Bunion Operation

I hope this will help anybody having or thinking of having a bunion operation.
I had my operation on my right foot 4 weeks ago. I had read so many horrific articles about how painful it is etc. etc. I can only speak for myself, I felt some pain for a couple of days which painkillers took care of. After that it was a little uncomfortable for 10 days. After two weeks I went back and had the dressing changed, and apart from the inconvenience of resting my foot for 6 weeks, I would not hesitate in having the left one operated. I still have two weeks to go before I return to the fracture clinic and have the plaster dressing removed. Hopefully then I will be able to start walking again. I was given elbow crutches a black boot to wear when moving about the house, these has been a godsend.
I hope this has helped anybody who is worried about having a bunion operation.

I was just wondering how old you where when you had surgery and how bad they had got. I'm 30, live a healthy lifestyle but have bunions on both feet. However my left foot is constantly sore and keeps getting infected. My doctor keeps telling me to avoid the operation while I can, but its really affecting my lifestyle. I love running and being active and i worry that if I don't have the operation they'll just get worse, but if I do will I be able still have the active life i like to lead?

I am just wondering..... can you have the operation when you are 13?? Because, I haven't experienced any pain yet but I definitely have bunions and they are affecting the shape of my toes and my feet, especially the right one. I am worried that it will affect me later in life.
Thank you,

The first thing to do at your age and since you're still growing, is to go to your GP and see what they say. It may be that you can have something made to correct your feet. Don't wait as the sooner you go the sooner it will get sorted out. They may send you to someone who specialises in foot problems in teenagers. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

i hope you've made an appointment to see your GP and please let us know how it went as there may be other teenagers who could do with your courage to come on here and admit to having bunions at 13 years. By telling us the result of your meeting with the GP/Consultant it may give others the courage to get help. That's what is so useful about this forum. Thank you!

I had both my bunions done 7 months ago. I too was nervous but being someone who doesn't take much time off work etc I thought best thing to do was have both done together. I probably expected too much from my recovery as I was told that I would be fully recovered within 3 months. I wasn't, and thought something had went wrong. This caused me a lot of anxiety. Saying that, I was back at work 3.5 months. As long as you can expect a long recovery you should be ok. You do get a lot of good advice from this forum bit do remember that everyone is different.

Hi Rita, it's been 2 years since I considered surgery but I've been put off as it's a less successful operation than knee or hip operations so not to be undertaken lightly! The trouble is that now my left foot, second toe is tucking behind my big foot and I think I might have a Neuroma. I'm seeing a consultant in the U.K. In the next few weeks and I will discuss the bunions at the same time! I would have the minimally invasive surgery, otherwise known as keyhole surgery as the recovery time is better and less damage to nerves etc if you can! How about you?
