Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,
I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.
I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)
I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)
and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)
Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.
I also occasionally get tonsil stones.
I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.
Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.
NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.
I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.
I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.
I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?
Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?
Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to read your text. Just recently I was diagnosed with C-diff and prescribed antibiotic mwtronidazole. Having suffered for years with bad breath at first I thought it my imagination. You just confirmed for me that it is real. Metronidazole did not cure c- diff and now new drug called vancomycin is prescribed. I'm taking it as directed but bad breath has now returned. You have given me the confidence to now pursue this subject aggressively with my gastroenterologist. Thank you.

I replied to this thread a while ago and just wanted to follow up. I, too, suffer from chronic BB and I recently convinced my GI doctor do a Hydrogen Breath Test on me, which checks to see if you have a bacterial overgrowth in your gut. Just like I thought, it was positive. My GI doctor did colonoscopy, endoscopy and he found nothing that could attribute to my bad breath, but after reasearch I learned that bad breath is a symptom of bacterial overgrowth. I am currently on my 7th day of Xifaxan, which is the only antibiotic that fights agaisnt bacterial overgrowth, and I already see an improvement in my breath. Bacterial overgrowth could also easily be causing the tonsil stones, since tonsial stones are pretty much a deposit of bacteria. I would recommend to do a Hydrogen Breath Test, if you have tonsil stones and bad breath, then your problem is most likely initiating from your gut. Hope this helps!

Please inform us on your breath status one week or a month after you finish your dose.

Hi!
You are definitely right. Antibiotics can cause an alteration in your bacterial flora since they kill all bacteria, including the good one, which makes you susceptible to the bad bacteria. However, what I do to combat this is to take a big dose of pro-biotic at the same time I take my antibiotic. The brand I use is Lyfbiotic because it is very clean and free of metals and it's in powder form that taste like vanilla so I just add it to my morning coffee. I asked the doctor and pharmacist if this was ok to do and they both recommended I'd do it. However, I will check back with you in a few weeks with status.

Anyway here it is again
1. Brush ur teeth 3 times a day after every meal
2. Floss with thread in the morning and use tooth pick at night (if u have braces, water pick and toothpick)
3. Tongue scraper at least 2 a day, morning and night, it should be pink.
4. Nostrils cleaned by water at least 2 a day, i mean breath water as if u drown in a water pool.
5. Dentist check if u have gingivitis or periodintis (sth like it) and at least 2 times visit a year
6. Remove ur tonsils, REMOVE UR TONSILS, its a painful process it but the road to success is difficult.
7. Dont use antibiotics, even if prescribed by doctor, try as much as possible to fight disease naturally cuz they destroy ur good bacteria and u need it to fight the bad ones.
8. Eat yoghurt daily and u can buy probiotics over the counter, i tried predental probiotics, its an american brand and it worked magic for me, hope it does for u too. Suck it like lozenges.
9. Drink alot of water, alot like minimum 2 liters a day.
10. Try to workout a bit, sports.
11. Try to reduce alcohol drinks or mouth washes with alcohol.
Finally, try to eat clean, like veges and fruits, reduce sugars to protect urself also against candida yeast, and take care of ur personal hygiene.
Good luck all

Hi! I'm 30 and have been dealing with the same issue for almost 4 years now. I was exposed to black mold unknowingly which gave me constant infections in which I had to take antibiotics for. I went to several doctors and they all pretty much told me I had seasonal allergies. After moving away from the mold and cutting out all carbs and sugar.. (at this point I was experimenting, because I noticed certain foods bothered me and sugar made my breath worse) Not only did doing my own research not do anything for me, but it brought on more health issues (IBS-like symptoms, heavy terrifying periods, awful anxiety, insomnia..) Well, anyhow.. what I'm trying to say is you seem like the same type of person as me and you want to control what you do to become healthy. We want to control the process, because doctors have made us feel crazy and often times very stupid. They have me at least. I finally gathered the courage to look up a naturopathic doctor and that was only a few months ago. I now have a diagnosis and she's almost certain my throat issue (bad breath, bad taste..) is due to my dysbiosis. I had a food panel done showing I have several random food sensitivities (beef, eggs, dairy..) all foods that gave her the conclusion that I could very well have gut dysbiosis. Now what caught my attention to even say anything is that you noticed the bad breath had gone away when you took antibiotics. Well, a month or so before I finally gave in and saw my doctor, I had formed a strange pocket on my gum. I was told it could possibly be due to food getting stuck in my gum and it got inflamed. Well, they had me taking an oral antibiotic mouthwash and within days I couldn't smell my breath! I woke up and didn't want to run to the bathroom to rinse out my mouth! My son stopped telling me my breath smelled and the horrid taste I've been dealing with for years was gone! About a week after I stopped the oral antibiotic rinse my awful breath returned. AND on top of it, I started having really bad IBS symptoms. There was someone that posted in here that mentioned it had nothing to do with your actual throat or tonsil stones. I agree! Like they said, you need to focus on what's going on in your intestines. I really advise getting a stool test and a food sensitivity test (the blood test is more accurate) and see what's going on inside of you. I've been diagnosed with tonsil stones by an ENT and one wanted to just rip my tonsils out without ever giving me an answer to what he thought I had! And believe me, I ALMOST went ahead with the surgery until I saw my new doctor. She's having me take probiotics (always start small so you don't get too sick, when the bad bacteria dies it releases 10+ toxins into your body making you feel worse!) but you can't stop!! Otherwise you'll never heal and become balanced again. Taking antibiotics may take the smell away but it's doing very nasty things to your insides and carelessly taking antibiotics will result in an imbalanced gut which will eventually cause disease something much worse than bad breath. Now believe me.. it's hard for me to even grasp that. My marriage is tense because I am always keeping my distance. I always have gum in my mouth while in public. It's truly a nightmare. I will be going on antimicrobials soon and I will be taking an enzyme as well. Moneygun (that's the user I mentioned earlier) is correct in what they say! Sugar, carbs.. it all feeds the bad guys and antibiotics do as well! I will keep you posted on how things go while I take the antimicrobials, but from all the research and experiments I've done on myself it's done nothing but make me worse. The best thing you can do is find yourself a great naturopathic doctor and you'll soon realize and learn what your body is really trying to tell you. I really hope this helps me as I've become a hermit and it's very depressing. Hope you and I both can get this fixed because all of it is just so frustrating and humiliating!

