Bisoprolol 1.25mg

Has anyone found their heart beats hard and forcefully since being on bisoprolol?

I take 1.25mg a day.

As far as I know I have nothing wrong with my heart but put on bisoprolol as my regular non specific beta blocker (Inderal LA) was discontinued. I was put on it 8 years ago for migraine only.

I had really bad palpitations especially at night which my dr says were caused by my heart rate being too slow.   Since coming of Bisoprolol, so far, no palpitations.

      Yes, possible.

Imagine that you have a normal (your default, natural) heart rate and rhytm (whether a rhytm is perfect or you suffer from arrhytmias and palpitations), and then you start to take drugs for a heart rhytm and BP.

Those drugs will alter your natural heart rate and rhytm.

In majority of people, the effect is good and desired.

But in some people, drugs can cause strange rhytms or heart rate.

A lot of people on forums said, that for example: they had HR 90 before drugs, so they needed a drug to lower their HR. But then, after taking a drug, their HR would jump to even 150.

So, instead of lowering it, in some people it would create even bigger problems.

On the other hand, in lots of people, when a HR drops too low, heart starts to have strange pauses and strange rhytms, and you can develop a lot of palpitations, pauses, or episodes of arrhytmias which you never had before taking drugs.

So, in majority of people, a drug will create desired effects.

But in some people, totally strange things, reactions and rhytms happen.

hi there, i was on bisiprolol for 8 years up to july 2017..(2.5mg) however i was told by my doctor that it needed increasing because of ageing ect...so i went on 3.75mg..however, since ive had terrible sleep problems .and some .palpitations and slow heartbeat...even when i  dont get the forceful beats at night i cant get to sleep..its really doing me in...it seems to be a function of how late in the day i take it. ..no sleep is worst than the fast heartbeat to be honest.

      Hi Brian,

Sorry to hear you are having problems on Bisoprolol after having been on it for 8 years. I think these drugs are like that as l was on the bp tablet Amlodopine for almost nine years before l realised it was giving me unwanted side effects..i.e. palpitations, itchy skin, swollen ankles and terrible anxiety. I talked my Dr into stopping it and she upped my Canderstartin bp tablet. I still have to take the Bisoprolol for the rapid heart rate though and l hate what it does to me. I've never felt well on it for the last 10 months (the amount of time I've been on it). I just wish l could do without it or find another alternative that has NO side effects but sadly l very much doubt it. All these bbs come with their own horrible effects which pur bodies have to fight against to feel remotely normal. I too have a bad sleep pattern with vivid dreams every night and usually wake up in the early hours with my heart pounding and not able to breathe. Not a nice situation at all. Could you perhaps take the bb as late as you can? Otherwise l would go back to your Dr and ask his opinion or better still find a really helpful pharmacists to ask as they know more about these drugs effects on us than the Drs who dish them out . Good luck and hope you get sorted one way or the other. Keep us informed.

Like l said Brian, wjy don't you ask a pharmacist for their advice. Just tell him everything you've said on here and l feel sure they could five you help. I too have taken my Bisoprolol at different times of the day and so far am still not sure what is the best combination to go with. Just this morning l haven't as yet taken it as my pulse was quite low, for me. When l take the Bisoprolol it goes very low, in the 50s, and usually l feel better when it's in the 70s. So am waiting a while. What a picnic though having to do all this performance just to feel ok for the day. Let me know how you go on anyway with taking yours at 9am.

hi thanks for your reply...it seems the bisolprolol so far hasnt affected my sleep , ive reduced  the dose and taken it  at 9am and still i cant get any sleep at all...its a nightmare.. whats more i dont really feel that tired..a "sleep specialist" told me i must be falling asleep and not realising it..the so called micro sleep.. i really have to take a sleeping pill to get any sleep..so it seems ive 2 conditions now insomnia and the heart rhythym  condition...which pales into insignificance at the moment..deep down i think theres a connection between the 2..i keep you informed..

What a shame that you are still getting no sleep. That must wreak havoc with your day and your moods, nothing worse than feeling tired but unable to sleep. Do you go to bed at the same time? And do you have a routine beforehand, i.e. winding down, drinking warm milk, or similar? Sometimes our bodies have to be reprogrammed into starting again if there's been a disruption. Do you tend to get more agitated as night time approaches do you think, cos that can get you into the wrong frame of mind l would think. Is your heart rate at an acceptable level, not too fast? Because then you are in the flight or fight mode which isn't good for restful sleep, or in your case, any sleep. Good luck.

When I was put on bisoprolol 1.25 I was taking it in the morning,  because I had side effects I took it at night instead , I also found I could not get to sleep, now I take it at 12 in the afternoon, I am having strong heartbeats and pressure in my chest plus low blood pressure and heartbeat, I don,t know whether it is the Bisoprolol.

Sleep becomes very bad as we get older and sometimes if we are anxious by nature it does not help.  I try to be satisfied with 6 hours sleep. I,m retired so I can have a nap in the afternoon, maybe 20 minutes to give me a boost to survive the evening

hi..after cutting my bisolprolol by a half from 3.75 mg to 1.8 mg and taking it at 1 pm..my sleep has improved, theres no question it was affecting me, and i have a slightly higher hr, was in 40s now in 50s, and any palpitations seemed to have gone for now.. i feel better...I hope you feel better...

