Bisoprolol and hair loss?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Has anyone experienced their hair thinning whilst taking Bisoprolol? I have been on it now for getting on for 4 years and in that time have noticed that my hair is much thinner than it was, yes I am getting older and know that hair can thin as we age as well, but wondered if this drug was contributing to it, all my life I have had really thick curly hair that often I couldn't get a brush through it let alone a comb but now I can see my scalp, also it has gone straight, I mean completely straight, just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem?

Thanks.

Hi Phoebe,  Apparently, it is a side effect of Bisoprolol on the other hand it could be an underactive thyroid?  Perhaps you've already had tests for that.   Janet.

    Hi

I have heard about this side effect from a lot of people on different forums about Beta blockers on internet.

This side effect is not too common, but it happens.

Thanks, I hadn't realised it until recently, typical of me to get the side effect that isn't too common, might have to buy a wig. eek

    Hi

i to have been on the same mess for 4 years and I have lost nearly all my hair on top and still losing it. It started thinning last year. I'm so upset but no one has told me it's due to this medication not even the hospital. I am going back on the 1st November to see dermatologist and I'm going to ask. I will let you know what they say. I now believe this is why and I'm going to stop taking this medication.

go back to your Dr before it's to late hopefully yours will grow back I know mine won't sadly.

      Thanks Anit,

I will be most interested to hear what they say.

No-one told me this could happen either, I have always had really thick hair, until now.

If you are on a beta blocker and decide to come off, please please do not just come off it like your doctor will tell you to do.   I was only on Bisoprolol for 3 months and I had to come off in order to have an ablation. My doctor said it was fine to just stop.  Well it isn't.   I went through awful withdrawls.

just wanted to warn you,.  I hope you do not mind

      Hi

Have you had any luck with finding out if it is the Bisoprolol causing your hair loss?

I've been on it for 2 years now and my hair has become very thin. It's horrendous!!

Also did you get any bumpy heartbeats coming off it?

      Many thanks

      Hi

yes it is because of Bisoprolol but mine didn't get thin it went straight to bald. I was on them for 4 years!

The first week I had to have my angina spray a few times due to chest pain but I just took it easy and it wore off. I can now walk up the stairs without losing my breath. I now feel so healthy to be honest.

      Take care

Also, did you get any little bumps in your heartbeat?

Every now and then I have been getting a little bump.

I was only put on it for migraines!!!

I was on Bisoprolol for only about 3 months , and that was about  15 months ago.

My haridresser really noticed how much thinner my hair is.    She did not mention it to me for a few months, but even just last week she brought it up.   Hmmmmm

    Hi Phoebe

i have been to my GP and he told me to stop taking my Bisoprolol immediately which I have done. It is very very rare to have hair loss but that's why I have lost mine! Iv also had awful sinus problems, back problems, aching all over out of breath if I move etc and kidney stones it is all severe side affects.

I have now been off them for 3 weeks and already I feel so much better. I have passed a kidney stone I don't get out of breath I'm not aching and I feel so happy well apart from my hair loss. I have noticed my hairbrush is not full of hair after using it nor is the plug hole full of hair when I wash it. I don't know if to much damage has been done and it won't grow back time will tell. Iv still got my hospital appointment on 1st November so I will let you know what they say! The first week coming off the tablets I felt a bit rough and had a bit of chest pain but that started fading off in second week and now nothing.

please I strongly suggest you stop taking them go to your GP. Iv also had to fill in a yellow card on line which is about side affects for medications.

    take care

      Hi

i had to stop immediately due to having so many serious side affects. I did feel rough the first week but then it wore off and now I feel so good! After being on them 4 years I feel young again lol. I was on a low dosage to that's why it took four years to really lose my hair etc. I will never go back on them or anything else now. I carry my spray which i haven't needed but you never know so better to be safe than sorry.

      Take care

    Hi Phoebe

iv been to the dermatologist today and got my results which are not good! I have lupus alopecia. My hair follicles are so badley damaged my hair won't grow back. I'm still losing it in other places it's burning and very red. I have to take antibiotics for 6 months and go back. This is to try and stop the burning and it killing any more follicles. Lupus sadly iv googled and I'm to upset to speak about it. Please go to your Dr stop taking Bisoprolol and demand to see a dermatologist for your hair before it's to late. I have everything crossed for you and please let me know how you go.

Your welcome to chat to me but I am really upset that this medication can cause so much damage. Take care

      Dear Anit02

I’ve just read your post of yesterday.

I was sorry to read you are so

      upset at the moment.

I hope you will feel better soon.

I just need to ask you if it is a dermatologist that deals with hair loss or some other Dr?

I’m on a low dose of 1.25 and weaning off.

My hair was my pride and joy.... not so now!!

      Best wishes

Yes it is a dermatologist that deals with hair loss. I to was on a low does for angina.  I loved my hair and always looked after it. Some Drs go all around the houses before they will send you to one but you can tell them that you want a referral. Also don't believe in all the thickening shampoos they really don't work good luck I wish you well
