Bleeding nipple

had my mammogram in December everything fine. Then about 3 weeks ago I started getting shooting pains in right breast so bad it would wake me up at night so the dr sent me for a ultrasound which showed 3 tiny simple cysts no further treatment needed. So that was that then Tuesday after my shower my right nipple started bleeding , it wasn’t a discharge but bright red blood. It stopped as quickly as it started and haven’t had any more bleeding. The dr was concerned so I’m booked in to have a mammogram on Monday and a ductagram on Wednesday the only thing is to have the ductagram you have to have active bleeding or discharge or it cannot be done . Has anyone had this nipple bleeding that happened just the once, what was the outcome ? Thanks in advance

    Dear Mary,

As a Retired Nurse Practitioner who would perform countless breast exams with evaluations on individuals, and discover undetected masses,

if the mammogram/ US are negative and the ductagram is negative or can't be done, an MRI of both breasts should be performed. Don't accept let's wait three months or six months and we will check again. Insist on it. I had left breast cancer in 2015, BTW, and my prognosis is excellent.

Please let me know what happens.

    I really care what happens!

    Warm Hugs to you!

      Dear Mary,

My identical twin and I had our cancers found by mammogram two weeks apart early enough to have an excellent prognosis.

Neither of us had bleeding via our nipples. I felt I should reach out to you, even though I do not share the same bleeding sign/symptom as you, as I know that is a rare sign of breast cancer.

I did want to offer support to you, as I am not certain you will find anyone who will respond yes on this site. Bleeding certainly can be a sign of breast cancer, but it doesn't necessarily mean it is breast cancer. Are you seeing a breast surgeon for the evaluation and work up? May I ask your age and where you live?

      Dear Mary,

Usually, bleeding from the nipple can be caused by

      1.Breast cancer

      2. Paget's Disease a type of Breast Cancer

      3. Intraductal Papilloma, a benign tumor.

If this turns out to be something serious, my suggestion to you is to find a breast specialist at a university Medical Center. You need someone you can trust. Often bleeding is caused by the benign Intraductal Papilloma, which is why they wish to get a ductagram, to obtain tissue for pathology.

I live in the States, in Delaware, a tiny state on the Atlantic Ocean.

The common symptoms of Breast Cancer include change in skin texture, pain in the armpits, nipple discharge and pulled in nipple. Though Nipple discharge is a one of the symptoms of Breast Cancer if it only occurred briefly and hasn't happened since, please dont alarm yourself. Kindly seek the expert advice of your doctor.

It could be a slightly torn vein in the breast. It could be muscle issues. I think you should get it checked out. In any event if problem persists see the doctor, but most likely the case is, you will recover over time. Time heals.
