Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

    Hi mike666,

You said your BB was coming from your mouth or tonsils. I suspect it also came from your throat and your nasal drainage. The white coating in your toungue is called thrush cause by yeast overgrowth. AVoid all kinds of SUGAR, CHEESE, DAIRY, ALCOHOL, COFFEE, WHEAT, and limit your grains intake. Get tested for H. pylori bacteria as it causes severe halitosis if you have gastritis or ulcer. Cleanse your nasal drainage regularly using Apple Cider Vinegar with sea salt. If you have sinus infections and tonsil stones it's because the bacteria resides in the tonsil crypts and at the back of your throat. You need to cleanse it daily and regularly. Some people took 6 months to 1 year before they get good result or depending on how severe their symptoms are. Remember, there is no 1 night meracle cure for severe halitosis. You have to be patient and listen to your body as well as your gut. Read articles about GAPS diet and paleo. Also, prolong intake of antibiotics is not a good idea as it can damage your kidneys. Try natural antibiotic herbal supplements it has no side effects if taken long term. Check your Ph balance, if you have low stomach acid bad bacteria will increase in numbers especially if you have taken antibiotics regularly. Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (organic) 1 tbsp. with warm water 1-3 times a day will keep your body ph in balance. Have you tried FOOD GRADE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (3%) It is lethal for anaerobic bacteria. Dilute 3% HP in room temperature water then use it for gargle. Do not use commercial mouthwashes. You can also use it as nasal spray diluted in water. Hope this helps! smile

Here is what I did to cure the BB.

everyone is different but this worked for me.

I have included a photo of what I use.

    I bought a waterpik

    Nasal irrigator syringe

    Small Tonsil Irrigator syringe

    Floss

    Tongue Scraper

    Dental Light

Dental Probe (Important if live in UK)

Saline - 2 parts baking soda 1 part salt

    Oral B Electric Toothbrush

    plaque remover

    grapefruit seed extract

Here is what I found out.

I find that UK dentists want you in and out and sometimes miss cavities.

So I bought a probe which  used to find every cavity before going to the dentist.

This helped tremendously because you could have cavities without knowing and trust me they stink.

So get all your teeth sorted first.

Use the waterpik to blast out the tonsil stones. I found that the stones were not forming in the tonsils but in the Lingual Tonsils and then at night my actual tonsils were collecting these little buggers.

Post Nasal Drip and my acid reflux were causing my tongue to get coated (This was the Key) you need to clean twice per day the Lingual Tonsils at the very back of the tongue. If you stick your tongue out as far as you can then take your middle finger and press down on the tongue or even use a spoon. This will reveal the lingual tonsils. It was coated like hell and it was really smelly. This is where the BB was coming from and with most cases on here.

Floss your teeth daily and smell it. If it smells then you can eliminate that.

Use the little tonsil irrigator syring and blast the tonsils once per day

Irrigate your nasal passages with the big syringe once per day.

I fill a cup with warm distilled water from the kettle and half a teaspoon of saline and also add 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract. This helped a lot

Use the tongue scraper and I put a few drops of GSE on it. Now the key is to clean away all the bacteria especially at the very back over the Lingual Tonsils.

Then I clean my teeth with the electric.

You can also use the mirror to see whats going on at the back

After doing all of this my tonsil stones stopped and bad breath gone.

The main things for me what were causing BB was

    Clean Lingual Tonsils

Nasal Flush with saline and GSE

But the big TWO FOR ME was KEEP THE TONGUE CLEAN

Probing for CAVITIES so the dentist knows where to look and FLOSSiNG

I have not had a single stone and no more BAD BREATH

    Hope this helps.

If you need any advice then please feel free.

Excellent and super thorough!  But isn't a sabertoothed tiger far more likely to investigate your cave now that it smells more appetizing?  Humans evolved to be awfully smelly.  But if you insist on being pleasant smelling, well just go right ahead.  Skunkman is going to be dissappointed in you!

    hi Mike

I remember when I first joined this forum- desperate and to be quite honest even suicidal. I had lost all hope and I was crying my breath to sleep every night from the torture that us ppl with bad breath go to everyday.

I want to take this opportunity to thank God for introducing the Internet and Mike666 to my life because after 6 years I have met 'my enemy'.

those who follow me know that I had an appointment for an endoscopy, I did go for it and....drumroll.....I tested Positive for something they call H pylori which is what was causing the bad breath. All the time I have been having bad bad post nasal drip and I was thinking I have sinusitis but no, I have been having H.pylori all my life and I didn't know. many people aren't aware that the sinus drainage is connected to the digestive system and my sinuses where infected by the H pylori- makes a lot of sense I must say.

After receiving the 'good' news the doctor prescribed me a quadruple therapy which is the medication I'm taking to eradicate the H pylori 1. amoxilin 2. metronidazole (rings a bell) 3.PPI for balancing acids in the stomach.

but all u guys are waiting for a success story...... YES the bad breath is being destroyed I can feel it, and I can smell the improvement

Those who follow me know that I had an appointment for an endoscopy, I did go for it and....drumroll.....I tested Positive for something they call H pylori (famous word in this forum) which is what was causing the bad breath.

