Breakfast

What do people eat for breakfast?  If you give up/are watching carbs, I find breakfast the most difficult to deal with.  No toast, porridge, cereals of any sort, bacon, sausages, etc etc.

I was one of the lucky ones and LOST weight with PMR (10kgs).  Now I am lowering my dose of Pred (at present 5mgs) I have put on 4kgs in 3 months!!  I've never been excessively overweight but before Pred I was 11 stone (and at 5'6" that's too much) and as my OA is a really aggressive sort I don't think that would be advisable.

I can manage other meals, but breakfast?!?

Another question to go along with this. I have never been a breakfast eater--the thought of food early in the morning about gags me. This causes a problem since our pred has to be taken with food. The only thing I've figured out so far, is I take it with about 4 oz. of Kifir milk. I figured this would coat my stomach & give me some probiotics too. What I don't know, is how much food is really adequate to be taking with the pred? Is my 4 oz. of Kifir enough to aid with absorption??

I read a comment by a pharmacist somewhere recently that really a glass of milk was probably enough for most people - I know a lot who use a yoghurt so I imagine a glass of Kefir is fine. I think you would know - if you have no stomach problems I doubt there is much need to worry.

I guess what I was really wondering about was it the food was needed for the prednisone uptake into our systems or just as a buffer to prevent stomach upset.

Much more the buffer because of the potential for gastric irritation by pred. Hence the advice not to mix it with NSAIDs. Or the prescription of omething like omeprazole - which has its own side effects.

Thanks--good to know. I'm supposed to have my yearly physical this week, with a fasting blood draw at 8 AM. I pretty much have to take my pred at 5 AM if I'm going to be up and moving to get there by 8 AM, which means it won't be a total fast. Trying to figure out what would be the best food to take to minimize any skewing of my results. i suppose I could try taking it once without food.

Can you wait until after the blood has been taken?

Or take it immediately before bed maybe for once? I have to say - when I have my annual blood screen I ALWAYS accidentally on purpose forget it is meant to be fasting but since all I have with in the morning is 3 mugs of tea it isn't serious but the blood sugar is always not the sort of reading you really want for fasting ;-)

Did you know that if they are doing blood lipids (fats) you shouldn't drink any alcohol for 24 hours beforehand? No - me neither...

When I first started taking pred, I took it after I got up, but I was always so stiff for so long in the morning, I finally used the suggestion here on the forum to get up early & take it, then go back to bed for a couple of hours. Works much better for me. I think that's why I'd rather take it without food one day than to put off taking it until after my appointment. This will be an experiment this time.

Oh darn, you mean I can't have my 5 bottles of wine the night before?? Just kidding, but I didn't know that about alcohol. Not too much of a problem for me since I pretty much gave up what little I drank when I got PMR.

As I say - me neither!!!!!!

No, I still partake of the vine - it makes the things I have had to lose because of PMR (there are a lot) almost bearable.

I'm afraid this doesn't help, but I have a small porridge! Probably shouldn't but it does keep me going until lunch and l avoid carbs for the rest of the day. Does taking it just before the pred actually effect the metabolism of the carbs? I am slowly losing the pred weight as the dose reduces, down to 7.5.

Another thing Eileen. I didn't realise that l shouldn't be taking lanzopralol with pred. Neither my Doc or pharmacist has said anything!

lt's such a minefield out there!

I've just read the post - sorry that is a confusing statement how I have written it..

"Hence the advice not to mix it with NSAIDs or the prescription of omething like omeprazole - which has its own side effects."

You shouldn't use NSAIDs with pred because they both cause gastric irritation and together it is worse. Or, if you do, you should be prescribed something like omeprazole to protect your stomach - but it comes with its own side effects,

      Oh for an edit button!

Darn - forgot to say, nothing wrong with a small bowl of porridge, love it. It isn't a case of NO carbs, it's a lot LESS carbs. Nothing to object to in a bowl of proper porridge - the ready pack things are a bit different, far too much added sugar to be good for you - and sugar spoils the taste anyway!

Thank you. I have had a gastroscopy and there is nothing wrong, I just need lanzopralol or I have terific indigestion. I still need to top it up with Gaviscon. Putting my Pre in gel capsules has helped a a lot.

I'm afraid I do use the ready made porridge, nice, and, calorie counted! have to have some sins!

Nothing against them for anyone who likes them and they are really really easy to use but I can't stand sweet porridge!

I had a small measuring beaker that had a mark for the right amount of porridge oats and then I added the beaker full of cold water in a deep bowl - straight into the microwave. About half the price too!

You're still very 'Scottish" aren't you?  The thought of porridge with water really puts me off.  Porridge with milk, topped with muesli and a spoonful of brown sugar.  That's the thing!

I'll make you squirm a bit more - I only put salt in it! No sugar. And cold milk on top... (That's only to save washing another bowl - you are meant to take a spoon of porridge and dip it into cold milk so te milk doesn't get too hot!)

There is a site called webmd which includes a page for checking medication side effects.  Just google your medication and add the words side effects to your search.  The same site also has a page for checking  drug interactions.

Both NSAIDs and pred can each cause gastric irritation to the extent of bleeding - put them to gether and it is even worse.

As Anhaga says, the side effects can be found just by googling - but upset stomach is common, even really bad diarrhoea. Some people get chest pain - but I can't remember them all of the top of my head and I'm not at home to look it up easily.

Thanks for your help Eileen - it was the bleeding I was worried about - will speak to my GP next week and see what he says - havent got diarrhoea yet but am constantly going to the toilet

Thanks for your advice, sorry to have disturbed you when you not at home

      Take Care xx
