Best footwear after TKR?

Posted , 24 users are following.

Hi everyone.

im due to have a TKR in 3 weeks and I have to get some new footwear as I have a lot of slip one which I don't think are suitable.  What's the best to get - any recommendations would be appreciated.  Also clothing - are jogging bottoms ok or something looser?

Oh and on the question of jogging bottoms, make sure they are wide at the ankle. . you will probably want to be able to pull them up above your knee easily, for massaging, etc. . . I found one of my jogging bottoms, although it seemed nice and loose, was actually too narrow and wouldnt go abovbe the knee easily!

good point, I had elephant leg and  stuff I thought would roll up over the knee easily were hopeless, big and baggy is the way forward, make sure    they are not too long though as they can easily get caught in a crutch I had a near miss and now wear mine tucked into my socks !  I guess you could spot a tkr individual by their style !

Jogging bottoms are definitely the new black !

Soft leggings I find comfy now that my knee has gone down slightly (still fat but I can't see it !!!)

I have a pressure sore under my heel so wear a padded dressing, one sock and either leggings or a soft material skirt for work with flat canvas shoes I bet you are all well jel although I bought a pair of wedge heel sanders for when I can get this foot into them

Around the house joggers, pjs, memory foam slippers one with the back cut out ! All about comfort although I may try a pair of sketchers that many if you have mentioned

I don't think you will regret getting sketchers, stretchy, no laces, so comfortable and look good.  Couldn't walk around in Velcro sandals myself or Velcro trainers.   The laces on sketchers I have just stretch and ro easy to ge on and off.

they sound like a great idea. . none over here in Tenerife though!  I didn't think about things like this before the op . . head in the sand I'm afraid . . so it was lucky I had some shoes which were too biig for me, and fairly easy to get on!  I certainly wouldn't feel happy in sandals. . prefer a bit more support.

I agree you need the support after the op.  Mine are breathable too.  Not the cheapest of shoes but they do the job.  PT was impressed!

Susan - thanks so much for asking this question. I'm 4 weeks pre TKR and hadnt thought about footwear. I'm off to my nearest Skechers outlet tomorrow and will also check out joggers, which I've never worn.  I have silk pyjamas!

Gail, silk pjs although very nice can be hot.  I found cropped cotton pjs also a godsend.  You can reach your scar easily and if you get the right ones they double up as nice leisurewear when you dont feel like dressing.  Also on the sketchers they are a little wider than other shies.

I wore crocs. .they are all I could get my foot into at the beginning as it's not only the knee that swells. They are wide, have back strap and are easy to get on and off x

I'm also in South yorks and I've just ordered a pair of the fur lined crocs from ebay!  Thought they may come in handy. Going to get some sketchers too .... As I see it, a girl can't have too many pairs of shoes, TKR or no TKR!

I think you will really love them. I'm seeing some newer styles than my first pair, sorta want some new ones, but the other ones are still just fine.
