Blotchy red rash/irritated skin on penile head (lasted for over 3 moths now)?

Posted , 410 users are following.

Part of the skin on the head of my penis has become slightly red and is causing some pain/irritation.

It first appeared the day after I used a condom so I think I must have had a reaction to the latex or some other substance in the condom.

The tip of the penis became super sensitive and noticeably hurt whenever it touched my underwear.

The skin was and still is noticeably red close to and directly around the meatus. This redness gets worse and bigger after I've come out the shower or masturbated.

An hour or so after ejaculation, I get a slight burn/irritation at the very end of the urethra when I urinate and this can last for a few days before subsiding. This has put me off from masturbating as much now.

This has lasted for about 3 months now with no signs of improvement.

I saw a doctor and was prescribed timodine/hydrocortisone cream and this didn't have much effect and am slightly worried it may just make things worse so have stopped using it for now.

It almost seems as if the redness comes from within the skin rather than on the surface.

I don't think its balanitis as I haven't had that for over 12 years when I was a kid and that was with the usual smegma discharge etc, whereas this is just redness.

I've attached images to show how it looks straight after showering, which is when the redness is at its worst and the contrast between the normal skin colour and the redness can be clearly seen.

It's probably eczema. It seems to me it will never go away no matter what I do. Even if the redness clears up, it becomes worst as soon as you get erect or start to masturbate. It's like you're sentenced to not having sex again. How can you show it to a girl? It's the worst.

same problem. multiple blood tests negative. antibiotics and antifungal cream etc did nothing. all started with a UTI. I have had this red rash for one year now, no improvment.

    very depressing.

Began after GF had a yeast infection which cleared up for her after 2 days.

I thought it couldve related to animals also as I was working on farm, always had dirty hands.

I am currently at my wits end here guys. I have had this issue for over 9 year now and it just does not seem to go away. In the last year it has gotten worse with regard to the symptoms. I have the same red blotchy skin on my meatus that all started a few days after i received unprotected oral sec from a woman i didn't know. In the early days of the problem, it was a tingling and alight discomfort that would come and go depending on my stress level. As time has passed the heavy inflammation days have become longer and more severe. The pain began to intensify and started lasting longer during "flareups". Now i have very few non painful days. The area right at the tip of my penis has become extremely inflamed and has serious dis-coloration the little bumps have become more pronounced although not super noticeable to the naked eye without seriously looking. The area right around my urethra is starting to become so sensitive and painful that wearing underwear hurts many days. I have seen a multitude of doctors including 4 Urologists, 3 Dermatologists, 3 general practitioners, and a genital dermatologist.

From the very beginning I tested negative for all STD's multiple times. Every time i see a new doctor, they insist on retesting me despite me being married and celibate for the last 8 years. I recently was tested for the complex urology testing which included .

    Ureplasma of different types

    Step A

    Candida

and varying other potential known causes and they all came back negative.

    I have tried multiple antibiotics

    anti fungal creams

    anti fungal pills

    steroid cremes

    antibiotic cremes

    anti virals (valtrax)

doctors thought maybe lichen planus (nope)

    lichen sclerosis (nope)

Balanitis (nope I shower a lot and have always been circumcized .

My urethra opening has small bumps and is kind of swollen open causing my urine stream to be "loose and frayed". Urine and semen tend to drip out long after they should.

Here is what i do know (It is specific to the gland and for some reason does not effect my internal urethra. Urination does not burn and might only hurt a little if the outer inflammation is heightened. Most of the time urination offers a little bit of relief. Visually it is not terrible causing the doctors to think that I am manifesting the problem in my mind. I can promise that this is an actual medical problem and that I am not manifesting this. At this point my only hope is that it gets bad enough that doctors start taking me seriously. The pain has really disrupted my life and its all I can think about now. Sex does not seem to bother me more but oral sex from my wife usually will trigger a flare up.

I have tried diet which is very healthy for me anyway. I have tried supplements including Quercitin, L Lysine, and varying other natural anti virals.

