Blotchy red rash/irritated skin on penile head (lasted for over 3 moths now)?

Posted , 410 users are following.

Part of the skin on the head of my penis has become slightly red and is causing some pain/irritation.

It first appeared the day after I used a condom so I think I must have had a reaction to the latex or some other substance in the condom.

The tip of the penis became super sensitive and noticeably hurt whenever it touched my underwear.

The skin was and still is noticeably red close to and directly around the meatus. This redness gets worse and bigger after I've come out the shower or masturbated.

An hour or so after ejaculation, I get a slight burn/irritation at the very end of the urethra when I urinate and this can last for a few days before subsiding. This has put me off from masturbating as much now.

This has lasted for about 3 months now with no signs of improvement.

I saw a doctor and was prescribed timodine/hydrocortisone cream and this didn't have much effect and am slightly worried it may just make things worse so have stopped using it for now.

It almost seems as if the redness comes from within the skin rather than on the surface.

I don't think its balanitis as I haven't had that for over 12 years when I was a kid and that was with the usual smegma discharge etc, whereas this is just redness.

I've attached images to show how it looks straight after showering, which is when the redness is at its worst and the contrast between the normal skin colour and the redness can be clearly seen.

How did you come up with that. Also is this contagious I’m wondering if women get this ?

    Hi,

I have the same problem. Started six years ago with pain in the tip of penis after ejaculation. For the next week or so, there would be a stinging/burn pain which occurred within five minutes of urination and lasted for approximately 30-45 minutes each time. It never hurt during urination.

Then, after a week, the redness started. It started in small patches on the glans and on the inner foreskin.

I had this for 18 months. I tried canesten, sudocrem, daktacort hc and aqueous cream. The only thing that made it better was aqueous cream. It was like my foreskin had stopped producing natural oils. I even left it unwashed for a week to see if any smegma would be produced, as it always did in my teens if i had not showered in a day or two (as you did as a teenager!). But after a week there was nothing there. No smegma, just redness.

The redness was always worse after sex. Not quite so bad after oral sex. but still there. I was swabbed a couple of times and was all negative. The strange thing about the swabs was that when I got home from the doctors, there were red lines on my glans EXACTLY where the swab had been wiped.

After 18 months of useless advice I demanded a circumcision.

I had the circumcision, and after the bandages came off it was like all my problems had gone. No stinging on urination, no mild sunburn pain, NO REDNESS! You would assume the redness would be worse after losing the protective skin, but no. it was better. After about a week of being circumcised, the skin peels away. I believe it replaces the top layer of skin. The layer we are all struggling with now! Perhaps a chemical skin peel would work!! Don't fancy trying it though!

For six years, I have had no problem at all. I have worn boxer shorts the whole time.

However, after a fairly sex filled weekend with my partner, i noticed a stinging after urination on the Monday. She also announced on Monday that she now had thrush. We had used a condom once that weekend. It was the same sting i had years before. I started to fill with dread. The stinging carried on for a week, then the even more dreaded red blotch appeared on my glans! Not happy. I assumed I also had thrush.

It's now been six months. I have had full STD screening NEGATIVE. Urine test, NEGATIVE. Apparently the STD test included tests for fungus. NEGATIVE.

I have tried, canesten, flucanazole tablet, hydrocortisone 1%, virgin coconut oil, vaseline, sudocrem.

I have days where is looks fine, and days where it looks very bad. The strange thing is that when using the coconut oil, which improved things a lot, when the skin looked normal with no redness, when applying the oil I could FEEL dry patches which I could not feel without the oil present. Sudocrem helped hugely with the redness but does seem to make the skin more dry.  Vaseline makes the red spots worse, and also creates a very mild itch, but a good itch if that makes sense, like a healing itch. This is what i have been using for five days now, twice per day. The stinging after urination has stopped, but the glans remains red but is getting better as I continue.

I believe this is chronic dry skin. It is unlikely that yeast would last over six months, coming and going and not actually getting worse. I will be booking to see a dermatologist soon.

But for now, I will keep with the moisturising using vaseline, and I am also going to be trying some man made fibre underwear as opposed to cotton. Cotton can still cause chafing, which is highlighted when i'm having flare up because it feels like my boxers are made from very fine grit sandpaper!

I will upload some photos later today.

