Broken My Ankle

Hi All. I broke my ankle in 3 places last week and the reality of what lies ahead is setting in. I was wondering if any of you could give me any advice or tips that you have picked up after suffering a similar injury. I am especially struggling to get around at the moment as I have not got the hang of using crutches.

Hi Luke, I broke my ankle in February , tibia and fibula. Had surgery in March. I was 9 weeks nwb. The first two weeks after surgery is important to rest as much as possible. Keep your leg elevated all the time , use about three pillows, place them at a incline , starting just under the bottom and the highest level under the foot. Use the pain meds prescribed. Stock up on things like enjoy, reading, movies, games, hobbies etc. also have friends and family around as much as possible. This is a long process physically and mentally. This is a great site to be on as you will get a lot of support and advice on it. We have all had the same struggle and pain. Some more than others. I am now doing 95% of the things I used to do before I broke my ankle in February, and at one time I thought I would never walk or be the same again. If you remain positive you have already won a huge part of the battle towards your recovery. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water , ask your doctor about extra calcium and magnesium. And remember rest is important, as our body does most of it's healing when we rest. Good luck and I pray you have a speedy recovery.

Look on eBay for knee scooter with basket. basket great for food, books, remotes, clothes. Safer than trying to carry stuff.

    Hi Luke

It will take time. You need to elevate the leg to reduce the swelling. This in turn will make weight bearing easier. Do you have weight bearing cast on?

      Hi Luke

I'm simply mystified as to why I was told to weight bear straight after surgery. Doesn't seem that this is normal practise. I hope your recovery is short and pain free.

I am 4 weeks post ORIF surgery with fractured fibula and torn ligaments. Crutches did not give me the mobility I wanted, The knee scooter is the way to go untreated l you can weight bear. It gives you a y back your independence. You can move be at a more normal pace. Your doc can give. You a script and it is often covered under insurance
