Can anyone suggest some natural treatments for this horrible gout?

Been prescribed pills by the gp but i'm wary of taking them because of the side effects, have done though because the pain is so bad but wondered if anyone has ideas on natural treatments that actually work?

Cheers,

George

I have no comments on the natural treatments.

The drugs have no side affects on the vast majority of people.

The drugs have changed my life - for the better.

I take Allopurinol and this allows me to play football twice a week!

IMPORTANT: Allopurinol takes months before it becomes effective - so it must be persisted with.  It is not a quick fix - rather a long term game changer.

There are drugs such as Colchicine that give more immediate relief too.  Even anti-inflams are useful.

    Hi George

Ihave had gout for over 45 years, here are some of the drugs I have taken. Indocid, Rhumox, colchicine, zyloric (allopurinol) and the best one of all Arcoxia. Only one is needed to calm the most agressive attack of gout. You ask about natural remedies I take montmerency sour cherry juice, and tumeric capsules also  cut down or cut out alcohol iburofen also help and they are available over the counter.

      Hello Keith,

I've pretty much become teetotal now, which is a shame because I used to like tipple, this cherry juice sounds promising, I love cherries in general so I'd be more than happy to drink it anyway. Thanks for the advice.

    Hi George,

I feel your pain, I posted not too long ago whilst a gout attack was happening. I took cherry juice every 2 hours with celery seed (Cherry juice mixed with a pint of water every 2 hours with cellery seed) I kid you not it worked wonders and the gout attack dissapeared! Keep drinking plenty of water. I cant comment on the drugs as I also have my reservations on taking these when my doctor suggested it, however this is a choice you need to make.

Hopefully you will find something that works for you.

      Hello VSM,

You echo what Keith says above which is promising, I'm definiely going to look into this cherry juice, and why not the celery too, shouldn't cost that much.

      Thanks

Hi, I have had a few attacks so it's still somewhat new to me. It had been years since I had to deal with an attack. This last one knocked me down, both knees and feet. I read as much as I could about natural remedies and tried bromelain, an extract from pineapple and quercetin which is a supplement. Also a natural gel (arnica) is soothing and an antiinflammatory. I hope this is helpful.

See a doctor, a diatician and learn what to eat that will make you more alkaline.

Google gout diet, gout food chart, purine acid food charts and bookmark them so you can go back and refresh when needed. Natural remedies.

Cherries - tart cherry juice, drink lots of water, drink alkaline water also ( its easy to make google it ), fruits and vegetables are the biggest help, PhGreens is a mixture to add to water just 1 tsp. in a glass of water. Celery, squash, radish, apples, pears, oranges, pineapple ect. The thing is that you must consume more alkaline foods than acidic foods. I've been doing fine for just over a year with my gout diet in place. I'm not on any meds. I'm just balancing my diet. You can do it. There is a little more effort involved but nothing drastic, like eating an apple or pear instead of a bag of chips or pretzels which are also processed foods. Changing your diet will change your body. You don't have to go hungry eat all the fruit and vegetables to satisfy your hunger. Avoid organ meats, shell fish, sodas, hotdogs, burgers, sausage. Monitor your acid levels and when you are neutral or alkaline you can splurge on some of these things like meats and shrimp. But eat small amounts to avoid gout. I now eat 5 salads/week, chicken or fish even started eating salmon which I always hated, but no more I now like the salmon. I cut out all soda, chips and pretzels are just a handful per day if I have them. Cut out fats where you can drink 1% milk or skim if you can. Cut back on gravys.

Best of luck, it's not that hard to do. You will also lose weight and save $ on the gout diet.

Hi can any one help me with my gout problem. I take a lot of drugs due to heart problems including warfarin, which stops me taking the usual drugs to help with gout. Does anyone have the same problems and an answer to my problem?

    many thanks

I have had gout for 5 years now, medications worked fine in the beginning but for some unknown reason I have become immune to the meds, I was taking colchrys, piroxicam, indomethicin, alleve and 800mg of ibuprofin like candy. I read somewhere about organic non-pasturized Apple Cider Vinegar, I mixed three tablespoons into a glass of water three times a day and 48 hours later I am 90% healed. I will continue to do this (just 1 glass daily) because this mixture seems to have some very good detoxification benefits. I am also researching Pandanus Leaves for a tea mixture. I will know in a few weeks

      DaveA616,

Can I ask you a question.

Have you taken Allopurinol daily for at least a year (without a break)?

If so then what dosage per day?

      Hi Dave,

I take 2 cherry capsules daily and ensure I have at least a glass of water on the hour every hour from 9 to 7pm this not only releived the effects of my gout when it came on but I have not had a flare up for 12 months now. It does not work for everyone and maybe it is just the increased level of hydration I am getting but give it a go, you can buy the cherry capsules from H&B or online. Tell me how you get on

      OK daveA616,

I have fairly strong views on gout and diet and drugs etc.

I am 54 and have had gout for perhaps 7 or 8 years.

However, about 3 years ago it started getting much more frequent and worse.  I could not walk for days on end.

I will try to keep this short!

      1. I saw my GP and realised that doctors are not specialists..

      2. I paid €130 and saw a specialist.

      3. Specialist told me that a change of lifestyle would probably not make much difference to my gout.

      4. Anti inflamatories and colchicine will give some immediate relief but no long term fix.

      5. I take Allopurinol once daily and it has changed my life.  I have had no gout for about 2.5 years.

      6. IMPORTANT: Allopurinol is a long term fix and must be taken daily for at least a year to be fully effective. The dosage may need tweaking after a few months but it is all very simple.

      7. I play football 3 times a week and never miss a game.  (My football is pretty dreadful but that's nothing to do with the gout!)

      Do yourself a MAJOR favour.

      1. By all means improve your diet/lifestyle but don't rely on it to fix your gout.

      2. See a GP and ASK to see a specialist (not essential but recommended)

      3. Get a prescription for Allopurinol and watch it work magic - you will need to wait a few months or even a year. I took daily colchicine for the first 6 months too. Stick with the allopurinol longterm.

Just do it ! It may improve your quality of life in a big way and for the rest of your life.

The various diet options can act as a distraction and in this way can do more harm than good.

      All the best!

      Patrick

Hi George, I had gout for 20+years and have tried everything out there. Allopurinol didn't work for me because it takes too long and I had attacked even when I was taking it.

Bottom line what worked for me was Chlorella. It beats cherry juice or baking soda pills, it's natural and it serious cured me after 3 months.

You should try it, you can buy chlorella powder (by a he bulk 1kg bag for around usd80). Take 15g per day and you will see the effect in around 60 days.

Good luck and wishing you free of gout soon,

    Gary
