Beer/Wine/spirit Time

twenty five years ago I worked nights in a hospital, had three kids under five, was doing a degree as a mature student, taking my mother in law for daily radiotherapy, and looking after my own mum.

I didn't work every night and my body clock was wrecked. I'd come back from work at 6am and think nothing of having a large vodka tonic whilst making breakfast. My excuse to myself was its no different to someone coming home at night and destressing with a drink.

id then walk kids to school, take mil to hospital, go to uni three times a week for a few hours, another  vodka after school pick up, and wine with meal if not working that night.

What I'm really trying to find out is why we look upon drinking in the morning as being desparate. Not now, but years ago if I wanted a drink in the morning I'd have one or two then nothing for the rest of the day.

It amazes me when I read posts on here about people who go all day and start drinking at 8pm and down a couple of bottles of wine. Some start at lunchtime, others 6pm. If I was one a binge time was immaterial. This was after I gave up my night job.

How many on the forum drink in the morning? or drink during the night? I often hear the phrase 'soon be wine time'

Airport drinking is another anomaly. I always book early morning flights and my holiday begins at the airport. My poor husband always looks mortified asking for prosecco at 5/6 am. I have usually 3 glasses, nothing on the plane and a drink with dinner.

I get ready night before we travel, don't go to bed and leave home about 2.30am so am ready for a drink.

I do apologise for this peculiar topic and for rambling on. Regulars here know I suffer really badly with insomnia, this will be my fourth night without sleep. I went to bed at 10.00pm, wide awake at midnight, so will try again when finished this boring discussion.

Sorry but I can only write so much before my message disappears. Think paper fairy had the same problem.

Over the years, I filled in numerous drink questionnaires, but the one that stands out is 'do you ever drink in the morning' well if you've worked nights, it's no different than saying 'do you ever drink in the evening'

I've done now, sorry for those who read all that. I can assure you this not a drunken post, but just filling in time

It's all the same wether you drink at night or in the morning. If it's quote after work. I only see a big issue here if you are working the night shift and drink early in the day. Then have kids to take somewhere. Or to go to appointments etc. then that is a problem. Either way drinking in excess is always bad. If you have people depending on you.

I agree, when you have done a night shift, drinking in the morning is no issue. And research has shown that in airport lounges, people are far more happy to drink early in the mornings than they would be usually.

I think people see drinking in the mornng as an issue for two reasons. One, it could be that you are alcohol dependant and *need* a drink as soon as you get up. And Two, people may believe that those who start drinking in the morning won't stop for the rest of the day.

In the grand scheme of things, when you drink doesn't really matter. What matters is how much you drink, how often, and why you are drinking. Only the individual can say if they have a problem or not. If they don't... then it is no issue. smile

I think the timing is irrelevant.  It is the need and the compulsion..... whenever, whatever, that is the problem.

I am feeling great hate for alcohol, at the moment. Work that one out !

My hubby comes home from nightshift and drinks and he says it's the end if his working day.But when he's off he will wake up at say 6 in the evening and open a bottle of wine.

And when we I was at my worst I would start drinking in the morning.

Thank god I am 40 days AF!

Hey that's great to know, well done. Were you taking baclofen at one time? You must be very pleased

Yes and I've gone back to it and that's why I have no desire to drink

The question has basically been answered. If on night shift, your day gets swapped around. The question is aimed at day people, because if you drinkin the morning, you are either alcohol dependent (you need alcohol in your system to function) or you are going that way. It's basically a sign that alcohol hasn't gotten a hold on you.

There is a very good reason for the old tradtional navy saying, Is the sun over the yardarm, meaning that it was approximately noon, and the first drink of the day could be taken.

Oh, and back in the mid '80s when I was a despatch rider in London, it was quite entertaining to see people staggering out of pubs at 7:00am in the morning, around Smithfield Meat Market, because the pubs would open early morning to cater for the market traders who all worked nights.

I worked just up the road in the early 90's in Hatton garden.Oh the good old days before alcohol really took a hold!

after a heavy nights drinking years ago, I would have two large vodka and Tonics to get me going or to function, but then nothing until the next weekend. I never needed anymore during the day

I start drinking vodka 9-10 pm but half a bottle later I am falling asleep, without drink I don't sleep at tall.Got a fright last night, kept having to take a deep breath, felt panicky, and hardly slept, still taking a lot of deep breaths,my wake up call,is it the amount of vodka in such a short time?

I've felt panicky like that once, in fact I thought I was having a heart attack or something like that. Lay awake all night as I thought I might die! Was in my twenties on a hen do in Poland and we were all absolutely wasted on very very strong polish vodka. Frightening that six of us the next morning couldn't remember anything at all after the first bar. The clue was in the empty vodka bottles. My son whose a dr often used to say I'd blacked out and a large amount of alcohol, particularly spirits taken in a short space of time affects your breathing.

ive now had four consecutive nights without any sleep at all. I admit at 3am this morning I was very tempted by the sight of my husbands 60 year old malt which he'd so thoughtfully left on the table in his study!! It was the first thing I saw when I opened the door. I know that if I wasn't on campral I'd probably have helped myself

Go out and take a long walk in the fresh air and get yourself naturally tired, so that your body will want to switch off at night.

I've spent this morning teaching my 5 year old grandson to ride his new bike without stabilisers! God knows how many times I've run up and down the road. First aid box has been used a lot! Another incentive not to drink as he can now ride it completely unaided. I'm well chuffed ????????

been to to the gym this afternoon, then swimming 100 lengths and boot camp at 7pm. Oh and jogging at 6am. If that doesn't work then any other suggestions greatly received!!
