Bilateral hip surgery

I'm finding that the bilateral THR I'm scheduled for (10/6) is not very common so it's not easy to find out what the additional challenges will be.  I have very little dialogue with Kaiser so I was wondering if there are any bilateral hippies out there who I might be able to confer with.  I'd be interested to hear some of your comments and thoughts about this approach.  Thanks in advance for your help.

You'll be feeling better and become more mobile quickly.  It's all down hill from here and you'll soon enter the pain free zone.

I had bilateral a week ago. I thought it was much more common but am finding the same thing. Hard to know how to gage progress, what to anticipate.  I’d love to hear from anyone who is further down the healing road.

I am probably not the one to talk to, had to have a sudden transfusion in the hospital and was there for 5 days. So only home 3. So far I haven’t noticed much of a difference but i think it’s too soon to tell.

Hello. Glad to hear you are doing better.  My BP was low too, but I usually take BP meds so they just held those back and eventually it came back to normal.   The worst should be behind you now.

I had my bi-lateral posterior surgery on Tues. 4/24.  All went well with the surgery except it started 3 1/2 hrs late. I can't believe it's been 3 weeks (yesterday) already.  I'm doing well and PT says I'm progressing on schedule.

They had me stand up and take a few steps less than 12 hrs after my surgery. That was probably the only "brutal" moment and I think it was because I wasn't using the pain med pump properly.  I think I was able to press it every 10 minutes and the nurse said I had only pressed it 4x in I don't know how many hrs. Literally brought me tears. So piece of advice for those who haven't had surgery yet, ask or keep pressing that button the first day. Once we got the pain meds right (shortly thereafter) it wasn't bad.  I was able to walk the stairs holding the railings a few days later and then with a forearm crutch and 1 railing the next day.

Came home on Sat. Had to sleep downstairs in my recliner because my raised toilet seat hadn't arrived yet and the downstairs one didn't fit upstairs. 2nd night home I walked up 15 steps (slowly) to my bedroom.  I was walking with 2 forearm crutches the first week and a half. (Walker just wasn't working in my house-too much furniture)Transitioned to one crutch or cane by end of week two. Have been able to walk a little with no cane in my house yesterday and today. No real "pain" since 1st week, more like muscle stiffness and soreness. A world away from the pain before surgery. Definitely tire more quickly, but that is getting better day by day.

      Wishing you a speedy recovery!

      Regards,

      Amy

      Wow you are Super Girl!

Not sure I said but I did have a transfusion and that brought hemo and BP up. Hemo still only at 7.5 so I’m taking blackstrap molasses daily. wink

I am on day 8. I was feeling much better before PT came yesterday. She had me lay down., draw one knee up foot flat on floor and straight leg raise other leg to 90drgrees. Ouch! Then she said my hamstrings were super tight so she did a deep tissue massage on back of my leg while it was in the air. I woke up with screaming pain in my knee of all places in the night. Something to do with The IT band and those muscles. And my hip started clicking again. Needless to say I was a bit discouraged this morning, and had a cry. I just talked with docs office and they said not to worry. It’s all normal and it will take a while. Told me to just  lay off PT and walk, walk, walk. So I will do that.

I have to say I’m the hospital every nurse who came in said the same thing, “Wow, you are so brave”. I began to wonder at that. I wasn’t so brave. I just thought everyone did doubles! Haha, ignorance is bliss!

I think it’s incredible you are walking alone at 3 1/2 weeks.  You are my hero.

Thanks Karen. The advice they give you about exercise beFORE surgery is great advice if you can. I walked in the pool until the pain got so bad I just had to stop.

Hope you can be keeping those muscles moving.

Are you doing anterior, posterior, superpath?? I did the superpath, also called mini posterior. Pretty small scar.

The way I see it tho there are good parts to every way.

      Praying for you!

So sorry about all the pain.  Maybe you need a different therapist. I've had in home PT for 3 weeks plus 3x/day in hospital and other than that first night, none of them had me do anything that caused pain like that. Sounds like therapist was being very aggressive.  I agree with your dr.  Walk, walk, walk. Did they give you exercises to do at the hospital?  You can google post hip replacement exercises. None of them include leg raises and you can do them on your own.

Not supergirl, lol. Maybe super determined smile

Don't get discouraged. I promise you it will get better soon. Look on the bright side, we're done!  We don't have to go back for the other one.

My colleague just had bi-lateral anterior hip replacement 6 days before my surgery and we have been comparing notes throughout our recovery.  His incision is smaller.  anterior is less invasive and you don't have to deal with the same post-op precautions.  For 6 weeks I have to sleep on my back, maintain a 90 degree angle when seated (knees below hips) which means sitting on a cushion and I can't bend over to pick things up or even put my shoes on.

He definitely seemed to progress faster, but I feel like we've evened out now. When I asked my PT she said that in her experience, after the first two weeks both anterior and posterior are at about the same place. Biggest difference is the posterior post op precautions.

I remember being 6 weeks from surgery and thinking it was so far away and then before I knew it,the day arrived.  Best of luck to you. Sending prayers and positive vibes.

Congrats to all you recent and gonna be hippies!  It's been one year today sinse by bilateral surgery.  The Best thing I ever did.  For those of you on the side, jump in.  I'll be turning 70 soon and thanks to the surgery I am completely pain free, joining my wife for long walks, surfing at least 3 mornings a week and I even went back to work.  All this thanks to THR.  I hope many many of you have a similar experience.

I am three months out from my bilateral anterior hip replacement. Feeling great. No more pain!

However, I do feel some discomfort in the motning after sleeping. But feel great after I walk around for 10 minutes!
