Posted , 24 users are following.

Hi everyone.

im due to have a TKR in 3 weeks and I have to get some new footwear as I have a lot of slip one which I don't think are suitable.  What's the best to get - any recommendations would be appreciated.  Also clothing - are jogging bottoms ok or something looser?

Susan, I apologize for diverting the flow of your discussion for a moment but while we're talking about clothes and shoes to wear right after the TKR, I have a question about clothing to cover a urinary catheter. Since I'll be a double and will have to have an epidural, I'm required to get a urinary catheter pre-surgery that won't be removed until sometime the day after surgery day.  Do you know if people who had catheters were allowed to wear anything -- like baggy gym shorts -- so that when they started their physio/PT, they weren't exposed by their open-in-the-back hospital gowns?

I think everone has a catheter and has the open gown. Not to worry, staff are very aware of these things and give yo protection. I have never been allowed nor have i wanted to try and get dressed. The catheter will be gone before you are ready to be up and around. You'll have so many things going on non stop that will be the least of your concerns.out i f my 11 surgeries on the leg , 8 have required the catheter.

Hi Buster. I didn't have a catheter, just lots of bedpans  frownso I don't know the answer, but I would have thought OFG is right - I wouldn't have thought they'd get you up for physio until it's out.

I was told they would remove the catheter after I could demonstrate that I could walk to the bathroom safely which makes me think I'll be doing physio first. Guess I'll find out when I get there.  Wish they hadn't delayed my surgery -- I would rather just get this done rather than keep thinking about it. Thanks for your responses and sharing your experiences!

Some of the early "therapy" is just sitting on the edge of the bed letting you leg dangle, getting blood flow going properly and just getting on you feet. Again, most of the hospital stay is in the gown as drs want easy access to the surgical area s s they need to remove drains, change bandages, check the wound etc and they dont want to take their time wating for the patient to change apparel. I was 19 when I had my appendectomy and was pretty modest. I was trying my best to get properly covered while this cute little nurse a couple of years older than me was caring for me. She sensed my embarrassment and finally whispered in my ear " don't worry, you don't have anything that I haven't seen before and probably in a larger size. " i dated her a few times after I got back on my feet.

    Just think:

    1) easy to get on without a lot of bending over for shoes

    2) soft, so the fabric doesn"t rub on your incision for pants

    3) footwear that will fit when your feet are swollen, REALLY swollen

My standard outfits since surgery on June 26th have been Danskin Capri pants, NIKE MEN'S sandals with a Velcro strip across the instep that can be loosened or tightened depending on the level of SWELLING happening that day, and also BARE FEET because I can better FEEL how I am walking. I also do most Physical Therapy in BARE FEET because I feel MUCH MORE sure-footed on the exercise bike, etc.

Crocs are my shoe of choice, and I have ones with FUR inside for when it gets colder here as well as the thong sandals I wear regularly in summer.

At 10 weeks post op from my TKR, swelling and sensitivity to touch determines what I wear.

NEVER wear uncomfortable footwear or clothing! Your body DESERVES a break after all it has endured!

    Best wishes to you!

I get my SECOND KNEE done on October 9th, so I will be CONTINUING my recovery through Christmas and into the new year as you will be!

Don't worry! You will make it!

Be patient with yourself, and let COMFY footwear and clothing help you through it!

I found Clark's slippers with great support and closed backs for after surgery and home from the hospital.  Great black suede rubber soled Sketcher low boots for casual.  I'm only a month out of surgery so have not tries croc flip flops, yet.

Luck to you.  Yoga pants are better cause they have the wider leg for the therapist to inspect your incision.  Regular days a pair of leggings work well or even capri legging.  I also a snap front denim dress from the Gap is great with tights and short boots.  You will be amazed that the nagging pain you had frefore the surgery is gone!!