I will update you guys at the end of my medication if the bad breath is gone. for now go get tested for Hpylori!!! research it!!! to the people who tell others to floss till u bleed, to gargle with baby shampoo, to eat lots of yogurt please stop it. Halitosis is a serious illness not yet given the attention it deserves because it's not suffered by the majority but it is a serious sickness! it's an alarm telling you you're sick and you need medical help not a bloody tongue scraper, I'll give u a long list of people with horrible oral hygiene but have baby fresh breath.

I'm so happy for myself, 6 years guys...6 years my life on pause, now I can press the resume button. thanks Mike666, i hope you find your good breath aswel.

aww... ;( same situation and emotion here brandon....am very happy for you.and thank you so much for sharing..i also believe it is bacteria but everytime i go to doctor instead of trying other tests to detect the bacteria  othere than blood test, they will just prescribe ppi. even they know that  i am having the symptoms of bacteria(hpylori) maybe, as they said it is the only bacteria that can survive in the stomach... sad

im so sad i wish i can find a dr that will suggest for new test of bacteria sad i was just planning to go for natural/herbal method of killing bacteria...

btw, did you undergone encoscopy with biopsy?

anyway, thanks again, now i can fully focus on one thing

and please update us again once you are fully recovered if how long you will be on antibiotics....GOD BLESS

      Hey Apple

Don't lose hope, go see another doctor that are willing to help. What I'm doing now is checking from top to bottom. ENT then chest then digestion system. Don't mix it up focus on 1 at a time fix and rule put any of the problem causing the bad breath.

I have my tonsil removed 3 years ago and thought my bad breath was resolved. My next ent visit will try to get them to check my

Adenoids, sinus and other parts that might cause bad breath.

    • Posted

yes i will..by the way how many years you are suffering from BB?

      have you undergo hpylori test?

    • Posted

I had it for about 7 to 8 years. My GP is not very helpful he said he has done everything but couldn't find where the problem comes from. I saw him recently and he has no more ideas...

So I need to find out all possiblity by myself and switching to a different doctor that might be able to help. I had hpylori tested positive before and was cure but they can reinfect at any given time.

My bad breath is getting worse this couple of years.

My next step is to check from top to bottom it will cost me a lot of money but it needs to be done otherwise I'm getting no where in my life...

    • Posted

i see...thats usually the case that doctors gave up as they cant find out the cause of it! but most people here say it is hpylori and i think there is a proper diet for that to totally get rid of it...but my issue is i am not positive to any kind of disease....sad to say my surgeon and one family doctor told me that it may be a psychological disorder that causes BB (includes poor hygene, stress etc) sad

i only have silent reflux right now compared before that it was really worst but my BB gets worst and worst ;(

      Hi,

I was wondering if you could describe your breath odor. Mine is like fart/fecal/garbage/sewage... And I'm looking into TMAU. Will be working to convince my GP to send me for a test.

    • Posted

it smells like fart/fecal and i can smell it sometimes the one from nasal(BB).and whenever i eat sweet,it causes severe reflux and increases the smell aswell! so im avoiding sweet! but still had BB.what i am experiencing right now is as if there is something clogging at the back of my throat(maybe acid trying to go up) and causes my mouth and nostril so dry(maybe i can also try that nasal irrigator for that like what others did)-have to visit ent for further advices for this!

what is TMAU by the way?

    • Posted

That's exactly the same thing as mine. Like there's a lump or something stucked on my throat. Do have excessive gas, bloating, constipation and indigestion? Because I have, i also have mild acid reflux, stuffy or congested nose and post nasal drip. Had my tonsils removed 4 years ago. About TMAU, i have just read about it online. It's otherwise known as fishy odor syndrome, but sufferers can also have fecal/garbage like odor. Please try to read about it online. I hope we could find a cure for our fecal odor. It had really affected my life so much.

yes thats it.it was traced to one of my tests that my stomach has so much gasses which makes me burf and fart.before i also suffered constipation but now i think not anymore, and yes bloating as well.i had this for almost three years now..it is still short compared to others so maybe thats why im not having any issue with other parts yet but i now have gum abscess(i dont know if theres connection).

im trying restricting myself from taking food...im trying naturaland herbal step by step..will see if theres changes...as i cant just wait and rely from doctors,i have to look and try other way too..

please update me always from your side wink

      Hi meg

I don't really know because people are honest with my breath and I'm too embarrassed to ask and when I ask my doctor he don't admit I have breath bad and you see him cough and pick he's noise etc. My hygienist think the smell could be from the stomach and my dentiest with the Halimeter test think it's from the sinus...

      Hi Abike

I think you should see a family doctor first and see if they can refer you to an ENT and gastroenterology specialist.

      Hi kevin,

Same thing happens to me, my doctor told me he couldn't smell anything from me... Yet acts as if he wanted to throw up, coughs and the usual nose crinkling. But I'm still glad because he gave me a referral to get tested for TMAU. In my case, I am suspecting my smell could be coming from my nose or mouth.. But I guess it only comes and goes.

I hate to say this, but I'm wishing that those people who were cruel to my condition will experience the same thing. My only point is I want them to know how it feels.

I have gone to see the ENT doctor , he said I am ok and he can't smell any foul smell
