Bloated all of the time! Please help

Hello. I'm a 23 y/o female, slim build and relatively healthy. I eat well, plenty fruit and veg and drink enough water (1-2 litres a day).

For about the past 7/8 weeks I've been bloated everyday. It gets better and worse but it is CONSTANT, even a bit when I wake up. It is very uncomfortable at times, and I'm so self conscious.

I have no abdominal pain but feel that I may be slightly more gassy too. I went to the docs and had blood tests that ruled out coeliac disease and she said IBS is unlikely as I have no pain. Also was worried about ovarian cancer but she said she isn't concerned because there of my age.

what could this be ??  And are there any tablets or probiotics that can help me?  I've tried a 7 day flat stomach sachets which made no difference at all.

You may have non celiac gluten intolerance which may explain the bloating. Ask your doctor about this.

Gluten is present in many things that you may not be aware of.  If you have an intolerance to it and you are unwittingly eating it every day, your stomach will be constantly irritated.  The only way to test this out is to go gluten free and see if it makes a difference.  You could also ask your doctor to refer you to a dietician. The main culprits are wheat and other grains.

Hi Lily, sorry to hear about your problem. I am an IBS sufferer, and bloating is a huge part of my problem. It sounds to me like you are eating too many fruits and vegs. They are very gassy, especially broccoli, string beans, pears, apples, grapes. Try to cut down a little and see if it makes a difference. Also try Chamomile and Peppermint tea. It works wonders on the digestive system. Be well!

Ok thanks. I've tried the peppermint tea too with no change. I'll try and cut down a little on the fruit but it just stops me snacking on unhealthy stuff haha thanks!

Gas-ex is always in my purse. It helps to move the gas out.I also carry chamomile tea with me. It also helps. At home, I put the heating pad on my belly

Wow, Lilyr92 - sounds like you're doing everything right....!

Maybe the next step is to keep a diary of what you eat and see if symptoms persist or improve as you take steps to change your diet somewhat. It could be lactose, gluten, or even the fruits/veggies you're eating. Since you've ruled out CD, you're free to experiment and see how you feel. Cutting out carbonation and gum may be a good place to start, too.

I'm glad you're not in pain! Keep your regular OB/GYN visits and seek help if you find anything changes there like irregular periods, pain, etc. It probably is your digestive system, from what you describe, though.

    GL!

I forgot to say that the celiac blood test can produce false negatives.  The only way of knowing for sure if you are celiac is to have a stomach biopsy taken.  You could also ask your doctor to refer you.

Thanks a lot everyone for all the suggestions and advice. I've decided today to completely cut out gluten and try that for a few weeks atleast to see if it makes a difference. In a way I hope it isn't gluten intolerance because it's so damn hard already!! Will report back soon

just a thought, I began with weird symptoms of IBS when I was late teens. some 50 odd years ago. A specialist told me I didn't eat enough roughage or greens, which I did, but these were in the days before IBS or gluten intolerance were diagnosed. I suffered periodically over the years with your symptoms and it was only after giving up eating bread that I showed any significant improvement.  However, if not very often (more than once a month) I usually get away with it, but if not and I irritate my colon the bloating and diarrhoea can continue for a week or more. i had severe bloating just before my monthlies because I had undiagnosed endometriosis so don't assume anything about the causes in your case. Other food such as doughnuts can give me problems too, in fact anything with yeast, I am glad to say chocolate cake etc is quite alright! I hope you soon isolate the problem.

Hi thanks for the advice. The only thing that's confusing for me is that I haven't had an upset stomach or any pain at all. I feel pretty much normal in myself other than the bloating.
