Bending down activities

I am 2 months away from a full hip replacement. I am trying to

complete the physical jobs at home (currently re-pointing my

patio) because I am worried that I will not be able to bend down

to do similar jobs in the future! Is this true? Is there anyone out

there post op who is managing to continue doing the same

physical jobs as they did pre op?

Also are you loaned out a raised toilet seat or do you have buy

one yourself?

I would really appreciate any advice anyone could give about

these issues

    Hi david,

You will not be able to do the bending straight away but in time you should be as good as new.

You are wise to get these jobs done now so that you will have plenty of time to recover before they need sorting out again.biggrin

You cannot bend more than 90degreesĀ  for quite a while after the op and even then you need to be careful.

    Best wishes

Thank you Shirley. Do I need to buy a raised toilet seat? I must admit I am not looking forward to the few days in hospital.

Until recently I would be out running (am now cycling) so I

hope to be active sooner rather than later!

      Hi david

You will do well. Know why? You have the right attitude.

Kee p your chin up and keep cycling ( but you won't be able to for a bit)

    Hi David,

I am also pre op and you will get all the info you need here. I will be interested to read the answers too!

I can help with this though. You are given a raised toilet seat on prescription. No charge.

I was given mine after my pre op assessing and joint school. Crutches, toilet seat, toilet stand all given free.

I was told that after the op I would also be given other things to take home like a commode if you toilet is on a different floor to your bedroom. They will assess you post op and you will be given everything you need. Hope this helps.

Thank you David. I have a feeling our ops will be about the same time! Good luck with yours too!

      Hi Lyn and David.

Good luck for your ops in two months time, and speedy recovery.

You will be loaned raised toilet seats, crutches, and if your furniture is too low they will give you raisers to raise your bed and seats, also if you have a bath you can get a bath seat too, all of this will be sorted out at your pre op assessments

Where are you Marilyn because the NHS don't loan toilet seats or stands because it costs more to recycle them in terms of remaining bacteria than it does to give them.

All my aids were given free on prescription.

I am in Cromer Norfolk and I received everything for free before I came home such as raised toilet seat and frame, I am lucky because I am going into spire again and my op will be done on the nhs

Some people love to moan about the NHS. But I have been so impressed by the service and information I have received. Not to mention free crutches, toilet seats and whatever other aids they deem we need! I consider us lucky to have the NHS!

My items were on loan from a company allied to the NHS. They delivered what was decided I needed at the joint school. Raised loo seat etc were covered and certificates to show they had been sterilised. Company took them back when I no longer needed them

That sounds very efficient. When I asked what they wanted me to do with them when I had finished they told me to throw them!

I am going to find a way to make sure they go to someone who needs them!
