Band, Bypass or Sleeve

Posted , 7 users are following.

i had my appointment with the bariatric nurse and dietician last Thursday and after much consideration I had decided that Bypass would be the best way forward. I had previously had a band fitted in 2011 and it slipped so I had to have it removed. I have put back on the 6.5 stone I lost and an additional 2 stone so I had decided that Bypass was the most permanent solution but the nurse has asked me to go away and think about it as a band is just as successful as long term weight loss.

i would welcome any help on coming to a final decision. Thanks in advance.

Ive only had a band since Jan this year.

Having a nightmare. Port has flipped and suspicions band may have burst.

Knowing what i know now, i wish with all my heart id had a sleeve or bypass. My consultant even told me the sleeve and bypass were more successful and he recommends bypass overall.

I certainly wouldnt have another band!

Bet the nurse has never gone through the whole food getting stuck, being sick, or on the other scale no restriction at all!

I know others love their band. Just not for me.

Good luck with your journey. Would love to know what you decide ☺️

Hi I don't know if you are having your op with the nhs or privately . Maybe you could help me . How did you research to know the correct place and professionals to do your op. I went to my gp but didn't get the answer or help I wanted . Thank you and wish you well .

Hi Margaret - I sympathise with you as I know how hard it is to have a band - that is what is putting me off. I am 90% sure I want a bypass as I see it as a permanent solution to my weight problem as I need to know that it won't slip or have to have it filled. Can you not go back to your consultant as it doesn't sound like it has been successful. My band operation was private and the lack of aftercare was the reason it slipped I think. I am NHS this time as I have other health concerns but was asked what I would prefer.

Im private too. Got xray on thurs to see whats going on. Once theyve e got your money your near enough on your own and i agree the aftercare is terrible!

Ive only got 3 stone to lose, as lost 2 stine preop. But still wish id had permanent surgery.

Totally agree Margaret once they have your money the aftercare is awful - I wanted them to move the band back into place but it was damaged and that was it! Hopefully you can get yours rectified and lose that remaining 2 stone - good luck!

Hi I'm still researching about it but how did u find the hospital or clinic you are having your op done . Maybe you could give me some info on how to start . I don't want to just look online nd go to any clinic if you know what I mean . I went to my gp but he didn't help much . Thank you !

SP500 it depends where you are in the country - I did a lot of research before the band but it still slipped - maybe there is a local weight support group (there is one in Oxford called OBBO) who can help - if you have a bariatric centre near you they will be able to advise - good luck

Hi Dizzypanda, I had the bypass in November 2014, (NHS) and have had fantastic after care and support. I was told that NHS in my area don't do as many bands as the success rate wasn't so good long term. My advice would be to do your research and ask about after care. I know with the bypass on NHS I have been toldI will be monitored for life. I hope this is of some help, good luck x

Thanks Leonora - that is really helpful - like I said I had made my mind up mostly but would just be interested in the pros and cons. That is good news about the aftercare which is what I am worried about. Great that it has worked so hard for you 😀

Hi, I'm currently going through the process of making the decision of which method to opt for. I initially went to the doctor to ask for a band, after a long time carrying out fitness courses, food and nutrition courses, seeing physiotherapists etc i finally got to see the team at luton this January. I went back again in April and at that point decided I wanted the bypass, however since coming away and doing even more research I feel the sleeve is going to be best for me. Luton (NHS) won't even consider fitting a band due to the complications etc. The reason I have opted for the sleeve is I only need help with my portion control, I eat a very healthy diet, just too much! I'm currently on the LCLD and have had nothing but milk and cups of tea and coffee with the odd sugar free jelly (yuk!) for just over 5 weeks. I am attending the clinic again this Tuesday so hopefully will find out if I have a date for the operation. I'm glad I have been given more time to think it over or else I would have just opted for the bypass and maybe regretted it. You have to look at all the options and decide which is best for you personally. Good luck smile

Thank you Beano - I totally see why you would opt for the sleeve and not bypass and thank you for pointing out the reason why - these are the sort of thought provoking ideas that I need 😀

Hi, I wasnt sure which to go for, but I had the bypass in December. Best decision I have ever made.  I have lost 4 stone and feel amazing.  I eat small meals and feel satisfied after each, but you still need to make healthy choices its only a tool as you know.  Good Luck in making your decision x

Thank you T1nker8ell - I really am leaning towards the bypass rather than the band - great to know it has worked out for you. 😀
