Hello,
Were your symptoms limited to bloating and gas retention? How severe was the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?
I want to find out whether I have HH before going to doctor and risking misdiagnosis because my symptoms are mild such as 2/10-pain scale of stomach/small-intestine ache/cramp and non-severe but shorter-breaths when waking up in the morning for approximately 30 minutes like I have a weight compressing my chest. For the rest of the day I feel 2/10 stomach ache/cramp constantly and 3/10 when I breathe in a large volume of air. I don't have any trouble when sleeping or lying down so far.

I'm awaiting ultrasound to diagnose my hernia, as you suffer from bloating and pain I've managed to recognise telltale signs. Mine is usually back ache and feeling of bubbles in back and abdomen. If I catch it quickly I take ranitadine 75mg (as pain usually returns so I like to know I can take another tablet ) and I apply ice to my stomach where I feel pain. This reduces inflammation and so far stopped a really bad attack. I've only been doing this for days but working so far. I also make sure when I'm sitting my back take most of my body weight this is really essential. Try not to drink anything until you feel pain easing.
I've also found rennie deflatine tablets helpful for gently realising gas.

I have been having EXTREME BLOATING and severe pain on and off for almost 2 years in my upper gut. After many tests, it wasn’t until an endoscopy a week ago that a 3cm hiatal hernia was found.
As much as the pain and indigestion is awful, the horrendous bloating and shortness of breath and weight gain is worse. This is all starting to control my life. I don’t know what to do.
Anyone else out there that has answers on what to do with the bloating? I am a 69 year old woman, very young and healthy and active otherwise. Please help me!!!!!!!

Hi Jean, and many others. Maybe in spite of your 10 month old postings my own experiences may help you. I must have had a Hiatus Hernia for the longest time. When I had a colonoscopy after a tumor (colon cancer) was removed my surgeon told me that I have a Hiatus Hernia. I asked if this could be repaired. He confirmed, but advised against it. He told me in most cases it comes back. I should try to live with it and watch what I eat and how much.
At first I didn't really bother looking into it and had my bouts of pain and suffering. Eventually I did research on-line and picked up a lot of good advice, which helps as long as I follow it. Maybe it can helpful to some HH sufferers.

Hi, I was so relieved to see your post. I hope you can read mine. I have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, and level 4 esophagitis ( due to lots of acid reflux over many years).
I have been nauseated for years. I now have real sour/metalic taste in my mouth, my throat burns, and my bloat is off the charts. I'm on a "waiting list" for a Toupee Fundoplication operation. Similar to full Fundoplication but stomach is wrapped around lower esophagus only 280°, not 360. Seriously the weight gain is the worst! How are you doing?

I have also just been diagnosed with a incurable condition that causes my oseghaghus to go into spasm and causes pain like chest pain. It is so bad that I have been in hospital as they have not known what was wrong. Now on trial medication and will hopefully get a clear diagnosis in a couple of weeks.
