Bilateral hip surgery

I'm finding that the bilateral THR I'm scheduled for (10/6) is not very common so it's not easy to find out what the additional challenges will be.  I have very little dialogue with Kaiser so I was wondering if there are any bilateral hippies out there who I might be able to confer with.  I'd be interested to hear some of your comments and thoughts about this approach.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I’m having bilateral hip surgery on May 1.  It’s been good to read what others who have done it have said. I’m praying it takes away the pain in my legs. They always hurt, along with my back. Grateful for others posts who’ve gone through it- I’ll be following this closely. Thank you!

I know what you mean. It is hard to sleep without the pain waking you up when you turn over. Are you saving anterior?  I will be praying for you!

Thank you Karen 21427 for your prayers!!!! It isn’t so much when I sleep, it’s all day long.  I also have been diagnosed with “some form of lupus” so a lot of the pain could be from that. I pray the hip surgery will help.

I’d actually love to talk to others who have auto immune  issues and are having or have had hip replacement

      Thank you again ❤️

Hi just wanted to wish you all the best for your op on 1st May. I went through the same bilateral just over a year ago and have a new life. The first couple of weeks are tough but keep doing your exercises daily and you will be fine. I had bone on bone pain and as soon as I woje up after the op that awful pain had gone absolutely the best thing I have done.Good luck you will be just fine. Kind Regards Ann

Thank you so much!! I love to hear success stories.  I’m curious about where pain is before THR in others who’ve had it. The pain isn’t in my exact hip spot only. It seems to be everywhere else- pain that radiates down the legs, back, groin area.i waddle when I walk!  I’ve had very little ability to do any kind of straddle for a year and a half. I’m a rider and I couldn’t get on a horse if I had to. sad.  I never thought it was my hips because of that... Thought it was sciatica.  As I told  the other gal I have high auto immune markers so just thought maybe it was that. But 4 surgeons said I needed both done, my hip joints are so bad they aren’t even round anymore. So maybe that’s causing all the pain? I don’t know, this whole thing started with a catch in my hips whenever I tried to move suddenly 3 years ago. I took a bad fall Jan 25 and it went drastically bad after that. It was so fast!

Is it important to not have any infection when you have surgery? Think I may have a UTI. Seeing my doc tomorrow.

My pain is in the hips and down the leg. My knee has been hurting I think because I am compensating. Hope this improves.

I went through the same thing.  I've always had back issues, so everyone just assumed it was my back.  10 months of PT for my back and it wasn't getting better, then all of a sudden I start getting the same pain in my other leg.  That's when they did an xray and saw that it was my hips.  Unfortunately, after all those months of limping I accelerated the decline of the "good leg" so now I don't have one.

My pain actually starts in my groin (right where your leg attaches to the torso) and runs down the front of my thigh, sometimes into my Knee.  I also aggravated my back with the way I was walking, so I was having nerve pain down the outside of my leg to just above my ankle.

My surgery is 4/24.  They are doing posterior, do you know which procedure you are getting? Posterior or Anterior?

Hi Ann.  Not sure if we've spoken before, sorry if this is a repeat.  Did you have Anterior or Posterior approach?  I'm scheduled for bi-lateral posterior on 4/25. (I can't believe it's 2 weeks from this coming Tuesday!)

      Thanks.

Hi Amy I had posterior are you having a general or sedation!!! You will be so happy after your op all that awful pain will have gone. I cannot stress enough to do your exercises every day. Good luck Amy you will be fine. Ann

Hi Ann.  I am having an epidural with sedation.  I will definitely keep up with the exercises. I was fairly active before all this started and I'm looking forward to getting back to that condition.

Thanks so much for your positive words and encouragement, they definitely settled my nerves a bit as most bi-laterals I'm hearing about were anterior.  Glad you did so well.

Good morning, Storygirl.  I hope that your surgery went well.

Just had it yesterday. It went perfectly the doc said! Ieverything is in perfect alignment. I haven’t walked yet because my surgery was late yesterday afternoon and it’s just early next morning. The only movement so far is to use  the bedside potty and the walker to get to it. Moving my legs is a bear...Whohoo.  Feels like I have no control but I think that’s what walking must be for. He said my hips were so stiff for so long that I haven’t used those muscles. Will take work 👍🏻

Only thing is My BP is super low so getting lots of fluids, & talk of a transfusion. Praying it will not have to happen! I think I’m just super dehydrated.

Thank you so much for asking!!!

Glad everything is going so well for you.  I was thinking of you and praying.  Get your rest and do your PT.  LOL  I will be thinking and praying for a speedy recovery.  Mine is 6 weeks from this coming Monday.  Sounds like you are in good spirits!
