Breast Lump

can anyone tell me anything positive? I'm 55 years old and have found a lump in my breast, just below and a bit including the area surrounding my nipple. I've been having some discomfort around my left breast for a while now which I suppose made me check it out consequently I found the lump which my dr says is about 4x5cm; quite large I thought. If I press really hard the lump feels quite hard but if I press gently, if feels softish. I am assuming the worst but won't know anything for weeks. The waiting is hell already.

yes, I intend to do that tomorrow. I'm going to nag each day I think until I get one. Thank you so much for being so supportive. I'm feeling a little easier now that things are starting to happen. Be glad when its all over though.

Thanks for your letter.
I am so glad that you have now been seen, and are now in the system. I really hope that they can fit you in for a mammogram sooner rather than later - it is the waiting that is so hard to bear.
I know it is difficult, when completely preoccupied by anxiety, but please try to look after yourself, especially as you have clearly been very poorly until recently.
Btw - the pain you describe sounds very much as if you have strained your pectoralis major tendon. This is the large tendon that runs across the front of your armpit, next to the side of your breast, if you hold your arm up to the side, as if pretending it was a wing. It can be quite painful, and tenderness may be present under the upper, outer quadrant of the breast. It may have been caused by repetitively using your left arm (particularly if you are right handed) for something unusual for you - tennis, decorating, heavy weeding and so on. It doesn't sound typical for anything unpleasant associated with a breast lump. If I am correct - and it is hard to say from an e-mail, as you may imagine! - then stop doing whatever is aggravating it, and try an NSAID (if you can tolerate them) such as Ibuprofen or diclofenac. Rest it, but make sure that you keep gently moving your shoulder through its full range of movement - perhaps in the shower or bath - so that your shoulder doesn't get stiff. Physio may help.
Take care

OMG, I've just done what you suggested and it hurts! I now tend to agree with you that I could well have strained something in my chest. To help my recovery from surgery I joined a gym and thinking about it, I am wondering if the pain is related to weights. I will give them a rest for a bit and see what happens. That is a bit of relief. Thank you so much for suggesting this. I have been so preoccupied with my boob that I didn't even consider that this could be something unrelated.
No luck yet with the mammogram, I will phone again tomorrow. Anxiety is a horrible thing.
Thank you again for responding to my posts. Just what you mentioned there re straining my chest has made me feel so much better about things. I really mean so much better, thank you.
