Betahistine

Would love to get advice on betahistine as a way to help with dizzy spells from Meneres. My spells are happening more and more and my ENT has not suggested betahistine at this point. Currently, when I start feeling dizzy I am supposed to take Valium as they think stress triggers it. However, now that it is happening so regularly I just don't like taking a drug like Valium so often. Any help or advice would be truly appreciated. Thank you, Greg

Good morning Greg!Do the Valium help any and how many mg do you take? I would also like to hear more about the betahistine I have seen it talked about a lot on here.

Yes, the Valium helps but it takes about an hour for them to take effect and often times it knocks me out for another hour. I have been putting my head down and listening to meditation music and this seems to work and only take about 30 minutes. I do not lay down, I sit, bend over and put my head in my hands. While this seems to work and in 30 minutes i am feeling better, my problem is that it can create some challenges at work. I need to figure out how to avoid the dizziness all together, at least during the day.

Hi Greg , I’ve been on betahistine since September don’t want to tempt fate but seem to be working very well for me, was started on 16mg x 3 a day but didn’t seem to do much but after seeing other posts on here was advised to go on 32 or 48mg x3 a day, I tried 32 but not much change so went onto 48 x3 and has really helped, a normal doctor in England will on prescribe 16x3 a day so had to get the dose upped by my ent consultant, the higher dose is recommended by German ent specialist name of prof Michael strupp who says the low dose is little more than a placebo, they do take about one month to become fully affective I hope this helps

I think you are right to be cautious of excessive use of Valium - it is basically a sedative anti anxiety drug and will not deal with the cause of Meniere's.

You are also right about betahistine, a remarkably safe drug developed specifically for the condition. The leading authority on this is Herr Prof. Dr. med. Michael Strupp who is based in Munich, Germany. His research has led to him recommending amazingly high dosage regimes which have helped many patients. In UK the max recommended dose in the BNF is 16mg tds which helped me a bit with tinnitus and hearing damage but did not stop the attacks. The dose was tripled to 48 mg tds and later to 64mg tds which stopped the vertigo and nausea completely. After 5 to 6 months free of symptoms I wean off slowly. If I think symptoms are returning I go back on previous max dose asap. You should know that betahistine takes a month to become effective.

If you are in North america it can be obtained from specialist pharmacy labs on special prescription.

    Good luck.

I live in the US and get Betahistine mailed to me from a Canadian pharmacy. I first had to get a prescription from my ent. It really helps avoiding drop attacks.
