Bleeding after surgery

Posted , 7 users are following.

Looking for some reassurance. 8 days post op and I'm bleeding quite heavily from my navel. Went to a&e and they just said it's normal. No infection which is good but the other incisions barely bled at all! I'm back at work next week and really worried I'm still going to be soaking through my dressings. I'm self employed so no one will make any allowances for me. Anyone else had this problem?

I had the exact same thing. I phoned the hospital and the nurse said to leave the dressungs on although they had blood on them and to cover them with new dressings. Eventually it did stop after a few days. Hope this helps.

    Hi,

?Bleeding from the incision by the navel is not normal.  I had a complicated gallbladder removal (gangrenous) and never had any bleeding from my incisions.  Call your surgeon's office and if they won't see you, go to your regular doctor and get this checked out. It's probably something simple, but it will set your mind at ease.  One thing you must do is to get plenty of rest, and not aggravate the area around the incisions.  If you have some pull on type slacks, wear those until you're completely healed.  It takes about five weeks until you are feeling back to normal.  Don't do any exercise except walking until your doctor gives you the ok.  If you are working from home, try laying down with pillows at your back and holding your laptop on your lap.  It takes the pressure off the stomach.

Sorry to hear that, my GB was out a little over a month ago I never had

the bleeding but the last week my stomache near my belly button that they

cut go little red bumps in circles and now it is like a itchy rash. I put cortisone

cream around it but not on it. I now have three of them. I called my doctor

PA   and I am waiting to hear back. My GB was Horrible my surgeon said and also infected and gain green but I never had the bleeding. I would really check it out even if you call your own Primary Doctor. Good Luck.

Hi jo53453, I know someone who's also just had surgery through the navel and it bleed alot also and when he went back to the hospital they said it was perfectly normal. I know when I've read about the cholescystomy they say it does bleed more through the navel because the cut is bigger so as the advice previously given be careful on movement and what you wear and also for your own piece of mind go back to your own doctor as we can't tell how much you are bleeding. good luck

    Hi, Jo,

I had my gallbladder removed & didn't bleed at all.  I suggest you get in touch with your surgeon and have them check it out, if nothing more than for your own peace of mind.

Take it easy and give yourself plenty of time to heal!

Let us know how you get on!

      Hi Lynda,

I had talked to you before. I hope you are doing good. I never had the bleeding from my navel. I was wondering if you ever broke out in a rash.

I had stated around the outside area of my navel one day with like little lumps and they turned red and itchy and got together as one like a rash. the next day I had two more. I called the PA for my surgeon to ask her as I still can not eat right. I am loseing wieght that is good but i am not hungry and scared to eat. I get such a bad stomache ache. i wanted to ask her about my rash and she has not called me back yet. My primary doctor called to tell me about another test i had done he needs me to go see a specialist for but that is some thing different. i guess when i turned 61 i started falling apart. I told him and he said i could put cortonzone cream on it for the itch. did you ever get anything like that. I hope the bleeding stops for the person who is bleeding bad from the navel. I hope you have a Happy New Year.

      Hi Terry,

You might have a surface skin infection, which is possible. I didn't break out in a rash from my latest surgery (a hysterectomy).  But a couple of my stitches got really inflamed.  I used some prescription antibiotic cream and tried to stop wearing pants for a while, just wore loose dresses, and tucked the waistband on my pants below the site.  Didn't look so fashionable, I can tell you that! smile

Another thing you could try is betadine, which is an orange colored wash used in surgery.  It goes everywhere, and does stain synthetics, but it also works on rashes.  I got it at the pharmacy.  It's an antibacterial.

I think that as we age, our skin tends to break down and is not as strong, and not as able to resist bacteria.  I typically use an antibacterial soap to clean areas of my body that tend to get irritated.  I use it when I shower, and use my body wash else where.

Also, if you're using wash cloths, I'd suggest you not do that, or use a new one every time you bathe.

Hope all this helps.  I, too feel as though I reached 60 and my body began to fall apart!