Hi, yes I was diagnosed end of September with Dysbiosis. You will have to ask your doctor for a stool test to see what type of bacteria is in your gut. This will tell you if you have Dysbiosis or not. In the little amount of time I've been taking probiotics, I find gargling with them helps immensely with the awful taste and horrible breath. It's not gone completely as of yet, but it's not near as bad. Still working to kill off the bad guys but I've read many people say it cured their bad breath. Another cuprit of bad breath is gallbladder dysfunction which can go years without having any uncomfortable symptoms. You would need to get an ultrasound among many other tests to see if your gallbladder is functioning properly.

Do you mind if i ask for ur odor type? I read up that a gallbladder odor could be a distinct type, which I have. Does it come from ur mouth or nose as well?
Plese keep in touch. Im having more tests coming up soon and will be back to report whenever.

So i'm 16 and I live in Canada. I've had BB since I was 12. I have the same symptoms has everyone. (PND, dry mouth, white tongue, etc) But I discovered that I don't have any tonsils, my doctor said that I was born without them.
Many suggest that BB is cause by tonsil stones, but I don't have them so what could be another cause?
Also, my dad has really bad BB could this mean that halitosis or maybe what causes it, can be hereditary or contagious in some way?
(My first langage is french so please don't judge my english)
This forum has been very helpful please continue to use it!

After having suffered for 3 years ive learnt alot.
First u need to identify if the odor is coming from ur nose or just mouth or both.
It helps to narrow things down and find a cure.

Hi!
About a month ago I mentioned I was diagnosed with overgrowth of bacteria in the gut, which I thought was the reason to my halitosis. However, after doing a whole month of antibiotics, my bad breath came back. I am now seeing an infectious disease doctor who will test me for parasites, because both of us believe that that is the underlying issue. HOWEVER, while waiting for this test I decided to make my own mouthwash, with the hopes this will help and IT DID. Now, I suffer from SEVERE halitosis, to the point it can be smelled several feet away and this did the trick. Although, it might not be fixing the underlying issue, it is definitely killing the bad bacteria that is causing the bad breath. This is what I did:
I boiled water and once boiled I added salt, but not just any salt, I used Himalayan salt, about a tablespoon of it (for those of you who don't know about it, do research on it, this is stuff is an amazing alternative to overly proccessed table salt and its high content in minerals make it very beneficial to our health). I used the actual crystal rocks and I stirred it in boiled water until it dissolved (used about 1 cup of water: 8 ounces). Once disolved and cooled, I moved it to a 10 ounce container. To fill the rest of the container, I used 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, so 2 ounces or 1/4 of a cup. (In other words, 75% salt solution and 25% Hydrogen Peroxide). For those of you who are uneasy about this, hydrogen peroxide is safe to gargle as long as it is diluded with water and NOT swallowed. I gargled the solution for about 15 seconds (I made sure the solution got to the very back of my throat), spat it out and used some more to swish in my mouth for 30 seconds. I did this in the morning and before bed and the next morning my bad breath was gone and better yet, my breath was fresh the entire day! I noticed my bad breath slightly coming back very late at night so I repeated it and boom! It went away again for the next 24 hours. This stuff is so great at killing bacteria that tonight, I felt a cold coming on and sore throat with it so I gargled some more of the solution for 15 seconds and boom! the pain went away immediately. Also, make sure you shake the mix before every use, because you will notice the salt sitting at the bottom. Another thing, if you are not a big fan of the taste, I recommed adding a drop or two of peppermint oil (make sure the oil reads: Mentha x piperita as the ingredient, otherwise it is not real peppermint oil, just an immitation).
I suggest you guys try this! After all, it is really cheap to make and it will not take you longer than 15 minutes! I am sharing this because I know the frustration that comes with having chronic bad breath and if it worked on me then I know it will - at least - work on some of you, but you'll never know until you try! Best of luck!! I'm here if you have any questions!

I used to try this over and over the past 4 years and it just gives me a sore throat after using it constantly. I found out Peroxide is actually not good for your health, dries out your throat even more and with salt being very drying to the mouth as well it'll only make matters worse for those with bad breath. Of course, if you do try it out and it works for you that is great news. It just didn't work for me unfortunately.
