bad reflux with 80mg omeprazole

Hi im all new to this site but am finding the discussions very useful i have had reflux for about 5 years now and was on 20 mg omeprazole and over the last few years it was increased to 40 mg as still getting symptoms. I have had 2 endoscopys the first showed a high amount of acid so was told to just continue with medicine and include metroclopramide for the sickness side effects. After about a year of still having problems i was sent for my second endoscopy which my larynx closed up as soon as they tried putting the tube into my throat ( i was sedated at time) . They have now put me on 80mg of omeprazole but the last 6-8 months the symptoms have returned and i am also getting raised itchy rashes from my wrists/arms to my ankles. I feel sick quite a lot of the time and my bowel movements are awful(loose). This is making me very anxious all the time thinking something else is going on and just wondered if anyone is having these sorts of problems? Im due to see the consultant again next month but not sure what else can be done as theres no way im having another endoscopy.

The reason I ask is bc your symptoms took me back to the hell of a life I was living with over 50 symptoms over the course of 40 yrs. I even had heart palpitations, chronic hives & many body aches & cramps. Low iron was the biggest clue. It's not something the medical community is fully up on so Drs often diagnose the many symptoms... Sorta like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound. There is a blood test the Dr can order for it.
Just a thought.

Have you tried a different PPI
beside omeprazole(Prilosec).
There are a bunch of meds
like Prilosec. There is Prevacid
Nexium. U can also take a H2
blocker like Pepcid or Zantac
with the PPI they are taken
60 mins before meals and at
bedtime. Do not take them at the
same time. The other medication
you are suppose to take
is also called Flagyl it is an antibiotic. Did they test u for Hpylori which is the bacteria that causes ulcer Gerd Reflux. The treatment for hpylori is usually taking 2 different antibiotics and Pepto Bismul. I was a endoscopy nurse for 20 years. Ulcers are only caused by this bacteria or anti-inflammatories. Stress spicy foods etoh do not cause ulcers they make existing ulcers worse. Caffeine ETOH Smoking Citric Fruits make acid redux worse. If I get a bad attack I put a little baking soda in water and
drink it. It neutralizes the Acid. Do not do this baking soda has a lot of salt but it helps the burning. I hope this helps.

I can't stand it! Calling my dr to see what else we can do tomorrow! I read about some surgery they can do! Right now I feel like I want to cut out the part right under my breast bone!!!!!!!

Sandra,
Taking excess amounts of omeprazole or any proton pump inhibitor can cause clostridium difficile in people, which is probably why you have the loose bowel movements. I have the same problems as you. They believe now that they may cause Dementia in older people also. I also have severe leg cramps at night which is another symptom of PPI's (Omeprazole). The rashes you speak of could also be caused by the medicine. PPI's cause wounds to heal slower I think it said and the amount you are taking might cause those rashes. You need to read about the side effects of these family of drugs. The sad part is we have to have them. I have end stage Achalasia and I have to have it for the GERD!!!

Hello, I have acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. I've been taking Omeprazole 40mg for about a year, and I hate it. At first it worked good, but then I started having stomach/colon issues and I got to the point where I dreaded taking it. I am now trying to get off it. I tried stopping it for 3 days, but the 3rd day was bad. I tried antacids to offset it, but they weren't very helpful. I now am trying Famotidine 20Mg that my old doctor gave me, and I'm hoping that will work. I have been researching PPI's and I told my doctor, but he insists that taking a PPI will help keep me from getting esophageal cancer, but I could have osteoporosis, which he thinks is the lesser evil? Please let me know how you made out, I realize your post was 4 years ago.
