Burning type of discomfort

Posted , 9 users are following.

I'm 3 weeks post THR and I think I'm doing well. Walking with 1 stick, able to do most things about the house, but when analgesics are due I get a burning type sensation around the whole hip site. Not the wound area, rather the joint. It may be that I'm overdoing things and that I need to slow down a bit. I've always been a hare rather than a tortoise. Advice would be appreciated.

    Sorry i cannot help as my op isn't until next Tuesday.  I think burning pain is inflamation which is only natural. Can you tell me please if its ok to bend forward to wash hair.  I do not understand the 90 degree rule, what does it relate to. Thank you helen

      You need to be really careful when bending.....the 90degree rule is the angle of your knee to hip so the joint isnt less than right angles to the femur....look up after care on google...THR post op care or something like that...it was about 6/8 weeks before I tried bending any further....now i can sit with knees to chest!!

      Hi Helen,

      No its not OK to bend forward to wash your hair......I missed that....I tend to get on my knees, and bend over the bath and use the shower to do my hair but I was told NO. Have you got a shower? Standing and washing your hair is OK but I hate a shower, love my bathsbiggrin

      I went to the hairdresser a few extra times......lying back {which is OK}

      I also used dry shampoo sometimes in between, or I found a shampoo that doesnt need water......that was another option in between washes if I thought it needed a bit of a lift. I sat down, squeezed the liquid on my hair, then you lather it and then just towel it off. My hair felt better than with the dry shampoo.

      You should have a vistit from the physiotherapist or occupational therapist and they will tell you exactly what you can and can't do.

      What got me was if I was out for coffee.....I couldnt bend orver to pick my coffee cup upfrown  The table had to be high enough that you just reached and got the cup. You should get a grabber to pick things up with {by the way where are you? I'm in the UK} Not coffeecheesygrin

      If there is anything specific you want to know ask and I'll try to help

      I've had 2 THR's

      Love

      Hi Helen. I asked this very question of the OT in the mock-up flat at the hospital. She said as long as I didn't bend fully over the side of the bath when using the hand-held shower attachment and stood near enough I should be fine. We tried it -without water - and it worked fine. Didn't try  at home for three weeks due to balance and tiredness but then stood with operated leg out behind me and other knee slightly bent against the bath as I was shown and bent my head enough to rinse hair effectively. Bit messy and awkward but have washed my hair successfully. Just be careful you don't bend at a right angle (90 degrees) and you'll be fine. At least your hair'll be clean and that means so much to us gals!

      You're so right Marey. It's great knowing that others will have gone through my issues too. One question has brought me loads of other info too. I am a nurse, but my specialty was certainly not orthopaedics;  I only did 6-8 weeks of it 30+ years ago. It also helps that my sister is 14 weeks ahead of me THR wise! She's a nurse too! Probably all that heavy lifting we did over the years!
