What as anyone told you regarding breast stoke and leg action post TKR. Seems to be conflicting ideas online. Will ask my surgeon in May but wondered?

Interested in this, as I am a keen swimmer. I have been told no to breast stroke, but I lost the ability to do it anyway! Can you do crawl? Less demanding on legs?

Hi - I understand it is the action of the breaststroke kick that is dangerous to the joint. Makes sense I guess but I am sure there are post TKR folk doing it anyway. I met a man recently who runs 10K everyday post TKR. I guess it depends how long you want to wait before you go through it all again !!!

      Indeed😊 I want mine to.last forever lol!!!!

I'm not going to do anything high impact and didn't really do so before anyway. I am swimming, do aquatone, pools work, ankle weight and resistance bands and static bike.as well as working on extension working up to road bike soon if able. I'm almost 4 months post been back to work for 3 weeks and to be honest finding the tiredness worse than the physical stuff now Emotionally overwhelming 😥😥😥

Wow Jan you sound like you are doing amazingly well smile I am now 8 months post TKR and it is going well BUT  I am self employed and dont have to be on my feet for long periods - the worst thing for me has been standing. I am able to go for decent walks and keep up with others. I am nearly straight and maybe 115 bend. I still have pain and stiffness but it is no longer all encompassing in fact I feel great most of the time. I am not as agile which is a pain - lifting that foot and knee still does me in sometimes but I am happy with where I am at. I am off on an adventure to Europe in August and the 17 hour flight followed by 6 hours is a bit daunting but it would be anyway !!

So yes - the breaststroke kick can pose problems for people who had total knee replacement. I tried using it less than 3 month out and the knee said no - I don't like it so I refrained from doing it and kept to backstroke and freestyle. I am about 7 months out now and try the kick periodically. Although it feels better doing it I can still feel the knee saying to me the next morning - nah - wait a little longer. The knee isn't in pain but I do feel like it's still not ready for it. The other knee doesn't like it either, It's really not the best stroke for knees in general - healthy or otherwise.