My pain has been intense now for a few months with varying degrees of bad. Right now is really bad and I finally got in enough pain to write this. I scoured this board and I can tell some have what i have and some do not. Tried to attach photos but will need to do it from my computer. Hope everyone is doing well and hope for some replies.

      Hi there,

I'm also suffering from the exact same symptoms your described after risky exposure:

Red botchy rash on glans, mostly near meatus/urethra opening. Worse right below urethra opening, and upside down red triangle shape rash from the tip going straight down. The redness seems to be coming from beneath the skin (like blood vessels below are damaged or inflamed), and appear to be almost microscopic tiny bumps.

Does hot showers or heat make the redness worse for you? I have noticed hot showers flare the redness a lot, and it goes back down about 45 minutes later.

I also have had change to urine stream ever since all of these symptoms began. Urine frays and splatters, and stream splits and beginning/end of the urination.

      My main symptoms are:

      1. Redness/rash bumps on glans
      2. Urethra irritation (not pain), feels like pee is always stuck in urethra
      3. Split urination

I've tried every type of topical/antifungal/steroid. Seen 4 dermatologists 3 urologists. Had cystoscopy. Taking every kind of antibiotic. Tested positive for ureaplasma and treated for it.

Antibiotics provide temporary relief from the urethra discomfort, but symptoms always return a few weeks later.

This has gone on for me for about 17 months now. Nothing has helped. Getting hopeless as well. Has impacted me severely with anxiety and depression.

Thanks for responding. I am going to try to keep trying different doctors and try some outside of the box stuff. Will keep you posted and please do the same.

Hello, I see you consider the problem was from HPV. Have you done some biopsy or bought self collect kit for testing HPV. Because some guys here have done it. Some positive HPV, some negative. I also think the HPV result will be helpful to you.

I have the same thing. Does it still burn when urinating? I got the same redness on the glans and burning sensation when urinating. I have done all STD tests and they were all negative and then got tested for Urinary tract infection and later for Prostatitis and both were negative. I tested a Fluconazole for candida but it didn't help. All of this happend when having a one night stand without protection. I've had no blisters and the doctors say it is no Genital Herpes. I've had this for 7 month.

any luck with this going away? how many years has this been for you

Hello all, I have had almost identical symptoms to the original post for the past 1 year. My problem came around in the same way as had unprotected sex with a female. At first a few small red spots on the glans and under the foreskin. I had an appointment with a GP and their conclusion was a common yeast infection. Canesten cream was used and spots dissapeared slightly but the blotchy rash was still there. It is on the top of the glans and right up close it almost looks "bloodshot". Throughout the past year, the rash seems to have remained in place. The foreskin covering the glands is significantly more red, however no pain, no trouble retracting the foreskin etc. After multiple appointments with the GP and different creams including antifungal, antibacterial, steroid creams, swabs, antibiotics, the rash still has not disappeared. I have also had multiple full screenings for STD's and all clear. The female has had the all clear multiple times and we have only been with each other. She also completed a course of canesten to rule out the possibility of passing a yeast infection back and fourth through sex. In the last month mid November 2022 I had sex again with the same female, and had a flare up the next morning which produces small spots, some with white heads all over the glans and under the foreskin. It was also a little itchy. I applied no creams and as usual a few days later it had cleared up. I now use condoms which do seem to help slightly but after sex I do always have a red glans and foreskin. A few months ago, I also had been referred to a dermatologist. A morning appointment where no sex or irritation made it look "completely normal and nothing to worry about". I am doing all the right things and have been for the past year such as washing with warm water only and drying straight away on a daily basis.

Reading through other comments and replies it seems there are many people with similar issues. I do ask myself is this normal or is this possibly an unknown condition that the medical industry has not explicitly diagnosed or found a cure for yet? It truly does not make any sense how everything used to be ok having unprotected sex with a previous partner and being ok. It has taken a huge toll on confidence and mental health not knowing why this is not clearing up.

Any update on this thread? I have similar and I suspect genital herpes, I've noticed small folliculitis type spots and a bit of a rash that randomly appears disappears too alongside the penis symptoms