It might be that your heart is not beating harder, but that you are hearing it more.  I have intermittent pulsatile tinnitus which means I can hear my heartbeat often very loudly in my head - sometimes I think it is an external noise.  When I have irregular beats this makes me anxious, so I have the radio on at night now.  Whether this is brought on by the Bisoprolol which I also took for a while, now discontinued, is a guess.  I seems improbable it would actually directly affect your heartbeat.

Can anyone help me. I was put on bisporol 1.25mg for palpitations which tbh are probably caused by the change. Ive ended up in A&E twice now with the worst case of feeling like im about to die. Has anyone else had this problem ? does it get better the more you use the drug ? I've been on it 3 months now. Im suffering horrendous anxiety. Thanks Jayne

      Hi Jayne

I am having the same horrible effects you are on 1.25mg Bisoprolol. Rapid and scary heartbeat, especially waking me in the early hours nearly every day.My pulse goes as high as 140-150. I also feel like l am dying. And the anxiety and nervous feeling is frightening. Have been on them since Feb 2017 so l can't even tell you things get better. In fact it's got worse and l really hate to say this to someone who is already petrified and trying to get themselves back to the life before Bisoprolol. That is me to a tee. I want to be the person l was before. I won't even go away unless it's somewhere close to a hospital! How sad is that? It's changed my life for the worst. Yes the heartbeat slows down for a while but l can always tell when the next dosage is due. I am trying to very slowly wean off these bbs. I can't stand the intense anxiety and panic attacks much more. Am so sorry Jayne that my opinion is such a doom and gloom outlook, especially when you are suffering very similar feelings. If you can, go back to your Dr and ask him to either change to something else or ask can you wean off. Please let me know how you are going on.

      Good luck.

      Hello Jayne and Christine

Had to reply to you both as this was a picture of me about three years ago now.  I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and flutter and was put on Bisoprolol for about four months, dosage 8.  How well I remember how I felt on this drug, although I hasten to add, my husband has been taking it regularly for years without any side effects - but it is certainly not a drug which suits all.  Have to separate really these side effects from the effects of an arrhythmia.  To put it in a nutshell, Bisosprolol makes many people feel exhausted to the point of non function and totally depressed.  There are alternatives and if this is a characteristic of how you feel, then get it changed for something else as there are alternatives.

I well remember the feeling of being about to die when my heart started jumping about and I felt I could not breathe out properly - total panic and of course that makes it much worse.  I was put on a drug called Flecainide and this was a great help to me as it quietened the heart down within about an hour, so you could question this.  It really does depend on what your diagnosis is.  I had a very bad year in and out of AE and several procedures tried.  My own solution was eventually a pacemaker and AV node ablation and since then I have been as right as rain and on a minimum of medication (not Bisoprolol) and I feel as normal as I ever did before it all happened.  So there is light at the end of the tunnel in the various ways these complaints can be treated or controlled without hospital intervention, but I do know that nothing would induce me back on to Bisoprolol under any circumstances.  An arrhythmia is enough to cope with, without adding side effects from a drug which has an extra adverse effect on you.  So the advice is to visit your GP and explain how it is affecting you and ask to try an alternative.  My sympathies are with you both.

Thank you Josephine for your reply.

My diagnosis is sinus tachycardia and high. Blood pressure. Am on Losarten for that. Was on Amlodopine and had to come off that after 9 years due to other side effects. I seem to be super sensitive to most drugs so difficult to know what suits me best. Trial and error in my case, but can't say it's fun trying.

Think the panic attacks and depression plus the constantly blocked nose are the worst.

As l am slowly tapering off the Bisoprolol l think and hope l am getting there. Only last night l felt the pulse/heart rate was a little lower than usual, i.e. 1114 as opposed to136 and over.

I monitor my bp too and just today it was the lowest it's ever been.....132/73.

So maybe, just maybe l might be winning the fight! Fingers crossed.

As to yourself l am happy that all has turned out right for you and you feel well again, even though you've been through the mill to get there. Take care.

Dear Ladies, thank you for taking tge time to reply. I've been in a terrible mess. 😔 I went back to my gp and told her what was happening, she basically gave me anti depressants and diazepam to help with the anxiety. If i could have my time over again i would never have taken bisporol. My gp thinks that after a week i could wean myself off of this drug. What a laugh. Same time everyday anxiety kicks in and most days i feel like a zombie with my heart doing whatever it likes. Can't seem to feel better 😔

I am so sorry to hear you are feeling wretched at present and I think anti depressants may help to quell the anxiety which I know from experience is caused totally by enduring erratic heart behaviour which you have become increasingly aware of.  On the other hand, coming off Bisoprolol may also do the trick as it made me very lethargic and down - so you have a good chance of a lift from your present low state of mind.  Are you on blood thinners of any kind?  I take them for life and they do give me a feeling of some protection .  Many arrhythmias although distressing, are not life threatening and after all, that is what is our main fear and cause of anxiety.  So press on and see what results you get coming off Bisoprolol.  I flatly refused to take it any longer after my last hospital stay (Feb 2014) and stopped cold turkey, expecting to feel bad, but that never happened nor did I look back.  I am not a doctor, so cannot advise you to take such a decision, but in my own case, I suffered no ill effects from doing this.

Maybe it would be worth just sticking with the anti depressants and diazepam for the time being. I have just called my heart consultant and he can squeeze me in, in June 😔
