bowel prep and colonoscopy experience

Having scanned the internet to find out about other people's advice and experience, I want to let anyone facing a colonoscopy know what was like for me. It was absolutely okay. People say the prep is the worst part and it was a bit tiresome. I did a two and a half day special diet followed by clear fluids only and Picolax. It was nearly 48hrs without food but the Picolax wasn't as bad as I expected. In fact, I kept thinking it couldn't be working as I wasn't glued to the loo. I think the main thing is to prepare and plan for the prep and the procedure - making sure of having all the things needed for the prep diet and for during the clear fluids and then prep. Barrier cream (Sudocream) and moist loo paper were helpful, and having done 2.5 days of the low fibre, high carb diet must have helped as well. The only real problem I had was that I worried that the Picolax wasn't being effective enough so I went for my appt in dread that my bowel wasn't clear. But the nurse explained that as long as you go through the stage where you're passing just watery stuff, it's okay. And it was.
Re the procedure itself - I had a good consultant and the nurses on the Unit were very nice. Only problem was a mix up with the time of my appointment which left me waiting longer than anticipated. I felt sick with anxiety, little sleep and the after - effects of the prep on arrival. However, I asked to be given as much sedation and pain relief as possible and told them I was anxious. The sedation took the edge of things as did the analgesic but I could grab the Entonox when needed for the times when the doctor was steering the tube around the bends. It was over quickly and there was no point where it felt really awful at all. I watched progress on the screen and felt absolutely fine afterwards, although a little out of it from the sedation of course. So my advice to anyone facing this procedure is to carefully read all the info the hospital send you, contact the Unit if you're concerned about any aspect of the procedure or prep, and follow the instructions to the finest detail. And to plan ahead and get everything in house that you need and that will help you through the prep. And don't be afraid to let them know you're anxious - if you are. I hope this helps you if you are worried about having this procedure done - the whole thing really was okay and nothing like what I'd built up in my mind and from reading one or two horror stories on the web.

I don't mind the colonoscopy at all, it's a relief to get it started and therefore the prepping finished. I found the prepping a real pain in the - well you know where or you wouldn't be here
I am puzzled though. I've changed hospitals and areas since the last one. The old lot (london) made me do the three day prepping thing - eating white stuff, then eating clear stuff and purging, then nothing, etc. Horrible but although I do get the shakes when hungry, strangely, that did not affect me when fasting for this. However, new hospital (Surrey) have told me that I only have to prep the day before. Any insight, anyone? I would hate to not have emptiness for the procedure, but equally would be glad to skip the three day prep.
I always ask for maximum sedation. I have never had pain or problems, apart from when they forgot to sedate me u ntil the last minute and then didn't give me enough. Be firm about this!

By the way, I was given a full report of what they had done during the procedure with detailed information on the polyps removed and what would happen next before I left the hospital. Not sure it is standard procedure but I thought it was excellent (Glenfield Hospital, Leicester) and all the staff very careful to keep you informed at every stage.

He had one back in Feb too . He may need another but my son cant go through that again, he was stuck to the loo. My gut instinct was coeliac diseas as my 12 year old daughter has it, but Callum was not making it to the loo, had abdominal pains etc, he has been diagnosed with a few thing one colitis, he has the characteristic of coeliac disease despite blood tests negative, we are waiting on his HLA status gene test. If this is positive he will only be put on a gluten free diet if it is triggered. He will be screened reg. He is on Asacol now for the inflammation in his bowel. He couldn't cope with the bowel prep, he was also put out as he is a kid but as a day patient but next time like my daughter he will be admitted as they can do it in a nicer way over 48 hours rather than a week. Good luck

Clarebear, I am sorry your poor boy has had such a lot to put up with. I hope that he feels better soon. It's bad enough as an adult, but all this as a child must be very hard
BTW, I am now prepping for my colonoscopy as it got postponed. This is the first time I've done it with Picolax. It didn't heat up when I mixed it?! I'm now worried it's not as it should be and I might not be "clear" for tomorrow. Also the effects aren't all that startling if you know what I mean. As a crohns patient, it's not all that much different from normal.
Can't wait to eat again!
I tried a nice brew for the prep day - stock cube dissolved in hot water, mixed with touch of chilli powder (not too much!) and dash of Worcester Sauce. Tasty enough to distract from the longing for actual food!

this bit more than the actual procedure I think. Reading this forum has made me a little more relaxed though.I Will update with full experience after the procedure has been done. Fingers crossed all goes well.

Super efficient, nice staff and everything was explained really well before they started the colonoscopy. This was a little more uncomfortable than I thought it might be. Stomach cramps and pain meaning ha ING to use engines / gas and air. Only er quite quickly and it was so nice to be able to eat a day have a proper cup of tea. To sum up, if you are having one of these there's no need to worry too much. It really wouldn't bother me too much to have it done again. :-)

Have a colonoscopy on Wed, due to start picolax or citra fleet as called here tomorrow, terrified of it happening again because i i havent been to toilet since i had moviprep.
Have been tightly restricting my food since saturday and feel hungry and ill but too scared to eat in case i make the constipation worse.
Didnt help that she wrote on report i failed to prep properly and it was poor. Did everything to the letter.
