case...... sad

I go from periods of lots energy to feeling tired all the time but did not make the link to IBS.

I did not know that Colofac IBS was available over the counter but will start taking some as at the moment I have a particularly bad attack which has lasted for the last 2 weeks.