Hey mate thanks for your input. Interesting you mention the lack of natural oils and build up of smega as I also notice that with myself, suddenly it just stopping appearing, around the same time as the issue began. The dermo I'm working with currently is convinced it's just extreme dryness made worse by my bodies 'excema tendency' as she described it, my father suffers from skins problems and although I have never had many other issues she says it's in my genes from him. Keep the updates coming along everyone, surely we can find a solution eventually!

Simple question: was yours the sudden result of sexual contact with a new partner?
    • Posted

No. Sexual contact yes, but I had this exact same thing before, and that was not caused by sex. Started after I masturbated. Hadn't had sex with my partner for about a week before that. We've been together for a long time too.

Right, as promised earlier, here are a few photos. Taken over the last month or so, hopefully they'll appear in date order. You will see a very minor sore in the meatus, i think this is what cause the sting after urination. It has been there from the very beginning. I repeat that all STD/fungal/bacterial swabs have come back negative. There is definite meatitis occuring, the severe example where the tip is extremely swollen is about two hours after oral sex. It subsides and is pretty much back to normal the next day. This is the worst it has been in that photo. You can also see in some images how flaky the skin is, it is like it is trying to heal but due to chafing etc, never quite recovers.

one drop of tee tree oil in 30ml water will clear the inflammation over a day or two ,don't use tee tree oil undiluted it will burn your skin

Hi ,I struggled with this condition called balanitus  for 4years now, tried broad spectrum fugus cream ,the skin recover a little bit but not as a hall and many other options ,at this moment i am using one drop of tee tree oil in 30 ml hemp seed oil seems to keep the inflammation clean.

I will go for a skin test may be a very specific fungus to combat and stop using sugar at all just drink apple cider vinger water .

the first picture is a year ago so you can see there is just no improvement with any creams luckily i didn't use steroid creams

Come to think about it about the same time that i got this condition i was using steroids injections for a knee problem ,could this steroid use cause this skin problem .

Balanitis can be caused by antibiotics, but I've never heard of it being caused by steroids, and steroid creams are sometimes prescribed to help.  Those pics look very different btw - are they both of you?  Maybe it's just the lighting and camera angle.

I don't think you have lichen sclerosus (also known as BXO or balanitis xerotica obliterans), but has a doctor ever suggested that you might have it?

If it's regular balanitis, then these links may help:

      (written for doctors)

Washing (with water, no soap) daily, and taking a leak and washing after masturbation or sex will probably help, and you could also try Canesten cream or Daktarin cream.  Loose fitting cotton underwear may help, and some sites recommend washing underwear with non-biological washing powder or liquid.

Hi, can I ask, has this affected the inside of anyone’s mouth, especially the tongue, patches that randomly come and go? Similar to geographic tongue? Also have any of your sex partners had any symptoms? Thanks

No, never had any marks on my tongue. I don't have eczema or psoriasis on any other areas of my body so do not think it is that. Vaseline has been making a good improvement. Applying twice per day and have been doing so for approximately six days. No masturbation or sex. My penis actually feels 'normal' for the first time in months. I mean normal in a way that you should not be aware that your penis is there. No strange swelling sensation or tingling at the tip when I have a full bladder. It also no longer feels like my underwear is made of sandpaper at the moment. Keeping the skin moisturised is certainly making a difference. If it was yeast, the moisturising should be making it worse.

When I used hydrocortisine 1% it did nothing at all. So, again, that should have made yeast infection worse. I used it for five days. I cannot see hydrocortisone making anything any worse when used short term and at such low strength, but I am circumcised so my glans skin is probably slightly tougher than other guys on here.

I am adamant it is just dryness, and then chafing. Either from underwear of your own foreskin.

In my case my partner also went and had a full battery of tests based on what I was experiencing.  She was negative for everything and her doctor told her she was clean.  I don't recall having had any tongue or throat anomalies.

This is actually the part I find particularly maddening.  How could all of this have started after having had sexual contact with this person, she is totally clear and clean then I start immediately having all these symptoms and problems.  It's totally bizarre.  Makes no sense.

The one and only thing I've been able to come up with is that it's a type of HPV.

      I've always had geographic tongue.

However, I have constant moving patches, sometimes that "fizz" (feeling wise), sometimes that look white/pink/yellow.
