Breakfast

What do people eat for breakfast?  If you give up/are watching carbs, I find breakfast the most difficult to deal with.  No toast, porridge, cereals of any sort, bacon, sausages, etc etc.

I was one of the lucky ones and LOST weight with PMR (10kgs).  Now I am lowering my dose of Pred (at present 5mgs) I have put on 4kgs in 3 months!!  I've never been excessively overweight but before Pred I was 11 stone (and at 5'6" that's too much) and as my OA is a really aggressive sort I don't think that would be advisable.

I can manage other meals, but breakfast?!?

I know Constance! Breakfast is so frustrating because we must have food in tummy before taking the Prednisone!!!

i eat 3 egg whites every single day.  Lately I read 1 egg yoke is ok, so maybe 3-4 times a week I'll top off my eggs with a runny yoke, helps add some wetness to food as I now have dry mouth, ugh.

i did breakdown last week and bought some grainy bread to make toast and smeared olive oil butter on top!!!! Tasted so good!  But I know I shouldn't eat that, I didn't buy any bread since then! wink

In my eggs I often mix some spinach, maybe cook some red bell pepper before I add eggs. Sometimes add Mushrooms.  Avacado goes well, so I can get more fat.  Even cucumber pieces go well with mixture too.

Luckily my hubby brings home fresh eggs from nearby farmer! But I also buy larger eggs from grocery store.  But wow, we go through the eggs!

oh, and my hubby cooks bacon sometimes, but I sort of lost my taste buds for a while and couldn't taste it, and am suffering acid reflux due to Pred and so I'm avoided that high fat.

I have left over salmon from last night, so maybe I'll put that in my eggs this morning. wink

Nothing wrong with bacon and German sausages (bangers not Ausschnitt) in moderation - despite the WHO's edict last week! Cheese, eggs, smoked salmon, yoghurt and berries (Total Greek is gorgeous I think, almost like cream!).

Look for ideas on the Atkins diet website for example - their new version with low carbs allowed has some excellent ideas.

Layne - why 3 egg whites every day? Have you not heard of the studies that have shown that eggs are NOT bad after all? It doesn't make much difference what cholesterol-containing foods you cut - the liver makes it so you can't influence the blood levels much. The cholesterol in egg yolks is a "good" cholesterol and has an influence on the "bad" cholesterol which makes it less "bad". The conclusion of the last report about eggs was that actually it is good for us to eat up to about 7 whole eggs a week. Most of the goodness of eggs is in the yolk, omitting them deprives us of a lot of nutrients.

And to be honest - since we are, however we want to look at it, in the final third of our lives, it is probably a bit late to worry too much about eating a slice of bacon!

I'll put the non-stick frying pan on for lunch and get out the Bratwurst and Bacon.  However, it's the weight gain I am concerned about and the FAT?

Didn't know eggs were good for you.  Can't seem to get real Greek yoghurt in town, we have to do with 'Greek style", probably not so good but it certainly tastes good.

Greek-style just means it was made somewhere other than Greece - like champagne can only be made in Greece (see my post to Julian). Don't you have Total yogs in a decent-size supermarket?

A report on low fat diets has just been published and shows it isn't the best way to lose weight. Fat in moderate amounts is more satisfying and keeps the blood sugar more stable so you don't get the hunger pangs that make you eat chocolate and stuff. Fat is more essential to life than carbs, though you do need some carb for getting nutrients.

      I don't understand 'Total' yogs.

Hunger isn't something I suffer from.  I can't remember a time when I felt hungry.

I looked up Abroath when you suggested it yonks ago.  Massively expensive.  I'm too mean to buy it even though we both love fish of all sorts.

Total is the brand name. I'll pm you a link so you can see what it looks like - I can get it at Spar here so I'm sure you must be able to get it too.

I just read an article on butyrates that are very good for inflammation and one of the best sources is butter (in moderation of course).  Yeah!!!

Among the short-chain fatty acids, butyrate is the most potent promoter of intestinal regulatory T cells in vitro and the only one among the group which is an NIACR1 ligand;[31] these Tregs in turn increase interleukin 10 (an anti-inflammatory cytokine) synthesis in the cell.[31]

Other than the (wicked I know) solid fat for the chip fryer, the only oils/fat allowed in our house are butter and good quality olive oil.

The other night we had a veal chop - the time before it had been done on our Lotus BBQ grill (a very pricey little number that prevents the fat dropping onto the coals) out on the balcony, this time it was in butter in the heavy non-stick pan. Difficult to know which tasted better. Either way - at our age I don't think that we have too much to worry about keeping off the bacon and red meat.

You have all seen the real analysis of the figures haven't you? You have something like a 7% chance of developing colon cancer instead of a 6% chance. That's what the 18% increase really means!

Eileen, I agree with you that fat in moderate amounts is more tasty even in Greek Yogurt and milk (not the 2 % version they sell), and keeps the blood sugar more stable.  Fat is better than reducing carbs too much.

Only thing I don't agree with - I pretty much only use milk in tea and I cannot abide a cup of tea made with whole milk! Nor skimmed - that's a waste of space. Semi-skimmed it is :-)

Hear hear!!! BTW I will keep reading as I am hoping someone will come up with where I can get this 'Total' yoghurt! Just a thought, I really love the yoghurt in the full fat variety of 'Muller fruit corners'. I wonder if that's it?!

I've sent you a link as a pm as I can't put it up here.

Where do you live? All the major supermarkets in the UK stock it. The website I sent the link for allows you to change location and do a supplier search - for countries all over the world.

Thanks Eileen. Got it written down. Hopefully will be lapping some up by tonight!

home made probiotic yoghurt for breakfast, gets a bit boring after the first few months. Suggested on this forum. Makes enough improvement to stomach to persevere.

Kippers? Or other smoked fish with the egs?

Fed up with home made yoghurt.  Greek I like.  Kippers, I agree - can even buy them over here.  Smoked haddock, can 't buy.

I thought I ought to look up what the difference is between yoghurt and greek yoghurt. We make 1.5 litres of yoghurt at a time. Add powdered milk to full fat. First portion I take vertical cut to the bottom of the container. Next day the hole is full of whey which I drain off. And so on. I think I'll call it Almost Greek yoghurt.

Still boring eating the same thing every day though.

Our batches take about a half hour to set up and 12 hours to mature. We have enough culture for more than 100 litres - A$16.50 - which is much more cost effective than supermarket sachets.

Sadly my kippers are canned. But better than none.

Blow that - that sounds like work to me!  Not one of my favourite hobbies.😠

I understand that yoghurt of the Greek variety has a DOC-type protection, of the sort champagne has! So it can only be called "greek" if was made in Greece! Not ure what happens if someones calls their house "Greece", a ruse similar to one which apparently the Japs tried to say their whisky was made in Scotland. It may be apocryphal...

I think my favourite breakfast is a smokie with a soft poached egg. Very Arbroath :-)

You can have smokies shipped from Arbroath - just a suggestion.
