Hello, i am 47 years old and had right hip replacement 5 weeks ago.  My ankle is still puffy and has a burning sensation at night and will not tolerate any covers.  I am down to one crutch and walk with ease but feel i lose my balance easily when walking outside, has anyone else had these syptoms? Hi Michelle,

I am 6l and had my right hip replaced July 29 this summer.  At 5 weeks I was not active at all, just going out to physio 2x a week, using a cane....I did not have any pain or swelling but I did have the burning sensation in my operated ankle...the physiotheraphist told me to put a towel/cloth in the small of my back...this did the trick..she said it is the nerves from the back giving this reaction to laying on our back with feet up...maybe try it a night or two...the towel should be quite flat, and you should not feel it like a lump (then it would be too big)....

I'm l4 weeks and just went back to work doing two small shifts of retail of 2 hours and I'm now having problems with pain in my inner thigh, so there you go...it seems like all it going well, and if you push yourself when not ready the body let you know about it...I will stop working for two weeks and see if the pain eases up.  I still do physio daily at home and go out 2 x a week to keep it up and change up the exercises.....you will get lots of information on this site....though always check with your own doctor or physio to get their opinions......Patricia from Toronto

Thank you Patricis, i will try the towel in the small of my back.

My physio told me to walk as much as possible, i went on a bus today to get some shopping!  I get tired very quickly, so maybe i am doing to much.

Still too early.  Put yr legs up 3 x p day. Watch that swelling. Took me 8-10 wks for swelling to go down.  Balance exercise against symptoms inc swelling .. if you can afford it buy compression inflatable leg massagers. Worth every cent/penny.

Can you see a physio/osteo for paid massage? Soon as yr stitches/staples out, have warm bath with oatmeal,   oil and rub gently from foot down wards. Theres a lot you can do yrself in a bath. Rest, keep warm, do yr exercises and be patient.  If you dont have improvements in 6 mnths then is the time to start screaming! you will probably be fine. You know yr body. Let common sense be yr guide. I never thought id live to see the day 9mnths on and almost normal.  It takes a year but we have to find that our for ourselves as they tell you nothing of the sort. It is a BIG deal

contact your surgeon let him know.

I had it like that too but that was within a few days. After that i had physical therapy at home for 5 weeks, and walked without walker. Elevated to cane.

You will feel losing your balance until you start those exercises. You're not ready yet unless your physical therapist already has a plan for balance. Speak to your physical therapist. Take your time. High Protein foods will help with your recovery.  ice therapy will reduce your swelling. Use ice every hour for only 10 minutes. No more than ten minutes per hour.

Hi Beachbum, thanks for your reply.

My leg was so painful and swollen 11 days post surgery i was tested for a DVT which thankfully was negative. I will try the ice and see if that helps.

Hi Michelle, I'm about 4 weeks post op and not had exactly same as you but did have hot, sensitivity near the wound at night. I found putting an icepack on it - wrapped in a thin towel or similar really helped.  I was also told by my consultant that my ankles could remain puffy within the 6 week period (although they haven't). No problems with balance. But if you concerned you could contact your consultant.  Good luck
