Bisoprolol

Hi All,

I have recently been prescribed Bisoprolol for a leaking mitral valve. Since starting it I have a sudden drop in pulse rate, anything from 40 - 45 and feel awful. My cardiologist does not want to stop tabs yet as I am still having tests to determine whether or not I need surgery. Anyone else have the same problems and if so how do you cope with it.

Hi Sandy, i haven't had much chest pain with my Afib but i have noticed that i do get shooting type pains from time to time. I believe this is down to getting trapped wind as a side effect of the Bisoprolol. When i reduce the trapped wind they seem to go away. Have you got irregular / fast heart beats?

Hi Yes i suffer alot from fast beats and a irregular beat, ive still no firm diagnosis.

    Sandy,

You really need to press your doctor for a diagnosis of the problem. Mine was only diagnosed as i had an Afib episode whilst out shopping with my wife. I thought it was a heart attack and called an ambulance. I was taken to hospital with an irregulare heartbeart nearing 200 beats per minute and shortness of breath. I was put on 0.75mg of Aspirin per day and Bisoprolol as it apparently lowers blood pressure and helps correct irregular beats. Go back to your GP.

    Good luck with it.

We should all try to keep in contact through this forum to.support each other.

    All the best.....Paul

Thanks Paul, hes wrote to a Cardiologist specialist in Glasgow so im hoping to get an appt soon, ican go for weeks without being aware of my heart then i feel every beat, and the racing beats scare me,my gp increased it to 5mg but now i feel my heart is too slow,i need to get to the specialist and hopefully get a answer.

When i was on 5mg my resting heart rate was around 57 to 59 and i think the feeling the heart beats is a Bisoprolol side effect (but not sure). When i went to hospital they gave me blood tests, an ECG, a chest Xray and some kind of heart Ultra sound but thats only because i was admitted in an Ambulance and spent 4 days in hospital. I have read that the Cardiologists are the best people to decide what treatment is used. I hope they get mine right soon!

    Keep your chin up......P

I have taken 2.5mg bisopropolol tablets for just over 12 months with no ill effect other than a patch of psoriasis (not diagnosed) appearing on the top of my head.

I have taken beta blockers of one sort or another for about 30 years, doctors increasing the dose because I present at the surgery with white coat syndrome and my pulse rate dropping to 24 bpm so I have just stopped taking the tablets. Not a wise decision but having experienced three severe angina attacks whilst resting that is what I did.

When put on my present medicine I expressed my concerns and was told that if my heart rate went below 50 bpm I should ring him or speak to another doctor immediately and if yours is down as low as 40bpm that may be the prudent thing to do?

I am a 57 year old male and was on 2.5mg of Bisoprolol, along with Statins, for suspected angina, although was asymtomatic, for aprox 2 years. It definitely made me more tired, very lethargic, and also reduced my libido to practically zero. The worst part about it though was the depression it seemed to cause.

I became extrwemely low, antisocial, and moody and went to some very dark places.

It was only because I ran out of Bisoprolol that I discovered what it was doing to me. For a month I didnt have any tablets, and very gradually I started to pick up. When I mentioned my low moods, depression and dark thoughts to my cardiologist, he immediately removed them from my prescription and am now only on statins.

My mood has picked up, I am less tired, and generally feel much happier with myself.

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for your info regarding Bisoprolol & what it did to you.

I haven't experienced the depression or the dark places, although at times I do get quite tearful for no apparent reason & I have had a couple of episodes when I pass out completely.

I see the cardiologist again in a few weeks & am going to ask if I can stop them, even if I need to have something else instead. Will post what the outcome is.

I would have stopped the statins. My blood pressure has been lowered and my libido restored by a daily intake of garlic. The little head now looks up at the big one again each morning!

    Hello pipesmoker,

How you doing? I just realised that you posted a reply to my message a long while ago and I never replied to you ...... sorry neutral

Have you really been better since taking garlic? I have heard other people say about garlic but no one has said they feel better when taking it.

I haven't been to the doctors for over two years and I am absolutely fine.

Yes I have, my bits now work but it's not too pleasant for my long haired mate, well you acn't have it all.

Still take my daily aspirin and Cardicor. I smoke and drink but the one thing that makes the difference is the garlic.

    Pipesmoker,

Wow, thats amazing! I would love to get back to not visiting doctors & hospitals again! Before I started getting ill last year, I rarely went, now I seem to be there frequently.

I'll see what they come up with as far as diagnosis & then give it a go. Thanks

Pipesmoker is getting positve effects from garlic as it has a chemical called allicin which reacts with red blood cells to produce hydrogen sulphide, which can help to relax blood vessels much the same way as viagra.
