Burning type of discomfort

Posted , 9 users are following.

I'm 3 weeks post THR and I think I'm doing well. Walking with 1 stick, able to do most things about the house, but when analgesics are due I get a burning type sensation around the whole hip site. Not the wound area, rather the joint. It may be that I'm overdoing things and that I need to slow down a bit. I've always been a hare rather than a tortoise. Advice would be appreciated.

I know we're all different but after only 3 weeks one crutch seems ambitious. I stayed on 2 more or less for 6 weeks and almost straight to none...physio said one crutch was making me limp!! Try slowing down a bit...are you doing physio exercises too?....there's leaflets on the web if you search under post thr exercises...they really do help!

I suspect I am doing too much, too soon, but I get bored easily. I'm doing all the physio exercises too. I'll try chilling a bit and maybe try resting again for an hour mid afternoon.

      Thanks

I too get bored easily and am now just four weeks on but want to do things involving driving, bending and getting up laddes and I can't! Am still on two crutches as per instructions when out and about but have gone to one in the house as it's impossible to carry things otherwise. I'm not as tired as I was and think that's been what kept me from wanting to do things. It's a balance as when you don't use much energy you think you've got loads but actually you come a cropper when you overdo it. I keep referring to what others on this forum have said about taking it easy and steady but it's not easy when you feel so much better than before the op!

The advice I received did say I could go to 1 stick after 2/3 weeks. I only use one outside if someone is with me, except yesterday. I think that as the pain isn't too bad at all, and certainly better than pre-op, I am pushing myself too far. We don't get physio post-op, as the hospital involved does an enhanced discharge programme and we get all instructions pre-op. I will try to slow down a bit. Thanks.

    Hi

Well patience never was my middle name   LOL

My pain wasn't burning.....more muscular in between pain killers.

The nurse came every few days to check the wound and i mentioned it to her.

She said you have never seen a THR  LOL  They are not very careful once they detach the hip.....it gets pushed out of the way while they are working....no wonder your sore....dont worry that will go

Dont know if thats any help

    Love

Thanks for this. I only get discomfort when I leave pain relief for around 5 hours. I only take paracetamol through the day and add some codeine at night. I'm probably being too stubborn.

      Hi

Well when I left hospital I was warned...."Keep on top of the pain.....dont play catch up" So in other words take the meds that are prescribed when they are due.....I'm cutting down now but certainly at the begining that is their rule LOL

    Hi Flossytwitter,

I don't know what analgesics are, but sounds like you're doing great.  I am also a hare but my doc has been very cautious and restrictive.  I'm 7 weeks post and just stopped using a cane and resumed household activities.  Everyone says  give time for muscle and bone to really tighten around the prosthesis so you shouldn't overdue it but I know it's hard not too.  Good luck.

It certainly is very early days and you are doing so well. Do take it easy when you get any twinges and just rest for a while. I am now nearly 7 months in from my THR and still have so much pain and stiffness. I do my excercises as regularly as possible but still find I get lots of pain. I do hope you continue to progresss well.

Flossytwitter ask yourself are they a new medication or conflicting with others. If the answer is no to both then contact your gp. But could it be that the wound could be knitting together under the skin.

I think I'm just not taking them at appropriate time, I'm trying to eek them out rather than take them properly. I literally forgot them at 5 this afternoon and then realised I needed them. I usually take them religiously on time.

It is important to take your medication Flossytwitter. I used to do the same but it is impossible now that I have 10 different prescription's.

But to help with the burning sensation. Put a clean cloth in the freezer for 20 minutes then place it on the affected area. But be careful not to place it on the wound so not to aggravate it.

The burning sensation is pain from inflammation. Ice the area of and on at 20 min. Intervals.

    hi flossy

eileen's advice is top notch  especially if you intend to exert yourself make sure you've taken the painkillers (analgaesics jan) and shorten the time between doses until you are symptom free.

once you're fully mobilised and pain is limited then you can start trying to extent the period in between dosages.for now your priority is to get mobile and to be slowly increasing your dexterity day by day, exercing walking massaging the vicinity,

go for it you're doing great!!!!
